The wahoo element bolt has been a work horse for me, highly recommend. Map and turn by turn are the only weak points, but it gives me all the data I need, is small but not too small, and might be the most reliable bike “thing” I’ve had for the last +3 years. Watch it die on me now that I’ve made this comment.

Got the wahoo bolt v1 in 2019, handed it down to my 11 year old this year when I got the v2 bolt for free in exchange for a mate borrowing my bikebox. Tried Garmin but absolutely hated the touchscreens for the same reason as youself. Note: I loved the garmin advanced features like climbpro etc but now I just connect my fenix6 pro to the bars and use that in parallel to the wahoo. Never used the garmin mapping as I predominantly plan my routes in komoot. Wahoo syncs infinitely faster to both komoot and strava (map planning and post ride uploads) than garmin connect... and none of the very annoying "you have too many maps uploaded..." crap that garmin dealt me. Oh one more gripe, I dropped my garmin ONCE and it cracked the screen... Yes I'm clumbsy but the bolt lasted years of abuse and is still going fine.

I see no reason to switch for another computer as long as this one lasts.

@@pl4free I have yet to put mine at 100% screen brightness even in the summer. Battery life is worse than most competitors, but I don't ride for more than 8 hours in one go so I don't really care. I've been running Beta for most of the time I've had it and only had one crash where I lost a ride. In my experience, Wahoo's are rock solid while I've talked to plenty of people with Garmin and you never know when it just won't record a ride or an update completely borks your computer. On a side note, Wahoo's customer support is top notch. When my dog chewed up my original ELEMNT they actually offered to let me send it in to them and see if it could be repaired. Unfortunately it had already gone in the trash, because what company is going to offer to repair an electronic device my dog chewed up, and of course trash pickup was that same day. But that offer cemented me as a customer probably for as long as I'm riding.

My adapter snapped but with some time and tools i was able to fix the adapter manually and i added 2 pieces of metal in the zone that constantly snaps and since then 0 issues, 1 thing to take in consideation is that some carbon mount adapters (the ones used with integrated handlebars), sometimes tend to vibrate to much and that casues issues with the barometric sensor of the karoo 2, so either you go with an alloy mount or a stiff carbon one cuz if not you could end up with ridiculous elevation gain calculations

Most people don't compete, I no longer compete in races. I'm just fine with using my phone, otherwise cycling can become an endless pit to poor money in, rather spend it on other things. I can attach my phone to the steer but often have him just in my back pocket (in plastic), just do the occasional check if I'm within set limits, works perfect for endurance training but even for interval and tempo I like to train on feeling, then check back home if I did right or need adjustment. I used to be too focused on data, trying to enjoy the ride more without.

There is another angle to this. If the only thing you're interested in is the device on your handlebars, then stop here. Otherwise, the back end integration is important. Data consolidation between different data sources, integration with training platforms, ability to load in 3rd party applications onto the unit, etc. In my experience (I haven't used all devices), the head end units all have the basics covered really well. It usually boils down to personal preference on the aesthetics and perhaps the screen navigation/configuration/layout. However, if you can't get the workouts you want/need from your training platform onto your head end unit without jumping through hoops then that is a real pain. I'll take a little less ideal screen layout than what I would really like in order to get the back-end integration and data consolidation that makes life significantly simpler. The bottom line is that I don't look at my head end unit all that much compared to the time I spend evaluating data and planning my next workout.

X2. Until you decide to train with a power meter, there’s no big advantage to the modern bike computers vs using an app on your phone.. with one exception: they do allow you to get speed/cadence without the wires. And having all that data in the same app with your gps data becomes really attractive if you’re actually training. Also, bike computers are improving at a continuing steady rate.. so wait til you actually want to track all the data before taking the plunge. All that said, monitoring cadence and heart rate can be extremely valuable for new and returning riders.

The Trimmone lite is sold as a unit and with an option for the cadence sensor additionally. Cadence sensor says it doubles as a speed sensor if you rotate the battery cover? I assume that's for (bad) speed/cadence indoor computer training setups and it logs your outdoor speed via GPS and cadence via the additional sensor?

Ive been using my garmin 530 edge for bout 3 years now but recently at a rainy ride, water went under the edge of the display. It still works but im worried that if i have a rainy race this season it will give up on me.

Great comparison, on the trimm is there always that much black negative space on the top? Does anything show there during riding?

