Great video! My wife and I vacationed on St. Thomas this last July. The trip had been planned for almost a year and it was our first time to the Caribbean so despite the pandemic we took the trip. My wife really fell in love with the island to the point that we started floating the idea of someday moving there.

I've been on island here in St. Thomas for a month short of 2 years, and I will be moving back stateside to get married. You make some excellent points, and I think you hit the cost of living pretty well here (altho I think you might hit it a bit harder), and how difficult/impossible it is to find the things we take for granted stateside, like good pizza and Target/Walmart etcetc. The electric rates here are in the top 2 of rates on the entire planet -- in the .47/kwh neighborhood, and it's not getting any better. Plus you have to buy water for your cistern if you're not relying on rain water. And yeah, that's the other annoying thing: MOLD. Everything here either molds or rusts, and sometimes it molds *and* rusts. You're really accurate about the driving conditions. You need a skinny vehicle with some good road clearance here. That's why Jeeps, Toyota Rav4s and those older stubby little Subaru SUVs are so popular here. Put it this way: A 1990s or early 2000s Honda Accord would be way too big for the roads here. So are cars with a lot of horsepower, because you'll rarely ever get any faster than 30-40mph here unless it's like 11pm -- and even there, common rules of the road and traffic laws are pretty much just a suggestion. Put simply, this island doesn't know what a straight-line road is, and the hairpin switchbacks can sneak up on you if your new here. I'm glad you've brought up "island car." Because if you bring your nice car here, it will soon turn into an island car especially given the piss-poor state of the roads here and the basic inability of the locals to navigate their way in and out of a parking lot spot. Potholes R Us, so your best course of action is to sell your car before you leave stateside, or have someone sell it for you on consignment. And as you point out, this isn't a flat island except what's fronting the harbors, so you're talking about going up and down the mountain, which is a good 1500 foot elevation -- people here get their front brakes and rotors changed as often as their change their oil and their underwear. But overall -- and the must of all musts -- the ONE thing to bring (if you can afford the rent, which is just NUTS here, or even find an apartment that isn't a slum because a lot of the building owners have converted their units to Airbnbs because, well, tourists) is a partner, because if you come alone (like I did), count on living a very lonsome existence. As you accurately point out, friends are incredibly tough to make, and twice as tough to make with the locals. And yeah, COVID isn't helping in that respect, either. Maybe my outlook would differ somewhat if COVID never existed, but coming here solo is exceptionally rough. So in sum, my estimation of living on St. Thomas the past few weeks short of 2 years is this: Thos place is indeed the paradise they say it is -- if you're able to go back home after 3 days. Living here, different story.

Ha, that is quite a summation. And pretty accurate. It's not for everyone. You definitely need to be able to afford to live here. But, I've found now that I'm settled in, we really like it here. Thanks for the comment.

I agree. Jamaica and Cayman are no different as far as rent and loneliness go. Although Cayman doesn’t have any mountains and it’s easier to find Canadian and American stuff - but don’t expect Walmart or Target. Many Caymanians fly to Florida every 4-6 months for major shopping.

This video is 100% accurate! Thank you so much for doing this. I've have looked for something like this and you're right about people being rude when you ask questions about this stuff. We are almost done with exactly everything your just went over. We leave Missouri on Oct 22 and should be in St Croix by Oct 29! We bought a home in St Croix at the end of 2018 and have been trying to get there since. It takes SO long to get everything done plus with Covid, everything stopped. We are shipping 50 years of our lives in a 40' container and selling everything else - SO HARD! We are paying $18,150 to get the container shipped, which will take about 6 weeks to get there (if there are no hurricanes). We are taking one truck with us which will cost us $6570 after we drive it from Missouri to Miami and get it loaded up. We are using Omega Relocations for everything and Alisa is the BEST! We did exactly what you said about shopping around on the island. Every time we visit, we've tried to research what will be available and what we need to bring or purchase online and have shipped to us. On St Croix, we have 2 K-Marts and 1 Home Depot plus all the mom & pop shops where prices were ridiculous. It took my husband days to find Dr. Pepper which we finally found at a gas station for a buck can. I found a 2-liter bottle of root beer for $6 and brownie mix for $4.85. Groceries ARE high. WAPA - don't even get me started!!!! We argued with them for over a year with our lawyer down there to get our house licensed as residential. WAPA insisted since the owners prior to us did not get proper licenses when they remodeled that we had to pay a commercial rate. Since you are in real estate, please for the sake of your customers, check into this for them prior to selling a home. Again, this took us a year to get cleared up. WAPA kept billing us $70 a month even though we aren't down there and our electric was turned off. Since WAPA is owned by the government, they pretty much do what they want and you have no way to argue with them. We still have a dusk to dawn light in front of our home that no one will fix. It's been out since Maria and WAPA has a report out for us but they say they don't have lights to put up. Island life! Driving is the same on St Croix. If you don't have 4-wheel, don't drive. The pot holes are scary big and the curves are so sharp that I'm afraid to go anywhere. People drive like maniacs. They are either going 20 miles an hour or 70 miles an hour on the same road. I refuse to drive at night. Again, thank you for your video! I will make sure to get our electronics updated in the next month.

