I've been to a few weddings now. They're horribly boring. But I went to one this past summer that was absolutely amazing. The bride and groom really wanted it to be a party for the guests. Ceremony was 20 minutes. The rest was open buffet, a dance floor, and some games. There was a place to put coats and a change of clothes if you didn't want to stay in your formal attire. There was a quiet room if anyone got overwhelmed. I have so much anxiety around social situations and had a great time.

Haha, true. And your rent's pretty safe, since catering is probably the last thing people want to skimp on. You can easily skip live music or the professional photographer to lower your costs - no one complains because you make a Spotify playlist and I'm sure you have at least one friend who can take an ok photograph. But everyone with a working brain realises that making all of your own food for an entire wedding and serving it would be a stress-inducing logistical nightmare that just goes on and on for the entire evening.

Most people I know who spent thousands on a wedding ended up divorced, while those who went the cheaper route (EX: Courthouse wedding with a modest celebration afterwards) have been married for YEARS. Funny enough, one guy I know spent big money on not only his first wedding, but also his SECOND wedding...which both ended up in divorce. His third marriage where he eloped has been his longest lasting relationship ever. lol Just a weird coincidence...?

I went to a wedding once where the ceremony was "log" themed (bride's choice) and just had a bunch of logs everywhere covered in flowers and glitter. The reception, however, was starwars themed (grooms choice). The bride and groom came out into the hall as husband an wife through a tunnel of friends and family holding up light sabers. The food was emaculate and the weird lack of coordination between the two themes made it very memorable and funny.

My wife and I had a COVID wedding and honestly it was the greatest fucking thing, because it gave us an excuse to have exactly the wedding we wanted without having to cave to the wants of family. I haven't finished the video yet but one of the worst parts of having a wedding yourself is your immediate families' demands, including all the people (extended family you see once or less per year, family friends or otherwise) they expect you to invite. And the fact you apparently are not allowed to only invite the cousins you're somewhat close to and not the rest. So yeah we didn't have to fulfil any requests, our dress code was casual, everyone got personal make-your-own fajitas (and TONS of other food), we did fancy donuts instead of cake and the entire thing was only 4 hours long. I think we did a pretty damn good job all things considered. Edit: I also have to share the best wedding I've ever been to (other than my own) that was a friend's wedding at a beautiful canoeing resort, and it was viking themed, and we were encouraged to dress up as vikings, so you bet your ass we dressed up as vikings. I have never been so comfortable and had so much fun at another person's wedding before.

All the wedding traditions of other countries can be condensed into one. First, the Chinese bride is going to cry with her female relatives/friends, then as day of the wedding comes she can finally stop crying cause some Indian friends decided to steal her soon-to-be husband's shoes and demanded him to hand them money as a joke, then the South Korean bros come in, swoop the groom of his feet, and start beating that same feet. That's just hilarious.

I’ve always hated weddings, I’ve always hated a lot of social occasions! Which makes me so goddamn grateful that my stepmom understood how much weddings suck when she married my dad because she actually made it kickass. 10 minute reception, no dress code besides the groomsman and bridesmaids (even then we got to choose which version of the suits and dresses we liked the best, no need to match,) literally just a dad barbecue for most of the time and you could leave whenever you want. It was also just in a cute park, didn’t even have to rent a single thing and only the cool family and friends were invited. Minimal effort, do whatever you want type event. Everyone thank my stepmom.

Hell yes! They wanna keep the ceremony 30 minutes TOPS, less if possible, and then party the night away! There is a COOL ASS CUSTOM FORGED SWORD INVOLVED IN THE CEREMONY!!! And they're gonna be handfasted to the sword as they say their vows! I will say, the best wedding I ever went to was my first one, and it was sci-fi themed. Instead of formal wear, you got to literally cosplay as whatever fantasy/sci-fi/whatever character you wanted to. The bride and groom were dressed up too: the groom, the 10th doctor from Dr. Who (my whole family and I were characters from that show), and the bride was a stormtrooper. There were cardboard cutouts of Star Wars, Star Trek, DC, Doctor Who, and more characters on the dance floor, and a TARDIS directly in the middle. There was a whole lot more, but those were the highlights. All this to say, that’s the only fun wedding I’ve ever been to, and if mine isn’t like that one, I’m literally just not getting married.

