Updating to a short shifter and conceptZ shifting bracket helped a lot for shifting and also the gear oil. I need to update my shifting cable still. It shifts a lot better now, but I know it could be better.

Really glad I stumbled onto this. I've had a steadily worsening 3/4 grind for years. I went through and rebuilt the engine years ago so I'm invested in the car. After many hours of trying to sourse a rebuilt kit I had given up for now and was getting used to granny shifting. Thank you for confirming what I need. I'm going to attempt the rebuild myself as I have previously rebuilt a manual trans for an 03 WRX and have the press and bearings tools.

Great vid, im jealous of the us prices for an r30a, theyre about double that here in the uk 😅. Im 1uz swapping my zx, i think ill be rebuilding my tired old gearbox before the new lump shreds whats left of my synchros lol. Im assuming the kits use the harder 98 on material you mentioned?
@runningrich10 ай бұрын
That will be an interesting swap. How does it fit?
@wefwefwef.10 ай бұрын
@@runningrich well its roughly physically the same size as the old vg30de albeit 50kg lighter, the 1uz into z32 swap has been done once or twice with the ls400 auto box so i know it will fit in the bay, and collins performance makes a 1uz to 300zx adaptor plate. The nissan vh41 v8 would be preferable but theyre very rare and expensive in the uk, but we have 1uz and 3uz coming out of our ears lol. Picked a vvt 1uz up out of a running donor with wiring, key and transponder for 850 quid, the whole swap should cost about 2500 with some minor fabrication, not a whole lot more than the cost of shipping all the parts to rebuild my vg30 over from the US!

Great info! I will very likely be coming back here at some point to get those part numbers I'm now on my 2nd 98 spec transmission for my Z32. I managed to strip off every tooth off 3rd gear, twice while flat shifting into 3rd. 1st 98 spec transmission lasted something like 5k miles or less. Nobody else seems to have had the issue I've had. SZ said it was probably the clutch I was using at the time (the engagement is best described as "violent"). Switched to their High 5 clutch so hopefully that solved my problem

STOP EVERYONE, DON'T BUY THE 98 TRANSMISSION. THEY FAIL!! Mine did, with, maybe 1250 miles on it. It's a very long story, my Z, but in short, it's a 95TT I bought in 96 and started a full restoration of it almost 5 years ago. I was just now starting to think it was FINALLY finished that my transmission failed. As a "precautionary" step, about three years ago I bought a new 98 5 speed transmission, despite my old one being fine. Between then and now I've had to pull and rebuild the engine an additional two times. First time for a blown Tomei head gasket, after about 400 miles, (don't use those, only oem with copper spray) and the second time for being stupid and NOT blocking off the oil tree filter bypass check valves after shimming the pressure regulators in the tree to increase the oil pressure. That took out all my bearings after about 500 miles. And now, with only 350 additional miles, for a total around 1250 miles, the transmision started whining, badly. I never knew about this, but apparently in "fixing" the sincros, which I never had a problem with, they F'd up something even worse. At least I still have my original transmision, whos sincros are fine and it doesn't whine. This is my Z if you'd like to see it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5vOioCGncmemaM