You'll get used to driving. The places you have to as a normal person are pretty easy. For me as a Realtor, I am always to really hard to get to places. I still get a little unnerved.

How interesting! We purchased and closed on our home in STX this past Sept. And we are also from Missouri, and our home is purchased from a couple from Missouri coincidentally. But just due to departing from employment, packing, COVID, etc. we will not be arriving until Nov. 26 - that is the plan. We also are from Missouri. We've visited the island several times, and the last time, we treated our visit as a homecation - checking out WAPA, stores, hospitals etc. This is an expensive move! We debated a long time and even had a truck reserved to drive our things to Miami, but ultimately we have gone with a cargo drop. I appreciate in the video the reminder that it does become dark at 6:00. Hopefully you have arrived now - likely busy unpacking. I'm curious if there is anything at this point you think you'd have done differently in your move?

Have lived on STX for 20 years. Prices and WAPA are high, but OF COURSE they would be since it's a tiny remote island. That's true of any such island worldwide, not just STX. Also, you do NOT need 4-wheel drive, and driving at night is fine. People do NOT drive like maniacs any more than anywhere else in the US. I think you're just on the sensitive side. The roads ARE horrible though, I'll give you that.

This was a fabulous video and thanks for making it. Back in the 70's I got to San Juan Island on a cruise ship and it was a magical experience and I always wanted to go back for a visit. But it truly was just a fantasy. But I found your video extremely interesting on what it would cost to move and about "island life". You brought up all the things someone like me would overlook and I found that amazing. I was really surprised on what you're paying in monthly expenses to live there. That stunned me. Thank you for your very accurate information. I recommend that people see this video if they’re thinking about moving to any island. Before moving there, remind people to make sure the job there is sustainable. Lockdown that decent paying job first. St. Thomas is known for tourism. St. John is known for nature. St. Croix is a combination of both and it’s larger and flatter. Reminder: If you’re moving to a foreign island, remember to check on a work visa. 😊

You provide some great information, but anyone considering a move to the Caribbean from the US should understand that St. Thomas is a US Territory. If you're considering a move to the ABCs, St. Kitts, Grenada, or another Caribbean island country that's not a US Territory, it's much more complicated and MUCH more expensive. Most of them will require Citizenship by Investment to live there full time, and that can cost Tens or even Hundreds of Thousands of dollars to make happen.

Thank You! A lot of it depends on which island you want to be on. Also, we wanted to be on the beach so our housing expenses could be less. But, I didn't want to move to an island and be farther away from the beach than when I lived in Florida. It's like everything else in life... Trade-offs and compromises.

My friends stuffed their cars before shopping. They covered the windows. Use paradise freight, get your stuff to Miami on Thursday and the boat arrives Tuesday. You can Amazon ship it to Paradise freight and they load it up.

It's the same as it would be in the mainland. I still have my FL license so I just had to take the VI test and pay them money. And then it's just like starting out as a new agent with now clients and no contacts. But, I'm optimistic.

