In this video, you will learn everything you need to know about Jolly Green Tree Collards. ‪@projecttreecollard‬ developed this new variety of perennial tree collard and released it to the public in 2020. You will get to see what it looks like planted in the garden and to hear about its growth habit and what you can expect. This video will help you understand whether a Jolly Green Tree Collard is a good plant for your garden, how much space it needs, how to plant it, and where to plant it.
Jolly Green Tree Collard is a wonderful, rare perennial tree collard. It is a naturally occurring garden hybrid from the Berkeley Project Tree Collard Farm that appears to be a cross between the Merritt Tree Collard, Green Tree Collard, and maybe even Purple Tree Collard. Jolly Green Tree Collard gets between 5 and 10 feet in height, and appears to naturally branch into a large shrub form. Within the first year or two, it forms a 1 inch diameter trunk. It is one of the faster growing tree collard varieties.
Once Jolly Green reaches 2-3 feet in height, it is best tied to a sturdy stake as it can be top heavy in storms and high winds. Leaves can get up to 2 feet long and are a bright to medium green color with lighter stems. They are smooth like annual Collards, but the leaves are much larger. Jolly Green Tree Collards aren't a big bloomer which means it is much more productive through the spring than some other tree collards.
Tree collards (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) are members of the brassica family. They are also known as Tree Kale or Tree Cabbage. Their relatives include traditional collards, kale, broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, and cauliflower. However, unlike most of its relatives, tree collards are perennial. This means that, like a fruit tree or rose bush, they will continue to grow and produce year after year and without the need for planting new seeds or seedlings every year like traditional collards and kale. Tree collards are hardy to about 20° F (-7° c) and in mild climates have been known to live for up to twenty years! They are closely related to other perennial collard varieties grown in Mediterranean, Africa, the Americas, and other countries.

Oh I’m so thankful to hear about your less than ideal soil. I’m halfway done with digging holes for my new collards but was getting discouraged from my tightly packed clay soil. Taking a break, happy to watch another of your wonderful videos and SO encouraged to keep going. Thank you for making these videos, Sequoiah.

I have 42 nicely developed Moringa Trees and about 40 new Moringa sprouts (also known as micro-greens for birds! argh!!! LOL) designed to provide us with food and shade! We also have 3 apple seed trees growing from seeds from store bought apples: 2 Pink Lady and 1 Fuji.

I purchased cuttings from you in October,2022. Potted them according to instructions but they haven’t gotten any roots yet. They were exposed to the vast amounts of N. California rain, so 1 stem just rotted & the other 2 are firm with new leaves. Is there anyway to get the roots started or is it too late or do I just leave them alone?

no particular size cage....around 12 inches across is great. Just be sure to get smaller diameter holes in your chicken wire. One inch is too large. 3/4 or 1/2 inch is better. I do have a video on my channel about making the gopher cages for tree collards

If you have hard freezes in your area by December then it may be too late unless you have a greenhouse. They need up to 8 weeks to root. The other time to do it would be around April.

In your area, growing Jolly Green Tree Collards from cuttings or rooted plants is marginal. I know you have had some big, strangely cold winters the last few years. If I were you, I would buy the Jolly Green Tree Collard seeds, and grow them in the spring when you would start other brassicas like broccoli and cauliflower. I think you already missed the correct timing to plant them in the fall

I don’t see a lot of companion planting...how do you organically keep them pest free? I just lost one of my young purple tree collards to aphids and usually those white moths land on them a lot too.
@projecttreecollard
@projecttreecollard 2 жыл бұрын
no companion planting yet as I barely got these in the ground 4 months ago in 100 degree heat. They are great interplanted with perennial herbs such as hyssop, thyme, oregano, yarrow, parsley...and annuals such as lettuce, mache, miners lettuce, cilantro, calendula, etc. Apparantly the hyssop helps deter the white cabbage moths, but I am not going to vouch for that yet.
