Everytime I fertilized my corn this year it has poured a flood and washed it away. I've fertilized it 6 times if not more and it's still stunted. It won't stop raining here on the coast of NC. Hoping I can get another crop in. I've had to dig potatoes early and throw tomato plants in the woods. We are finally getting a break now. Great video guys, always learn something knew.

Revisiting planting early sweet corn varieties with classic Greg and Travis start @ 26:00 for a laugh. Then, start at the beginning. Yellowstone and Glacial White did fantastic planted side by side for us in S.E. Louisiana last spring 2022. No cross pollination. For ideal germination, be extra patient and wait for ideal soil temperature like they suggest. These two varieties are holding there honey sweetness after pressure canning nine months later.

I'm planning on doing a planting of silver queen followed by a planting of avalon a few weeks apart - hoping to give my inlaws a side by side comparison (they're stuck on silver queen). @Wesley Callison Yep, we hear that a lot. Often times it's because they've never really experimented with some of the newer, sweeter varieties. But some folks don't like their corn to be very sweet, and that's the reason why they love Silver Queen.

Good, clear, concise, guidance on corn this week. I know that will be helpful to us all. I'm glad you touched a little on "cross pollination" and that might be a good thing to cover in a future show. It won't take much time to explain it, but I find that it's one thing that confuses gardeners the most. I'm so glad that you include both the Latin genus name and species name of every seed type on the website (maybe include on seed pkts also??).

@@gardeningwithhoss Just a thought. I try to order with the genus/species in mind, if I am planning on planting together with the possibility of saving seed. If I have multiple seed packets of same genus (brassicas and cucurbits come to mind), I'll just write it on the pack to keep me straight. If you explain cross pollination by genus/species on the show, you'll get to use more cards for sure! :) Greg will like that!

I sure do enjoy this podcast, it really is best gardening show I know of to layout things in regular folk terminology. You know I was thinking about the people who ask about cross pollination and wonder if they are worried because they want to save their seeds because if not then it really don't matter due to cross pollination only occurs in the next generation which would be if they were savings seed to plant the next year otherwise it don't matter for the crop that is actually growing. If a home gardener is buying seeds each year and not saving the seeds for next crop then why worry about cross pollination?

I love hoss tools. Your transforming my gardening experience and knowledge. Please forgive my ignorance. I am transitioning to traditional gardening from square foot gardening. When you say row spacing are you talking about the distance of the row or the distance between rows. Like you were talking about the row spacing on the corn should be 30 to 36 inches. Thank you from snowy San Antonio, TX!

Thank you. I watched one of your corn planting videos today and realized that. My experience with gardening has been only square foot. It seems like such a waste of space to plant in a single row with 30-36” in between. It is hard to plan my garden that way. However I applying all of your techniques this year and using your seeds and equipment. We will see what comes of it. Thanks again!

Hey guys love your shows. So, I'm wondering if after you've fertilized your raised bed garden it rains for dayssssssss (S.C. zone 8b) does all that rain wash out all that fertilizer? Can /should I refertilize?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
It certainly can. Depends on how much "runoff" you have.

When you talk about a pound of fertilizer, is that is a weighed out pound or 16 ounces of dry fertilizer measured in a measuring cup? I would think weighed out or you would have gave the measurement in cups rather than pounds.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
That would be a weighed pound on the 20-20-20 and Chilean Nitrate -- the dry stuff. For the liquid MicroBoost, it would be a liquid cup measurement.

Enjoyed your shows! Appreciate your advice! Can i plant different varieties of to.atoes beside ea h other, or gonna cross polinate? What about different varieties of okras growing beside each other? Is it gonna mix ?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
No problem with either of those. Both are self-pollinating, so no real issues.
@MartieMc
@MartieMc 3 жыл бұрын
Bees can cross pollinate both. In tomatoes it's only about 5% of the time. Not sure about okra. But it can happen. No problem unless of course you're saving/trading/selling seed. It also depends on your bee population. I have 2 varieties of okra I want to save seed from. I'm gonna plant one in April, save seeds, and remove it before I plant the other and it starts making later in the year. Because I don't have alot of seeds of either.

@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
Spinosad is an insecticide, so it's not going to do anything for the smut. But you can mix Liquid Copper (hosstools.com/product/liquid-copper-fungicide/) with the spinosad and that will take care of the smut.

Curious about drip tape. I just placed an order with you guys and I plan to use my well water but I also have a pond I would like to utilize. I saw your irrigation videos and it's not recommended to use pond water with drip cause of the muck/silt. Any suggestions on pumps and filters to possibly try with drip? Such great fertile water I wish I could use. Or would you try using it in overhead watering?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
You can use the pond water as long as you install a swimming pool type sand filter upstream of the drip system.

@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it works great as well. But because it's not water-soluble, it's not quite as fast. It's more of a slow-release fertilizer as most granular fertilizers are. You'd also need use twice as much 10-10-10 as 20-20-20.

you can grow without drip tape, just a lot of overhead watering required. All corn needs additional fertilizer.

@gardeningwithhoss

You can grow them beside one another as long as you stagger the plantings. Plant the sweet corn first, then plant the field corn about 2 weeks later and you'll be fine.

What is the name of a variety of corn that the old timers call “Horse Corn” or “Field Corn?”
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 2 жыл бұрын
Grain corn used for animal feed is more often white and sometimes called horse-corn. Dent corn, also referred to as field corn, is common in livestock feeds Field corn is the classic big ears of yellow dented corn you see dried and harvested in the fall. In fact, it’s sometime called “dent corn” because of the distinctive dent that forms on the kernel as the corn dries. Field corn has dozens of uses, but it is most commonly fed to animals or used to make renewable fuels like ethanol to power our cars and trucks. hosstools.com/product-category/premium-garden-seeds/corn-field/