I have my licence also. Im from PA. Im going to move back to St. Croix once I get my first couple of rental properties on the mainland. It's so expensive to live and as an agent, as we know, you only make money via sales! So think about how you're going to live in between sales. I think it's worth the hassle but if you haven't been to the island, visit 1st! Try to stay for a month to get a feel for everything. WAPA! Be ready for the bull$h¡T. Okay! Hurricanes. Crime is a thing too. Still the positives outweigh the negatives. Do your research. Visit 1st. Make some contacts. Buy don't rent.

@@How2Beach I am curious about why you chose St. Thomas? The cost of living does seem very high. If nothing is grown locally, groceries are indeed going to be a fortune. I kept thinking: I would plant strawberries (etc.) immediately. lol

There wasn't any other thought put into where we were going to move. We had never been here and knew nothing about this island. But we love it here.

Sounds like you need to see about opening a grocery store and use shipping containers to get the stuff to you. One truck load of produce sounds like it would be a great investment. 9$ for a thing of peanut butter. A shipping container can hold probably ten thousand of them. 2$ a pail of peanut butter equals 7 dollars profit. Or 70,000 profit. Cucumber, tomatoes, oranges etc... As much as we are looking to get someplace away from the current political climate in the states perhaps we would be in for more than we were willing to bargain for. Good luck, there’s a waiting list of about 2 years and locals get first priority. If your on Section 8 you’d never be able to make it there. Take your average monthly expenses and double and triple some things.

My wife and I are moving from Florida to St. Croix next Spring and the info on shipping our car and that of pallets was very helpful as we were planning on shipping our personal effects on the plane and paying the extra charge for each bag. This let's us know of a cheaper way. The cost of living info was also good, we spent one week on the island last summer and could say that most of the blogs I read indicate a 30% above mainland cost is quite accurate (except power of course!).

Do you mean what are the people called? People from the Virgin Islands are called Virgin Islanders and based on the island of residence are called St. Thomian, St. Johnian, Crucian and Water Islanders respectively.

Some great tips and reminders shared! A specific example of the daylight hours. Although STX isn't on daylight savings times, it always then gets dark at about 6 pm. Listening to the video, I'm amazed that you packed only a 4x4 pallet. I see the value in that, but we are in process of moving if not permanently, at least 5-10 years. I have two questions, 1) how did you find the 3rd party shipping brokers? and 2) where are the documents at you mentioned? I do not see them listed here. We are in process of packing and prepping to ship our household to STX. I know we are taking more than we need to, even more than want to LOL We definitely need a cargo container. Good point on daylight ending at 6 pm, and vehicles. We've visited several times before purchasing our house -- driving and parking two different vehicles and congratulations to you on deciding on your vehicle. We had one, unfortunately now between our two vehicles - we are taking the truck (road) but the car would be easier to park.

My wife just started making phone calls to shipping companies and I'm not really sure how she ended up on the one she choose. I know it wans't just price because some had bad reviews about things like cars that were dropped from forklifts. You will find that you don't need as much stuff as you did on the mainland. That's the other funny thing you bring up: the crazy thing about prices. Good, healthy foods cost a serious arm amd a leg, but the things that will put you in an early grave are dirt cheap. A pack of Marloboros is 9nly $5 and liquor (and stay away from the Cruzan rum. It smells and tastes like the cheap household cleaner that's popular here) is actually cheaper than on the mainland -- which isn't going to helo when you discover hospital care here is basically thord world stuff. And God Help You if you have a serious stroke or get into a hideous car wreck -- which is why one of the first things to buy here if kedical flight insurance, because an uninsured medflight alone will set you back a good $25,000.

The cars are ship from Rivera beach Florida through Tropical shipping. I think the local farmers at the western end of st thomas would think differently when you say that nothing is grown there. Additionally, i have always gotten fresh produce from fruit bowl or cost u less.

I search for Facebook groups and look at Indeed for jobs. There is FB group called St Thomas/St. John jobs that I know of, there may be more. I'd stay as long as you can. It probably won't take too long to find a place to stay. I'm a Realtor and I can help you find a place too.

It depends on if you are planing to hike in to see the beaches, if you have your own car, or if you are planning on taking taxi's. The easiest beaches to see that are beautiful are Magens, Lindquist, and Sapphire on STT and Honeymoon on STJ.

