Stan - I did all of this - installed my 12v all-in one ..... worked great for a day ..... then I parked under a car port - and forgot that the SL was still in "ON". switch position. Now everytiem I plug it in I pop the 10 amp fuse in my fuse panel. Any ideas what to look at ?
@jeepNtreetop6 ай бұрын
I’m not sure why parking under a carport would have any effect on the unit. The Starlink would just continue to search for a single. Try contacting Brandon at Star-Mount Systems. The number is on the website.

This is the second Starmount I’ve had. As seen in the video when we took apart my original model to get the dish out for installation into the new mount, there was zero moisture inside. That old punt was in operation and in use the entire previous year while I drove all over the country. I would say that those who have moisture issues are those who installed their dishes incorrectly.

Brendan you make awesome videos and you are a legend in Africa for us over landers in Africa who need connectivity (out goes the expensive Sat phones) Finally ordered my Gen 3 dish and the Gen3 12v conversion flat mount with the quick release plate. Cant wait to get this fitted onto my Land Crusier for my 3 month trip later this year. A quick question: is it better to screw/bolt down down the flat mount or do the suction feet provide a robust mounting - bearing in mind the rough terrain (but barely moving at 40kmph)
@jeepNtreetop8 ай бұрын
The suction cups work great but I use them because I remove my dish occasionally. If you do not want to remove your dish, a permanent mount is always better and more secure.

Great video, thanks for teaching us how to do this. I've seen a video where you can just pull apart the front from the back of the dish as it's only glued together, could you possibly use the top without the extra part of the back that's left over when you cut it with the Dremel, or do you need the extra back left on?

did you ever find out if you can just pull the face off?

Yes, looks very easy and it is. However, after my modification the router kept dropping out and eventually was unavailable. I managed to remove the dishy and did a hard reset on the router which got my a signal from the router, but now the dishy will not move off from “booting”. I have no idea what to do now as Starlink won’t be interested because I have butchered dishy and Star Mounts don’t seem to interested either. I am seriously thinking about buying another dish and stick with placing it on the roof. The star mount and removable mount shall need to stay on my RV roof as a very expensive ornament. If I could return the lot I would as after 4 days of fault finding and 1 day of use I’m not happy but I live in Scotland so not easy. I would seriously think hard about what your are doing if you select this product and the support or lack of you may get or not as the case may be. If this item was bought local I would be at the door demanding a refund

Stewart, sorry to hear that you are having troubles. I’ve had mine running now for over 2 years with zero issues. In reading the many forums most folks who do 12v conversions and have problems tend to trace the issue to an unreliable “stable” and strong enough power supply/source. Maybe start there?
@stewartrobertson12154 ай бұрын
@@jeepNtreetop Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I rigged up a fluke meter measuring the supply voltage at the terminals inside the mount and it had a constant 13.6volts for 12 hours. On checking 24hours later it was still 13.6Volts. I checked the output voltage on the 12V to 48V output to Starlink which is correct. So think we can rule out supply voltage. Interestingly, heard nothing from Star Mounts in 7 days, shockingly bad customer support.

I've seen the marker trick, to mark the cut line before, but I wonder why you wouldn't just clamp your cutting tool at that height off the table, then feed th dish into the stationary cutting tool. It would be a perfectly flat cut, and should work in theory.

I wouldn't call it a "rip-off", although I would personally never pay anything like that amount for something I can DIY. As for your own hacked system, you're full of crap. While it's certainly possible, and I've seen other videos doing that very thing, it's very risky (can easily brick your Dishy), a LOT of work, and costs a LOT more than £10. You don't get to not count parts and supplies that you happened to have on hand that others definitely won't.

With the wifi modem built into the mount, is the signal weaker? Also, does flat mounting the dish have any effect on acquiring satellites?
@jeepNtreetop10 ай бұрын
The dish has no issues acquiring signal, in fact it acquires much quicker now. As for the Wi-Fi the signal strength is adequate for its intended purpose. This setup is designed to be mounted on a a vehicle (RV/boat/or portable in some cases) and provide strong signal to that area. If you need a stronger signal or even a hardwired connection a LAN port is provided on the mount to allow for the connection of a Wi-Fi booster or directly to your computer.

Good looking product. I've done away with the router and in my RV I just power a POE off of my 48v DC system (I run 48v instead of 12v to my Victron). I run a similar router, which keeps a continuous site to site VPN tunnel with my office when I'm on the road. I however still use the full unmodified dish, which I just put on a pole when stationary. I considered flat mounting, but was concerned about the possibility of reduced throughput, by not having it ideally pointed. Has anyone compared the before and after? I may consider doing some performance tests with my existing setup before taking this plunge. My luck though Starlink will come out with a firmware update that blocks Internet when it senses the motors are disconnected. After all, they sell an "in-motion" dish/service so if a modification like this becomes too popular I could see them ensuring it gets blocked some how. Glad it works. Hope it continues to work. I saw several of these flat mounts on race cars at the King of the Hammers earlier this month.
@jeepNtreetop8 ай бұрын
There are thousands of flat mounted dishes out in the field now. “Pointing” the dish is no longer necessary with the hundreds of satellites now in orbit.
@awo1fman6 ай бұрын
The flat mounts you see on race cars are official Starlink flatmount systems that never had motors and haven't been hacked. They are a lot more expensive out of the box, but keep the warranty and factory environmental resistance. I don't think they'll ever bother disabling hacked Dishies. After all, the profit comes from the monthly service fees, and if you convert a stationary mount to a flat mount you'll be paying more for the service but they'll have less investment in the hardware, so it's just as much a win/win for them as it is for you.

So its $600 for the dish plus $969 for the kit and $200 for the operation. So in total its $1769 for a device that is a violation of TOS to use in motion. Uh, why not just pay the $2500...

@robertdippold79859 ай бұрын
The obvious reply is over tightening. The non obvious observation is that the bolts were tightened just enough to slightly compress the gasket. There is so much heat build up increasing pressure that likely causes the cracking. That is likely the issue. Design flaw.

I just went through this: their marker+tape measurement is horrible. It’s off by something like 5mm with the Pro RJ45 mount, so you’ll spend hours sanding the thing down to be flush with the box. For $5 I could make a jig that would give a way more professional mark. And they don’t even link to the right instructions with their QR code “where the fuck is the RJ45 instructions??” (They’re under the all in one mount). Overall 👎 for how expensive it is, very shoddy process.
