My favourite reverb is the Lexicon 224 (hardware) set to program 1, options 7+8, 1.8slow, 2.8s mid, 1.2k xo, 2.8k treble dcy, 44 depth, 57ms pre, I also use a 224XL (also hardware) set to concert hall with 3s low, 2s mid, 720 xo, 6.3k treble dcy, 33 depth, 24ms pre, 50 chorus, 40 size, I tweak the settings on that one more. I used to use a PCM70, PCM91, PCM60, H3000, Rev7, and they are in my patchbay but most of the time I just use the two 224s. I do blend them, usually for vocals I use the 224 alone (it is quite dark), for instruments I blend the 224 a bit, and mostly the 224XL. If I want a slamming snare I’ll put on the Rev7 or PCM70 tiled room, and a bit to the 224XL. I don’t use plugins at all, I only record on two inch and mix on a Soundcraft 2400, I do get a bit of glue from the two inch and mixing to a 440C.

For the "do it all verb" I have always been a huge fan of Fab Filter Pro R and with the R2 it's just... The best got better ! amazing. For spring, just got the brand new spring from klanghelm and I guess I felt for it ! So cool with tons of vibe. For "Real life like" Open Air from Presonus is quite amazing and Fame studio from IK. Finally, for plates, I'm still searching the one. I use a seventh heaven a lot recently and I want to try Waves Alchemy verbs, they seem quite cool to use.

You watch other mix tutorials and you hear mixes that you think sound good, but then you hear a Marc Daniel Nelson mix. You realize that there's a whole other level of mixing even skilled professionals will never get to. The clarity, separation, punch, massive low end, and vibe are insane. I truly can't comprehend how you get to this point.

You can still get great sounding music with just a good set of ears and experience. But once you start to incorporate top of the line studio gear and pros doing fantastic takes, that could potentially sound better than a mixed song already just from the raw recordings itself. Getting it right from the source has been my biggest breakthroughs, which also takes time to get right. (Knowing what mic to use on a certain vocalist, ect). It's tiny differences that will all add up and you'll definitely hear it once you apply that on all the tracks to that song. Warren, Marc and everyone that's been hosted on this channel are absolute world-class at their craft. Thanks to this channel my music sounds marvelously well ❤

As 25+ years mixing engineer I must say Marc's videos are PHENOMENAL and always interesting. BTW hardware 250 has very different sound than UAD emulation in terms of "Depth", I didn't expect this difference in sound.

Thanks for the inspiration! I remember being unable to dial in expensive (i.e. Lexicon PCM70) reverbs properly, but using SPX990s was easy when mixing live shows. I'm talking about the early 2000s. To me, the good reverbs either weren't audible or too loud. I simply couldn't find a sweet spot. I took me years... and now: let me revisit this "Music Club C"! 😉

@Marc the short percussive 80’s-90’s reverb you are referring to, is most probably a Yamaha SPX90. That was a workhorse thrown over/under the Lexicon. The SPX had a short, aggressive reverb doing wonders on percussion and snare. Thanks for the video!

Ahhh fantastic Marc! It is astounding how some of the hardware units are deeper, richer, more stereo and more undpredictable. Wonder if you use something like the Abbey Road saturator on the input side of the plugin would help it sound more substantial. Also it sounds as if we would need a very low (like 1:5 to 1 ratio) on a compressor which is used as an expander (R-comp can do that nicely) Will try everything out! Congrats on another winner, keep rockin'! Oh - one tiny request: please hipass your talkback below 100 Hz - the stand adds a very tonal rumble which makes me look around my house and take the headphones off cuz it makes me think someone's stumbling through my attic ;P Blessings Stephan

Reverb is so useful beyond just making a space. I mostly use Fabfilter's ProR, or Sonible's Smart:Verb to create the reverb effect I am looking for, and I do blend them often. For quicker workflow in making layers of reverb CLA Epic is my other go to.

The groove difference with and without the grainy reverb. The reverbs fill in each others' spaces, kind of like how bringing out air on cymbals can make the vocal sound like it's more airy--maybe. So good what can be done with good reverb(s) use

Nice one, Marc. For shits and giggles, I just checked the current price of my first ever unit, the very VERY basic Accessit Spring; I wish I'd kept it now! 😮 Back in the 90's, apart from the 224XL, SPX90 and the great Rev 7, I always loved messing with the long verbs from the PCM70, its Infinite setting always came in handy for ethereal sound design, with some judicious return fader automation.

Great video. I assume as my mixing ears develop more I will be able to distinguish more of the nuances between the different makers of reverbs as they sounded similar. I can certainly tell if the reverb is too washy or convoluted, but there were aspects you mentioned that I have yet to wrap my head around. Definitely would appreciate an indeph discussion on PreDelay. I bought Sara Carter's mixing course in the academy which I saw she covers the topic so hopefully by the time Marc makes the video I will be more knowledgeable on the subject. I enjoy more of these long form video tutorials as they supplement my readings and exercises.

Reverb is basically a lot of little echoes from a number of sources so predelay is the time it takes for the first echoes to reach your ears. Think about a large garage, you clap your hands and it takes time for the sound to hit the walls and return. The longer the delay the larger the space and vice versa. In music you can time the delay to fit in the mix or for creative effects.

I think the designer of the EMT 250 said he modeled a concert hall, although maybe that was just marketing. Who the hell would pay $20,000 dollars in 1977 for a "plate" when everyone had them already. It certainly doesn't have the swell of a hall and people do tend to use it like a plate. I never thought about it before but that must be it.

I have an issue with a recording. The vocals are too breathy to my ears. What I mean is, the wind required to push the notes out seems to be competing with the note itself. It runs concurrent just behind the notes. I’ve heard this song for months and only just noticed this and now it’s like it’s all I hear. Is there a way to reduce this with EQ or something?