I was dragged to the wedding of my then-girlfriend's brother, and it was held in his backyard. His wife was absolutely stunning in her dress... however he was wearing one of those T-shirts that have a simple tux design printed on it with camo cargo pants and muddy sneakers. It was a small and quick wedding. I understand that nicer weddings are expensive, but I'd hate myself for wasting an extremely special and magical day with someone who couldn't at least wear something a little more formal and clean if I was in the wife's comparitively elegant shoes. I'm sure it was agreed and planned beforehand but it was so cringe from an outsider's perspective
@yahiiia9269
@yahiiia9269 Жыл бұрын
It's cringe from outsiders perspectives because weddings are fundamentally based on complete and utter delusion. If the delusion breaks, the brain short-circuits and you cringe. There is nothing special about the day or the clothing or the items or the cake, the person you are with is the special and magical part, every day of your life. If only a single day with someone is considered "magical" and "special", then maybe you're with the wrong person. The sole reason why so many people fall for "special" and "magical" on wedding days, is marketing. The same reason why pugs are breeds designed to suffer and our feet are unhealthy due to our toes needing to contort like crazy in shoes that don't offer sufficient toe space, reducing our overall health, it's all a sham, to make money. You and many others were manipulated into thinking a day should be special, instead of the fact that you are supposed to spend every day with people who are special to you! Who knows, maybe he bought the dress for her and couldn't afford anything for himself, solely so she could feel beautiful. That changes the whole story in an instant. If we don't know the full story, all complexity and beauty is lost to the observer. Of course things become cringe when you don't know anything about these people, you were the npc, the side-character in that story. Your perspective was entirely meaningless to them. Perhaps one day, they will have a big wedding when they're more comfortable financially, due to having saved up, maybe they used the money for a long vacation or to rest easy together later in life, maybe they were unsure if they'd stay together and to that I say, they wasted no money on someone who might turn out a bad match.

I have been to exactly two (2) weddings that were not a horrible, stressful day, one of which I was the "maid" of honor for, and the main reason those were cool and not terrible was because they tried to be as little like a traditional Western wedding as possible. One was Halloween-themed, so there was individually wrapped candy scattered on the tables, everyone dressed up in costumes (and like, *actual* costumes and not "formal" costumes; two people in the wedding party were dressed in inflatable Patrick Starr onesies), and after dinner we played Ultimate Werewolf. Plus, the bride is a crochet artist and she handmade a lot of the decorations and her whole bouquet. The other was fantasy-themed, and several people including the notary showed up in straight-up armor, the bride and groom handed out "collectable cards" they made about all their inside jokes and all the guests got to trade them around, and instead of a bible they swore over a copy of D&D 5e Dungeon Master's Guide. I will never pass up an opportunity to hype up nonstandard weddings, especially if it saves money and makes the whole event, like, *actually fun.*

Wedding photographer and videographer here so I’m biased, but also I totally agree with most of this. When my husband and I got married we spent under $3k (which still feels like a lot but what you gonna do) and had a wedding with 40 people max, all of our favorite people who we knew would blend well and people have told us multiple times we had a super fun wedding because it was all under 4 hours of time and we had strategic invites. Also, no we don’t overcharge cause it’s a wedding. I have to do a LOT more on a wedding day than I would with other types of photo and video work and there’s a LOT more pressure for a million angles and options because brides stress. I put a lot of effort into the experience I provide brides including gifts, client aid/calls, etc. Also it’s my full time job so you bet I’m charging so I can survive and afford to actually do my job.

So i thought you might enjoy learning about some wedding traditions from Turkiye! There's a "henna night" that's only for women to gather around and dance before the actual wedding and the bride generally wears red. They dance to random songs really, but there's a tradition of making the bride sit down, and then walking around her in a circle with candles in hands while her mother or someone close applies henna on her hands and puts gold, and then there's a song called "high high hills" that they all sing until the bride cries. (The bride has a red veil on her head, and someone looks under it to see if she's crying yet every once in a while, and once she sheds a tear they're all like "the bride cried!" and then it's over lol.) The crying part comes from how in the older times women used to go to far away places after getting married and transportation was really hard so they'd go really long without seeing their families and miss them. The song's lyrics even go like "let them not build houses on high high hills, let them not send their daughters to far away lands, let them not scorn the apple of her mother's eye, let the flying birds know i missed my mother, my father and my village." So it's to express sadness over leaving your family, but for the rest of the night everyone dances like crazy. And for the actual wedding, in some places people just dance (they especially do halay) the whole day. The groom goes to get the bride from her house and everyone else follows them with cars (this is generally for closer people) and then they go to the wedding place with a big tail of cars following them (they bind a towel or scarf around the car's mirror so people know which cars to follow). And every city has its own wedding food, but there's generally rice and meat involved. I go to every wedding i'm invited to because i love the wedding food. The stealing shoe thing also made me think of another tradition. Both the groom and the bride have someone by their sides (i guess groomsman and brideswoman? Idk if there's an english equivalent.) and sometimes people pull pranks on them. Like kidnapping the groom and using him for ransom from the groomsman. The groomsman has to get him before the ceremony.