I lived, off and on, on St. Croix for 23 years. Just move back to states 2 years ago. There’s a familiar saying there. How to leave St. Croix will a million dollars? Bring 2 million. It’s expensive. Especially during high power bills at 53 cents pkh and after hurricanes feeding your generator. Oh, and feeding your generator when power is out frequently. Shopping online at Dillards and Macy’s is easy. Don’t bring everything, you’ll be broke when you leave, unless you are rich, and must leave it there. And, you will leave one day. Many reasons, ill and aging parents, grandchildren, job, whatever, you will will eventually leave. Few have stayed for more that several years. Editing to add that St. Croix is an Agricultural island and has plenty of fresh farmers markets!

@@How2Beach It had its ups and downs, especially through several major hurricanes. Overall, I wouldn’t have left when I did, but, my husband passed away and I was just too far away from my family in the states. Also, most of my dearest friends had left and many had passed away. When I met a new best friend in ‘11, I told her we’d be saying goodbye one day. She said, no, why? I said, something, like illness, children having grands, money, or lack of and hurricanes will eventually get you leaving. She and her husband left STX in November ‘17 right after Irmaria! And her daughter was expecting her first grandchild. Many come thinking they’ll have healthcare and leave when they find they can’t get any. I’ve known a few, ship everything there and buy a home and are gone in 3 months. Paradise is not a vacation unless you don’t have to work. Most bartenders I know have college degrees and real estate agents are a dime a dozen. My husband and I were not financially dependent on making our money on island. Most can’t say that and must work. Good jobs are few and far between for new residents. I’ve seen more come and go in 23 years than I’ve ever seen come and stay that long. Many come thinking they can start a new business right away and reality sets in when after 6 months they still have not been able to acquire a business license. It’s not for everyone and it’s very expensive.

A couple of questions. What is the cost for the rest of the utilities like garbage collection? I hear most water is from cisterns (rain water). Do most homes have septic tanks then? So you posted the cost for the cars when you first got there but what about annual cost like renewals? Do you need any license to do work as a contractor?

There is no garbage collection. Most houses are on Cisterns. Car renewals and things depend on the car you have. And yes, you'd need a license to work as a contractor.

Wow, You make it sound so depressing to move to St. Thomas. Every other channel makes each Island sound and look so nice. I guess I thought the Islands were like the Magic Kingdom in Florida, kinda naive huh? I am 65 with health issues I stay inside all the time, but my Doctor says I need sun more vitamin D. I guess If I lived on the beach on 1 of the Caribbean Islands I would get my tan back, but here in Georgia my 2 decks off the back of the house are all shade, so I don't go out. My wife will retire in 1 year and I have a 36 year old son I need to drag along with us. I and my son are on SS Disability, my wife will be on regular SS, so Looking for that special Island to semi retire on will be a challenge I suppose ? We have lived near Atlanta for almost 40 years and we alway's loved going to Panama City Beach Florida. But I hear from reading and listening to all these you tube video's you can find a nice Island to live on for about half what you would spend in the USA, Georgia=Florida? Our Family loves the white sand beaches and CLEAN ONES, also little places to shop for my wife. My son has a Big scooter so he could get around pretty easy, and we have a Camry. I really would be much appreciated if you could direct me to the cheapest but nice Islands to live on in the Caribbean. I had a Idea about putting a add online about another Family moving to same Island with me and we possible build a duplex together, and cut our costs? I would own it and rent out the other half to make extra money ! Also too you would need to know how much money we have to work with. Hey Kevin, St. Thomas is probably not the island for you. I moved here from Panama City Beach. It is a lot more expensive here than it is in FL. I'm sure there are cheaper islands. I have a house in Puerto Rico and real estate is cheaper there but cost of living is pretty much the same as PCB. You might want to look at Ecuador or some of the islands in Asia.

I would guess that most of it is pretty accurate. The size of the island would make a difference. And this island is a US territory, so that would impact the ease of some of the process. I'd say to look for Facebook groups of the island you are considering and find some advice there.

you can order Amazon but you don't get free shipping. You can pay for insurance to heli you to the mainland if you need emergency medical work.

The island is safe. Like anywhere, there are some places you don't want to go. But, overall its safe. I think for 3 months you would have fun. You will want a car so you'd want to figure out the logistics before you get here.