The little Edge from Garmin is a fantastic bike computer, especially for the price! It does just about everything, only the on screen map is the weak point. As I’m aging and my eyesight is getting worse I’m in need of a bigger screen and as I’ve run mine for about 3 years now and sadly the battery life is diminishing so I’m looking for a replacement. The 540 seems to the way to go.

I had lots of bad experiences with Garmin, which made me switch to Wahoo. I've used a Bolt since it's release (monochrome) and I upgrades last year to the new Bolt. It's never failed and the screen is so easy to read. I use a Roam on my gravel bike, it's got a longer battery life and the larger screen is great for the maps.

Here's an advantage of the Karoo2 that I use over the two Garmin 520s and a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt - its still working. Much happier with it than the others.

14 years into cycling and I'm still on the Garmin 510. Might be time for an upgrade I think!!! :D
@eria306910 ай бұрын
I’m sorry but I’m not buying the part where the Karoo is too heavy that the quarter turn clips broke. We have two of those units that are over 3 years old, countless rough descents on gravel & MTB with no issues. Purely subjective opinions in this “review”. The Karoo is navigation first, and I think they mention that in their marketing. Perhaps you could have used the lanyard that came with it. Anyway, interesting video, cheers!

Tether?!! How analog! The Garmin mounts were designed for watches and esp on bouncy stuff any mount for anything will be challenged.

Garmin all the way Edge series, syncs with your Fenix Watch and gives load / training structure - 130.. went to 530 to get the sync up feature so everything works together... and would only consider an upgrade once 540 / 840 falls in price.. i like that it auto detects climbs without having a GPX loaded in.. however wouldnt want to spend hundreds for that simple upgrade. 530 has been amazing.. best bang for buck IMHO.
@NorCalCycling10 ай бұрын
That auto climb thing is pretty cool especially in new areas. That’s the one thing the Karoo does best

I have a 530 too but it does not auto detect climbs without having a gpx loaded ! Do you know how to enable it ?
@BikesKomsCRO10 ай бұрын
@@Rob-qe9dd 530 does not offer this. 540 and 840 and 1040 I think. But not worth the upgrade ONLY for that. Also SOLAR is a gimmick selling feature especially in the UK.

I went with the Bryton 420. Has everything I need and a lot more data than I'll ever use. It integrates with my Garmin radar, Garmin hr monitor, power pedals... It does not have a mapping feature, but I pretty much know where I'm going. If I get lost, I have my phone. I paid a little more, but now it's under $100, which was important given the price of Garmin head units. I didn't need color screen or map, but you can get that with an upper level model. Some odd button locations, but you get used to it after a few rides. Just my $0.02. Thanks for the review.

Good thing you have good spatial IQ. So many of my riding buddies don't. Which seems to coincide with a low technical IQ. Weirdly they all insist on the "best" Garmin money can buy, but only use speed, ride time, and maybe cadence. Not an issue on road rides with good cell coverage but on our gravel rides without cell coverage, riders getting lost, missing turns is frustrating because they don't download the gpx files beforehand...and not knowing how to use gps in general 😅

Edge 840 (non solar) hits the sweet spot size-wise for me, 1040 is just too big. Riding solo a lot, so Varia RTL is really helpful for me. With MyBikeRadar Traffic data field (free but works only on Garmin) speed of approaching traffic is displayed and recorded.

My last Garmin flew off when I was pushing buttons on it three years ago on a fast group ride, never found it since then I have switched to Leyzne. They’re just pretty much basic LCD style computers. They’re not progressive like the other brands but I like the locking mechanism they don’t fall off. I have one computer and I got a program for gravel mountain bike in my road bike. And the battery last for days that’s because it’s LCD. It’s very dated and it’s design. And yes I know that. I’m not even sure if the company is really caring about progressing with their computers these days, but I’m gonna keep using it for now.

I find 20 second power is also good for group rides. When your out front on a pull you can see your overall average power for that pull. I guess you can use the lap button for that too. But I have it on my main workout page under 3 second power

My main complaint about the Wahoo computers is the inability to set auto-lap based on location. If you want lap data in a crit it's important to have laps be calculated based on the start/finish line because lap distance can vary for a multitude of reasons (varying lines, crashes, free laps, etc.). I love just about everything else about my Roam v2 (and previous v1), but this might actually make me switch next time.

Had a trimm one lite before, but sadly the waterproofing didn't worked for me. Had it less than 6mths, water got it, send back, got it back, soon after a month or 2 it happened again and I give up on it. Otherwise, it has enough features for most folks. Hope they had improve since then.