THANK YOU!!! I’ve thought this for ages. It’s like many girls feel the need or desire to have a wedding that lives up to a royalty’s standard of wedding. A marriage is literally the most intimate relationship you can have with one other human being, and yet everyone else is involved with the 2 people kissing, for some reason? Then my dad had to drop money on the right kind of suit even though he had other suits that still looked nice. I was asked to as well, but didn’t comply. If you want me there, i’ll wear something affordable, thank you. It never even came up. But the money is so ridiculous. You NAILED IT!

I still remember my coworker some years ago. Her husband is a grocery store clerk, which is minimum wage, while we made $16.50/hr. She was complaining about how she and the guy went into debt for around $30K, and the wedding planner bailed on them for whatever reason. They couldn't get refunds because the venues didn't allow it, idk why. And that's not even the full cost because both their parents were contributing $45K additional to their weddin. I have no clue why people would spend so much money to show off when it gives them so much stress. I'm an introvert. I don't like parties or other people all that much. I told my partner I want to go to the municipal court and have a backyard gathering with close friends and family so we don't have to spend that much money. Idk, to me, affording a mortgage and cost of family planning is more important than a stresful $75K party
@tallulahraccoon3832
@tallulahraccoon3832 Жыл бұрын
Agree. And even if you were to take the introvert part out of the equation, it's still such a huge amount of money to just spend it on a party...Not saying others aren't allowed to do that but it would burn a whole into my heart to have it go down the drain for that instead of something useful you can benefit from more fundamentally in the long run like the things you mentioned. Much love to you ❤

Not trying to change your mind on any of this. I just want to put out to the world that you absolutely CAN have your fancy party (aka wedding) without it costing THAT much. Most weddings ARE going to cost at least a few thousand dollars, but it definitely doesn't have to cost more than, like, 15k-20k. Some people are able to get the cost down even lower, and keep it around 5k.

I‘ve had great and not so great times at weddings as a guest but the overarching impression I got at 95% of them is that the hosts can’t even really enjoy themselves? Like they’re super stressed from all the organisation building up to the big day, constantly running around trying to do all their guests justice but aren’t able to get into meaningful conversations with any of them, constant photo ops and when they finally make it to that ludicrously expensive buffet they meticulously picked all the best stuff is gone. I feel like a lot of them romanticise it in retrospect saying how this was their best day ever but few actually seemed to be feeling it in the moment.

My best friend literally got married in our backyard and spent I think just over a grand on everything, all the decorations were from op shops, cheap shops or fb marketplace, and she had a bunch of friends and family help out with things like photography. As much as I don't see much point in weddings, it was kinda cool to see someone be so thrifty planning their own wedding

The formal suite thing is one reason why clothing shouldn't be "gendered-locked" by societal norms since it's very possible to find a dress that can be passed off as "formal" for less than $50 at certain stores and can be used multiple times for a variety of events. Just make sure the dress fits your frame and covers all the bits and it should be fine.

We cut down on costs by having it in my grandpa's garden and basically DIYing everything. I made our Save the Dates in Paint tool Sai and sent them via email/text. I plan to splurge about $400 on my wedding dress + accessories from Etsy, and we want to splurge on a cool looking cake, maybe a skull or a human heart. 😀 Ain't nobody walking me down the fucking aisle, either. My wedding was supposed to just be the courthouse and then the pub, but my Jamaican mother insisted we include Jesus…so we tootsie rolled our way down the street to a chapel and had a $200 ceremony. Best day EVER! It was complete with the groom’s drunk best friend crying harder than all of us, inappropriate (yet adorable) flirting between said friend and another married friend, sitting up all night singing along to Radiohead…very loudly. 15 years later, we are planning a “good for us” ceremony that will be a little more “organized “ and a little less “The Hangover”. Almost forgot…had to mention that we live in Vegas…so we REALLY thought we were funny…lol. You don’t need to spend a home down payment on a wedding. It’s over so fast, it really is crazy to go into debt like that. I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything.

Hi, I was a wardrobe consultant for 3 years. Renting is better _only_ if you think you’re only gonna wear it once or twice within the next 3 years. If you have a few weddings, or some sick elderly relatives, or are nearing graduation, don’t waste your money renting. Just buy a $300-$500 suit from a place like Jos A Bank, Men’s Wearhouse, or something. You dip under $300 and it’s gonna be cheap polyester, itchy, and not fit right. But like $300 and maybe $30 in tailoring and it’ll be comfortable, look good, and last you several _years_ if you take care of it.

