Recent update. I was just approved for D7 visa, using the NYC VFS office. You do NOT need to get a live appointment at the VFS office (it can be a mess and appointments are sometimes over a month away); instead, choose the "mail in application" tab/option on the Apply for Visa page. From the time I sent them my packet to my receiving the visa was 5 weeks. i used Fedex to ensure my Passport got back and forth securely. I have pension, rental, and some contractor income. I did NOT have an open Portuguese bank account (perhaps they did not care because I had good passive income). For residence proof, I got a 1 year lease in Lisbon on Flatio, starting on my arrival date. Flatio lets you cancel your lease with one month notice and takes credit card payment (no bank account needed). I will get a permanent place after I arrive. Hopes this helps

How far out did you set out your rental start? Did you have to pay for all 12 months of rent due, even though you canceled? How were you able to bypass the bank account in Portugal info? We are a family of four from US wishing to vacation in Portugal first, in order to choose place of residence, schools etc.... As head of household id like to get a D7 visa; the thought of having to travel back to the states in order to apply for it seems daunting. If so, must my wife and children come with me and/or can they stay in Portugal?

@@valeriehogan-cosmas8215 I used the company Flatio, which issues a 1 year lease but allows you to pay one month at a time, with a service fee that covers the entire year lease. The issue you a official appearing one year lease, which was accepted by the Portuguese Embassy. You can cancel it with one month notice ….there was a $1200 service fee for the entire span of the lease but this worked ok for me since I didn’t have to go back to Portugal and was able to obtain the lease and put it on my credit card without a Portuguese bank account. Monthly rent were similar to Airbnb in Lisbon but with the advantage of the one-year lease usable for the visa

I watched this hoping it was going to be "Everything I needed to know about Portugal's D7 Visa" There are two or three spots in the video where either the guests or the host refer back to a rule or process that I'm guessing they assume everyone is familiar with. Unfortunately since I am not familiar with these references I felt completely lost. You can do it remotely without visiting Portugal

You can get to the embassy or consulate and they will get things done, regarding the NIF. Mind you that you will need a portuguese adress. Bank account you can get it online. There are so many Banks to choose from but i can advise Caixa Geral de Depósitos. Its the state bank, big and secure. About acomodation, try rent for a year, at least. Or buy a house!

Yes, you can choose to do a visit to get your NIF, Bank Account and Lease, then go back to the US and apply. Or you can have the law firms do it for a fee so it’s remote.

So you can't get a lease agreement without an NIF, but you can't get the NIF without an address. She says "hire us to help you!" but is that really the only option? Is there no way to get this visa without hiring professional help?

I’m about to start the process and you can do it all yourself but you will need to travel into Portugal. Watch these videos and make notes of the process and then it’s a step by step approach. I’m going to get a quote from these guys to help as I don’t want to fly to Portugal to open a bank account and get the NIF so I’ll pay for that time saver.

Yes, there is. If you know someone in Portugal who is a resident and has a NIF number, you can appoint them as your legal representative and they can apply for your NIF and open a Bank account for you, using their address which must be the same as their NIF. A friend may do that for free and a portuguese accountant or solicitor will charge as little as 50 Euros for that. From there, you can do everything else yourself. If you can fullfill all the requirements of the D7 visa, and don't have any special needs, go ahead. I'd suggest you provide as much evidence as possible with your application, for instance, when it comes to income, show more than asked including tax bills & bank statements for previous 2 or 3 years, contracts, any other sources of income, confirmation of current contracts etc. In your personal statement tell them how you are interested in the Portuguese culture and that you are learning the language (if you are not, you should be). That'll clinch it. Portugal wants young people to move & settle in permanently.

@mycode Portugal wants to attract young people to live permanently in Portugal and contribute to our society because the portuguese population is decreasing in numbers, more deaths than births. So, young families with children are very welcome. The main requirement for D7 newcomers is that they can support themselves with income they bring into the country from outside the country, such as savings, pensions, earnings, any form of income as long as they can show proof of it (legal income, of course!). Individuals need to show proof of income equivalent to the portuguese minimum wage (currently 800 Euros per month), plus 50% of that amount for a spouse, and 30% for each child. The D7 visa is issued initially for a period of 1 year, and will have to be renewed after that for periods of 2 years, up to a maximum of 5 years. After 5 years you can ask for permanent residency or portuguese citizenship. At the time of each renovation you'll be asked for proof of income or any means you are supporting yourselves, and if the Imigration Department SEF is not happy with your situation they may not renew the D7 visa any further. But as soon as you have a D7 visa, and are resident, you can also work in Portugal, I believe.

Life is so slow paced & people are very lazy, you will have to wait long for basic things to be done, bureaucracy adds salt to injury! 2. Most of the houses do not want to rent and they are in miserable conditions, house owners just want to sell it at unreasonable price, better invest in a index fund that would give better result! 3. What happens if you lease a place and D7 denied?.

You'd loose out any rent and deposit paid and you may also have to pay for the remaining period of that lease depending on the terms of the lease. Some leases have a clause that allows you to terminate the lease, by giving a notice some time before the lease expires, such as, after 90 days you may give notice that you wish to terminate the lease in 30 days counting from the date of your notice. That would mean you'd have to pay for a minimum of 90 + 30 = 120 days rent. Most landlords require the payment of at least 90 days on signing the rental contract anyway.

