What he called a big magnet is actually a ferrite ring that keeps radio frequencies from traveling up the wire. You actually do need that specially with the different radio frequencies coming from an automobile
@jeepNtreetop2 жыл бұрын
I caught that in the description when Brandon was removing it. As a amateur radio operator I am plenty familiar with ferrite rings since we use them all the time. In this application I am guessing that it was intended to prevent RF noise when the motors are engaged, but since we removed the motors and potentially the source of the RF interference, the core is no longer needed.

When Starlink first launched they had fewer satellites in the sky and to get reliable connections it was better to tilt the dish towards the area where most of the satellites were at the time. Nice video, thank you! ... My experience is that the Starlink proprietary STX connectors might not be as waterproof as many hope. In my case, about 3 weeks after I flat mounted my Dishy in the Starmount flat mount low profile, my system stopped working after a night with heavy rain. I then replaced the STX connectors with a waterproof RJ-45 coupler, which brought the system back to life. Thus my suggestion would be to consider a mount with a truely waterproof connector/coupler from a very beginning. Starmount's "all in one" model for example seemingly has such a connector.
@jeepNtreetop Жыл бұрын
So you cut the Starlink connector off and exited the Star-Mount with a pigtail? In my case I filled the two little holes at the top of the Starlink connector with dielectric grease and then ran a piece of heat shrink over the top. So far it has been working well, going on almost a year.
@michaelmeier5619 Жыл бұрын
@@jeepNtreetop At the moment my situation is still improvised as I have not found a waterproof RJ-45 coupler that can be easily diretcly mounted to the low profile Starmount. Two questions: 1. Does Starlink dishes need to face the satellites all the time? With the dish fixed on the hood, it won't be able to move to face the satellites. 2. I heard that Starlink RV version is portable but not mobile. Will it work while driving down the road?
@jeepNtreetop Жыл бұрын
The dish works perfectly fine pointing straight up at the sky. The Starlink dish uses a phased array system to “point” at the satellites. And I subscribe to the RV service and it works while I am driving down the road. The dish itself has a gps receiver internally so it is programmed to turn off at above 80mph which is not an issue for most RVs

That's a workable solution but where I take my 4X4 RV the dish would be broken off the mounting brackets after 250 miles of rocky dirt roads. I chose to get the click-in bracket (Amazon) on the end of the 3ft pole I mounted permanently on my RV ladder. Need internet, slide the dish out of the outside storage cabinet, click into the end of the pole and plug into the permanently mounted SL cable. Since SL requires nearly 100% line of sight I ordered another extra long SL cable if my rig doesn't have line of sight I throw it on the ground and set the dish 75ft away from the rig in clear line of sight. Better than moving the rig depending where I'm camping.

Did you do a permanent install or configurable to remove wire/cable in case you need to move the dish to get a clear view of the sky? Trying to figure out wiring onto the roof without having to buy another cable on my overlanding truck rig.

Thanks Alex, Brandon is a cool dude, isn’t he? in the video I simply routed the cable through the door seal (in the Jeep it’s real easy). I did however find and bought bulkhead connectors that pass the shield through the cable and will be showing those in my next video. I’ll have to cut the cable to install them. But for now I’m just running the cable through the door. Brandon sells a quick release mount that I have so my dish will be mounted semipermanently in that mount on the back of my rig with a short cable going into the Jeep and 12v router. Then if needed, I can snap the dish off the mount, add an extension cable, and place it in an unobtrusive location.

is this working with regular starlink dish and roam plan ?? Because when the Starlink dish is set upright, the dish moves to make a connection. Can I use it without any problems without that process?
@jeepNtreetop Жыл бұрын
Yes I’m using the regular rectangular dish with the RV roam service plan.

@@jeepNtreetop same as me, I should consider mounting it the same way Even if the dish is fixed to the hood, the Internet connection works fine!?

@@junohoh6346 yes! No issues at all.

can the dish still melt snow?
@jeepNtreetop2 жыл бұрын
Yes! The only thing that is disconnected is the motors. But it has to heat a bit longer since it has the polycarbonate cover.

The dish is loose in the setup with the plastic "tub". It would be good to have something to fixate the dish inside the "tub". Otherwise, vibrations will kill it i guess

The dish is press fit in the enclosure and is a very tight fit. The lid holds it down as and makes it water and airtight. So far there has not been an issue with the hundreds of units out in the field, including the one that is mounted to the designer’s Baja 500 race car. If his unit can survive the torture of Baja race, I figure it can withstand anything I’ll ever put mine through.

If that twisted white cable running from the connector is coaxial i would be worried about its performance, having been so twisted. Coaxial cable has dimensions that must be maintained to properly conduct, contain, and protect radio frequencies (the carrier frequency)...I'm not even half way through the vid yet so...let's see how well it tests out. 🤔 Well @ 16:45 We get a gander at the innards of that white sheath and its not coaxial, but still so much twist...🤨 untwisting it was a great idea, let's see the test 😕
@jeepNtreetop2 жыл бұрын
It tested out ok and works great! What had happened was that prior to this video I had the dish plugged in and sitting upside down in the back of my Jeep overnight so apparently it was rotating the motors trying to find a signal. So the base was just twisting causing the cable to twist….

@@jeepNtreetop oops 😬 😅 😳 Glad its working, no damage done👍! I thought it came from factory like that while watching the vid.

can you make wifi calls with starlink?
@jeepNtreetop2 жыл бұрын
Yes you absolutely can! As a matter of fact I was driving and intentionally drove into a known cellular dead spot and my call seamlessly switched from cell to Wi-Fi calling and then when I was back in good cell coverage I switched off the starlink router and again my call automatically switched back to cell service without missing a beat! So no more dropped calls!

So we have a rear view mirror camera, gps, cell phone, ham radio, a tablet, and another cell phone or tablet below it. I don't think you have enough devices in there.
@jeepNtreetop Жыл бұрын
The second tablet below the first was placed there, as mentioned in the video, I believe 3 times for “ demonstration purposes only” to show the audience that the dish works while “in-motion”. I do not watch Netflix while driving. The top tablet runs my Gaia GPS maps while I’m off road, which is cool thing about the Starlink Flat mount in motion setup because I always have up to date real-time maps- no need to download them ahead of time!