the best wedding tradition I've ever heard of is from Mauritania! it's that after the wedding at any random time the bride will escape from the groom with the help of her friends and he has to find her with the help of his friends, it's like hide and seek but things like guarding the bride so she can't escape and putting sleeping pills in people's tea so she can is all fair game! Weird wedding traditions from around the world: Poland's edition In my country we have a tradition called "Brama" which means "Gate" and its whole point is for the [future] newlyweds to buy out their [future] spouse from the community. Most commonly it's neighbors and some more distant acquaintances, close enough to know when youre getting married but not close enough to get an invite. In it's most basic form its a "gate" made by tying up a ribbon or a string on the way between bride's and groom's houses and church/wedding venue. It can be more decorative and elaborate, but it can be just a string hung between two lamp posts. The gate is guarded by the neighbors and acquaintances and the bride or the groom have to either pass some challenges or pay a "ransom" to them, to be allowed to pass - usually it's wine/vodka for adults and cady for kids. Basically anyone can make the gate, so it can be as little as one or none and as much as a dozen, multipled by both houses [since it's customary to start the wedding from your parents house], so best men and bridesmaids are expected to have several bottles of alcohol and a big bag of candy ready, just in case. It can be annoying, because it can sometimes happen that some local drunks make one, even if they dont know the couple, but it's cutomary that the best man is supposed to negotiate the terms of the "ransom", to not spoil the day for the [future] newlyweds, if the gate keepers are more pushy and a nuisance.

Weddings are only horribly boring if you lack connection to the other people attending the wedding. When my best friend got married, you bet your ass the wedding was fkcing AMAZING. And not because they arranged it better than any other wedding - it was the same deal, and I'm sure there were plenty of bored guests there who were too disconnected from everyone else to have a good time - but I personally had a blast mingling and partying with my friend's family (who I hadn't seen in a few years and was excited to reconnect with) and all her friends that I either knew from before or met at the hen do (and we're all still friends to this day). At the same time, it was fun to see what my friend's now-husband's family and friends were like, because when else would I get that opportunity? I arrived a day early to help out with preparations, so I'd gotten to know some of them before the wedding even started, which again made the wedding day more fun. KNOW YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY, and I promise weddings will be a lot less boring for you. It makes perfect sense for the bride and groom to want to gather their beloved ones in the same spot, for once in their life, and have them meet and mingle. When else is that ever going to happen? It's actually a pretty cool concept. Shame weddings have gotten so expensive though. I feel like if you scaled the whole thing down cost-wise and focused on the actual point of a wedding - the joining of two families, and two friend groups - you'd have laid good groundwork for a wedding. After that it IS up to the guests to be good sports.

In Romania we have the tradition of ,,stealing the bride"; A few random people,whenever they decide to just sneakily take the bride away and the groom has to haggle with them to get her back,it's usually a small amount of money and a bottle of something for each thief,plus the ocasional dares from them to the groom,pretty amusing when you see it. Also it's often seen not as a bad financial decision but quite the opposite because EVERYBODY attending as guests offer money to the couple,almost all the time in secret and it's a pretty big sum too.

I’ve been to two weddings. Once when I was really young and I was the flower girl but I screwed it up so bad that they asked me to stop in the middle of it… Edit: i was probably like four or five at the time. barley remember anything about it. i was told that i was the flower girl, but i had zero clue what that meant. a basket of petals was shoved in my hands and i was told to throw them. so i started walking down the isle and throwing the flowers... but the petals didn't land where i wanted them to land. and for some reason i felt the need to bend down, pick up each one and carefully place them where i wanted them to go... when i got halfway down the isle, i was told to stop and sit down.

I was the ring bearer at one and dropped the rings, one rolled under everyone's chairs and took like 15 minutes of awkward mumbling and shuffling to find, then caught the leg belt thing not knowing what it was......yeh I was like 6

I've only been to one wedding in my life. I was like 8 to 10 so I don't remember a whole lot from it but it was long and tedious for a young child.

For our wedding, we spent around $10k for everything. Venue, catering for 100, dessert table, dress and alterations, suits, photographer, photobooth, everything. Paid for it in cash, got rid of all the weird traditions, and had a super short ceremony so everyone could just get to hanging out and having fun. $10k isn’t pocket change, but compared to the debt some people go into for their weddings to be a fraction as nice as ours was, it was a steal. I definitely wouldn't go that route again if I could get a do-over (I barely wanted to do a full wedding in the first place), but for a one-time thing, it was a beautiful memory to have.

Im in the process of planning a wedding, and my god are the prices insane!!!! I had a venue tell me that their food and beverage minimum was 15k-24k! Im only having 40 people at my wedding, and im not spending 15k for them to eat. Then i had another venue that was reasonably prices, but i had to pay a rental fee for each individual table and chair that i needed. Luckily, i found a venue that is a little out of the budget that i had in mind, but its worth it after the headache of everything else. It's 5,800 in total. I have access to their mansion, their lawn and gardens, and their barn, and i have it all day from 8am-12 midnight.