Finding rentals in Portugal is extremely difficult, with dogs or without, as there are not enough properties for rent and too many people searching. You may have more luck in finding a rental if you search in small villages in the interior of Portugal, as far from the coast as possible. You can look up AirB&Bs and other holiday rental portals in small towns & villages and contact the owners asking if they'd be interested in a long term rental starting end of summer season, say October or November, as they'll have no bookings during winter and some may be interested. But please note these are very isolated places and you'd need a car if you want to move around. You need an address to get a NIF and open a bank account in Portugal, both required for your D7 visa application. If you are not in Portugal and don't intend to visit to sort that out in person, you'll need to appoint someone as your fiscal reperesentative (anyone) who is resident in Portugal and has a NIF and an address. Your fiscal representative will then get a NIF and open your bank account on your behalf. If you know anyone in Portugal you can ask them if they'd do that for you, otherwise you can pay a portuguese accountant or solicitor to do that for you for around 50 Euros. Or you can use the services of Ei, or Savvy Cat Realty, or any other service, but please be aware there are also money sharks operating... it's becoming an industry. And make sure you understand the implications of giving someone power of attorney (all in portuguese, of course) to open a bank account for you, as you'd have to transfer money to that account, I believe. You wouldn't want to arrive in Portugal and find that your money was... gone! When you finally arrive in Portugal, you'd need to cancel the appointement of your fiscal representtive and change the address in your NIF and bank acount to your permanent address. Hope this makes sense.

As a EU passport holder, what documents if any I need to rent a residence?

I believe you only need your passport or ID card, if it's a short term rental contract not longer than 3 months, like an holiday let. For a longer contract you may need a NIF number (tax number), which you can get FREE of charge from any Tax Department in Portugal (Repartição de Finanças, or just Finanças). Once in Portugal, if you intend to stay long term you can apply for residency and will be given a Residents Card. Also FREE and easy to get at any "Loja do Cidadão". Just go to the nearest one in any town. But the landlord or agent may require other docs, such as proof of income, employment contract, bank statements, guarantor, etc. Different landlords may have different requirements depending on your situation. You must show proof that you can pay the rent.

@@tangodaze I'm not familiar with that situation. If you can prove that your Social Security income will continue after you move to Portugal (such as a permanent disability income) and it is enough to pay the rent plus living expenses, I guess that'll be ok. But it all depends on the landlord. Many may be nervous to accept you if they think your income could stop after you move. You'd have to satisfy them that you'll not lose your income. And there's a huge demand for properties to rent, more people searching than properties available to rent, likely to get worse as many foreigners are applying for visas as you can see here. Landlords are very choosy and rents have gone up and are still going up, sometimes to exhorbitant levels. Buying is easier, but prices have also gone up.

OK. I heard the answer around 35 min. Travel to Schengen area is OK. Outside Schengen you need to document your trip and reasons why.

Within the Shengen area there are not many checks when you cross borders by car, so no records of your trip by car from Portugal to Spain. But... there are other ways your travel footprint might be detected. For instance, when you use your bank card to book accommodation, or pay in a restaurant or shop. Heard of the NIF number? You'll need one and your bank account, cards, and all your financial activity is connected to it. The SEF can check in no time your digital prints... all over the place. Answer: follow the rules if you want to play the game.

If you are married to a portuguese citizen, you can get portuguese residency on the grounds of family reunion. I believe that you can enter Portugal with your wife without a visa as any other British citizen, for a maximum of 90 days, and once there you can apply for permanent residency (or at least residency as long as you are married to her). I suggest you check the portuguese consulate website of the country you are living in now, and make an appointment with them to get information specific to your situation.

Correct answer: No, you cannot apply from just anywhere. You have to apply from the country of your residence. If you have residence in a country that is not the country of your nationality, fine, but you must prove that you are resident in the country you are applying from.

What will be asked to prove your residence in a third country at a consulate? I have USA citizenship, with banks and address there, but living in South America, can I request my D7 in a South American embassy?

@@charliemontholon If you are a legal resident of the country where you are now, you'll have documents such as rental contracts, household bills, employment contract, salary receipts, tax receipts, etc, that show you have been resident there. I think any documents that show you have been paying taxes in that country are good, because you'll also need to show proof of income. Tax documents show both residency and income.

Most portuguese accountants will charge you around 50 Euros. You need to appoint a fiscal representative in Portugal to get your NIF and open your portuguese bank account if you are not living there yet. Anyone resident in Portugal who has a NIF, can be your fiscal representative, or you could appoint a professional such as an accountant, to be your fiscal representative and get a NIF for you and open a bank account. That fiscal representative will have the responsability to deal with any docs needed and will provide a point of contact and address for the docs to be sent to. Applying for a NIF is FREE of charge, opening a bank account is also FREE. You only pay the for the services of a fiscal representative, if you use one. If you have someone you know who is a resident in Portugal, with an address in Portugal, they can do it for you. Please be aware of sharks charging exhorbitant fees. The D7 visa is turning into a lucrative industry... for some.

Please also tell me about the recent denial of account opening for D7 applicants as we do have to open a bank account upfront prior to getting a D7 visa. I am very much worried in case Bank's in Portugal deny me the account and for such a petty reason my D7 visa is also denied.

@@raidergaming5248 I don't know about anyone being denied a bank account, banks are always trying to attract new customers, that's how they earn their keep. There must be some reason why a bank would not accept a new customer, who's going to have money coming in from abroad. Banks are required by law to verify that all money transfered to accounts is coming from legal sources, i.e. not from shady deals or ilegal business, or money laundering... so they'll vet their new customers. But if everything is legit, I don't see any problem.

@@donnacosta5633 infact the banks are now asking for TRC as a requirement for the expats which is not possible for a non resident applying for a D7 visa

@@raidergaming5248 The Tax Residency Certificate must be from the country you are living in now and where you have been paying your taxes, not a TCR from Portugal where you haven't filed any taxes yet. Banks will verify your tax status, they must ensure the money you transfer to Portugal is legit. If you have been paying taxes, it shouldn't be a problem. I don't know in which country you are based, but if you search online you'll be able to find out how to get a TCR where you are. You may be able to get it online, if your tax office offers that facility.
