Revisiting planting early sweet corn varieties with classic Greg and Travis start @ 26:00 for a laugh. Then, start at the beginning. Yellowstone and Glacial White did fantastic planted side by side for us in S.E. Louisiana last spring 2022. No cross pollination. For ideal germination, be extra patient and wait for ideal soil temperature like they suggest. These two varieties are holding there honey sweetness after pressure canning nine months later.

Good, clear, concise, guidance on corn this week. I know that will be helpful to us all. I'm glad you touched a little on "cross pollination" and that might be a good thing to cover in a future show. It won't take much time to explain it, but I find that it's one thing that confuses gardeners the most. I'm so glad that you include both the Latin genus name and species name of every seed type on the website (maybe include on seed pkts also??).

Not a bad idea to put that info on the packets, although that we'd have to slowly transition into it considering the amount of printed packets we have in house.
@tommathews39643 жыл бұрын
@@gardeningwithhoss Just a thought. I try to order with the genus/species in mind, if I am planning on planting together with the possibility of saving seed. If I have multiple seed packets of same genus (brassicas and cucurbits come to mind), I'll just write it on the pack to keep me straight. If you explain cross pollination by genus/species on the show, you'll get to use more cards for sure! :) Greg will like that!

I sure do enjoy this podcast, it really is best gardening show I know of to layout things in regular folk terminology. You know I was thinking about the people who ask about cross pollination and wonder if they are worried because they want to save their seeds because if not then it really don't matter due to cross pollination only occurs in the next generation which would be if they were savings seed to plant the next year otherwise it don't matter for the crop that is actually growing. If a home gardener is buying seeds each year and not saving the seeds for next crop then why worry about cross pollination?

"row spacing" refers to the distance between rows.

Hello you all talks alot about 20-20-20, but not alot about 10-10-10. Can I use it in the soil and in containers? Does it do the same job?
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it works great as well. But because it's not water-soluble, it's not quite as fast. It's more of a slow-release fertilizer as most granular fertilizers are. You'd also need use twice as much 10-10-10 as 20-20-20.

Is there any sweet corn you can grow without having to side dress much or do the drip tape
@gardeningwithhoss2 жыл бұрын
you can grow without drip tape, just a lot of overhead watering required. All corn needs additional fertilizer.

Did I hear you say that you coukdnt grow sweet corn by field corn. I beleive we are rotating field corn in the back field and the garden is in the back as well. Will this cause issues??
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
You can grow them beside one another as long as you stagger the plantings. Plant the sweet corn first, then plant the field corn about 2 weeks later and you'll be fine.

When do you expect Christmas Limas and Scarlet Runners to be back in stock and avaialable??
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Scarlet Runners had a crop failure and are not available for 2021. We just received a new shipment of Christmas Lima Beans and should have those packed and on the site within the next week.

You two crack me up. I’m going to plant corn yet again and pray I actually have some to eat for the first time. Greg I’m sure Mrs. Hoss really enjoyed your Valentine’s Day poem!

any ideas on urea? I've seen it, but not much information on it... and it's pretty high nitrogen, maybe 42.
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Lots of corn growers use it. Just be careful with it because 42% nitrogen is pretty hot.

What is the name of a variety of corn that the old timers call “Horse Corn” or “Field Corn?”
@gardeningwithhoss2 жыл бұрын
Grain corn used for animal feed is more often white and sometimes called horse-corn. Dent corn, also referred to as field corn, is common in livestock feeds Field corn is the classic big ears of yellow dented corn you see dried and harvested in the fall. In fact, it’s sometime called “dent corn” because of the distinctive dent that forms on the kernel as the corn dries. Field corn has dozens of uses, but it is most commonly fed to animals or used to make renewable fuels like ethanol to power our cars and trucks. hosstools.com/product-category/premium-garden-seeds/corn-field/
