I was there! I worked at the Southern California Renaissance Faire when it was sold to another company and all the attempts at historical accuracy were wrung out of it. As you probably already know, it was all about money. The boothies always had more lax standards in their costuming, but when the new company came in, those standards were dropped further, and the standards for everyone else were loosened. They brought in a LARPing group and fantasy characters to attract more visitors. Then the only people who actually cared about historical accuracy were some of the actors who had been around for a long time, but most of those people have either been forced out by the company, or they’ve been dying off because they’re either really old, really poor, or both.

The Middle Ages and surrounding periods have been subject to hit pieces historically speaking in large part because Enlightenment thinkers wanted to show they were BETTER than their ancestors

I mean, the only Ren Faire I have gone to was one that for your first quest, you had to learn about each "guild" that ranged from Spanish, German, French, English, Pirates (as in the historical type), and a few outliers like Dutch Each was historically themed with an era and craft and taught you all about it. My favorites were the weaving booth that showed how they made fabric in the 12th century with old looms, the library booth that showed you how to make paper from old linen and pulp like they did in the old times and let you bring home a small sheet that you made from scratch, and the weaponry booths that taught how a lot of medieval weapons were originally farming tools because a lot of militias didn't have access to fancy weapons and farming tools were plenty deadly if used wrong enough (axes and sithes being perfect examples). All of the people who ran the booths, if you asked the right questions, would just info dump and it was awesome because you can tell that this is just legit their passion. One of the stonemasons showed me and my friend exactly how to carve intricate designs into stone. The archer made historically accurate bows that he carved by hand and taught us about different arrows tips and their purposes. One of the armorers had a cool ass metal glove that when put on, could withstand a heavy blow of a mallet and disperse the blow so you couldn't feel it (and let us try it on so he could demonstrate) and worked like an armadillo shell with its plated sections to open and close. One of the dudes at the pirate booth talked for about 45 minutes on the range of old pirate vessels (from row boat with a cannon on it to the typical boats you think of) and the symbolism of different flags (if I remember correctly - red flag means take no captives, and black flags would typically have a symbol of what they wanted (money, weapons, food, etc.) where if you complied they would just grab and go). A bunch of booths had old style gambling games that you would have played with dice/cards/specialized decks that you learned as part of your quest (that were free obvi but were typically gambling games). All the falconry birds were rescues that couldn't be released and would typically go to these events to help raise money for conservation efforts and gained their name based on how they ended up (ex: a barn owl who won a fight with tree trimmers at the cost of an eye protecting her nest got the name Freya). As far as I'm aware this isn't the norm, but Ren Faires arent always just horny. Everyone at the booths were super nice and offered water, food, and AC if we needed a break from the heat, I got a bunch of compliments on my handmade mushroom cosplay, and my friend ended up getting surprisingly extremely helpful advice on college scholarship opportunities/on campus assistance that we didn't know about. Honestly, I would highly recommend checking out your local Ren Faire if yours in anything like mine!

The Renaissance Fair in my area was shut down because there was an outbreak of crabs. And many people complained about finding paraphernalia all over the grounds that they were hosted on.

What kind of paraphernalia? I feel like that's really important for context. Also.... I feel like 90% of people probably don't know this, but paraphernalia can virtually mean anything. It can mean any object associated with an activity that you might do. I know that it's usually contextually related to drugs, but if you hear some sort of info from a news station that they 'found paraphernalia' and don't clarify that it's from drugs or something then there's a problem. Like you could literally go out and have a picnic and accidentally leave a cup behind, that cup could be considered "paraphernalia". So, the way people typically use this word is a very loose definition of the word at best.

For a couple of weeks in July they do a much better version of Renn that's devoid of most of the bad parts. And since it's culturally significant, you get a much better experience of the good parts. Í would not recommend travelling overseas for American Renn.

Getting married at Texas ren fest this year! Honestly love the place grew up there and now I party there as an adult. It’s not as bad as people say it is. 1:09 For the aesthetic and the fact that we don't have to deal with any of the negatives you just listed. Also, despite the name, ren faires aren't nearly as focused on any one specific time period as you'd think, it's much more broad and vague. If you want specific eras without the fantasy, SCA is the place to go. I know this because my parents are sca and ren faire people, also known as Scadians and Rennies. They met through sca, and they've raised me in the ren faire circuit, I regularly spend Summer weekends working with my mom, setting up the booth, selling her merchandise, and whatever else she needs me to do, as well as window shopping, and walking around with friends when my friends are at the same event as me.

The ren fair that I go to (Local to my rough area), is pretty family friendly. The birds of prey and joust shows are fun, and you can go fishing at their pond and buy goodies.

My grandmother used to be head of a Renaissance Faire and quite a few years back it was being held at a local park and a woman and her son were sitting under a tree minding their business when a branch fell down on them and the mother pushed her son out of the way and was crushed to death by the branch. I worked at the Kansas Ren Fair from 15-17 years old. I was just a cook in the Italian booth, and I got hit on by older men who would come in to get free food (workers get free food). It was awkward and by the end of the season (sept 1-oct 15) I would be told of all the places workers would do it, one place was on the zip line stand. That place sucked but some of the workers were cool to hang out with and usually at the end of the season we would free stuff that they didn’t want to go to waste.

HOLY SHIT im so happy you talked about the texas ren fest, the camping is really the reason a lot of people go. Naked jenga, orgy camp, BDSM camps, alcohol camps are all real things. You will also get acosted by both men and women. While I have never participated in the debauchery it is literally so much fun.

I feel like ren fairs have definitely gotten a lot more kid friendly in the last few years, at least during the day. I used to go to the one in georgia with my family every year when i was a kid and there were a LOT of acts and shows that i wasnt allowed to see or probably shouldnt have seen (anybody remember Dead Bob?). Now its mostly musical acts or some kid friendly humor, most of the older, raunchier performers have either been retired or pushed out

Sherwood Faire, last time I went, had replica but fully functional flintlock style pistols you could just buy from a guy. They checked my bag at the gate but also I could just buy a gun if I wanted to. For like three hundred dollars. Texas! I almost did, honestly; they were sick as hell.
