ok so it's been pointed out that there's a pretty major flaw with my thesis for this video. gundam clearly wasn't written to sell toys but it WAS made with support of a line of toys that was apparently SO unsuccessful that not only did the company go bankrupt after, the article about this anime i was reading literally didn't mention them lol. obviously the point of this video isnt the history of gundam, but my review and analysis, which i do stand by completely so mostly just extremely embrassing, but will maybe re-edit this. OR maybe i'll just leave my failures open for the world to see, who knows dude
@glowstickless
@glowstickless 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the toy line is why the gundam and white base are so bright and colorful. Tomino originally wanted the gundam to be dark colors but was over ruled, however the toy companies didn't care about the "bad guys" as much which is why the zaku's are a more war appropriate army green. You did make a fair point though. Most people think the toys in question are gunpla but they didn't come untill later. And despite how much Tomino dislikes them the model kits are what saved the franchise in the end.

When Tomino was making gundam, he was probably executing one of the greatest scams in the animation world. He wanted to tell a story that has possibly never done before. A space opera set with giant machines as the backdrop. But nobody wants to fund such a profitably questionable endeavor. And so Tomino began to concoct his scheme of presenting this idea to a toy company, like it was just another super robot anime that will sell toys and appeal to kids. In the process though he had to make a lot of adjustments on his end. 1) The main protagonist was changed from a Military Aged Male, to a early teen so the target audience can hopefully relate. 2) The Industrial Machine that was the gundam, with its Gray and black look was recolored with Red White and Blues so the toy will hopefully appeal to kids. 3) Although he got his point across and introduced the concept of a 'Grunt Unit', he still had to somewhat make the MONSTER OF THE WEEK format the sponsors were looking for. Those are the major things I remember. As for the scam 1) He disguised his Space Opera show as a Show for kids that would generate toys for toy companies. 2) The real 'Protagonist' was actually the Zaku. Introducing the concept of the Grunt Unit and it showed. The Zaku actually sells more toys than the Gundam back in the day and the Zaku is still an Iconic design to this day.

Now I actually dont think too highly of Tomino personally. I mean, what he did is amazing and thank you very much for giving us gundam, but he is just an ok story teller. I find his works have charm but far from perfect. They tend to be preachy and going around in circles most of the time, and in some cases, like with Reconguista in G, absolutely hard to make sense of. His scenes tend to jump all over the place making it hard to follow. Its like he makes these amazing scenes but doesnt really think about how to connect the said scenes.

Back then almost all anime were about giant machines, it was the peak of the super robot hype started by Mazinger Z. Tomino didn't even want to make a mecha show, he already had his fill with Daitarn 3 and Zambot 3, he just wanted to make an anime about war, but no super robot meant no sponsorship from toy companies, and so the Gundam was born, your generic, bright colored super robot, but with a big gun!

Back in 2001, when I was a 11 year old kid, I saw 0079 and 08th MS Team, and got action figures from the franchise. One toy I got, and I don't know how it was OK to get this, but it's awesome that it was, was a Zaku I that came with a special duel rocket launcher that specifically disperses poison gas to kill space colonists. It came with that accessory. I played with that toy. My little Micro Machine people in the Micro Machines Super Van City playset died a horrible death to that. My parents bought a war crime toy at my local K-Mart and I reenacted war crimes from Gundam in the weeks after 9/11 . . .

Bandai acquired the rights to manufacture plastic models, traditionally a cheaper licensing arrangement than toys. Clover had the die cast metal toy license from the show’s inception, and in fact was very influential on the show’s colorful, traditional Super Robot aesthetic. If it was up to Tomino, everything would have been drab a gritty looking, it was the sponsor (Clover, not Bandai) that demanded transforming and gattai gimmicks and “monster-of-the-week” tropes.

I had this exact same reaction when I watched Gundam a few years back (the tv series, not the movie). It blown my mind how advanced it was a a series back then. A powerful anti-war story with real crude scenes for a... giant robot anime in space made too many decades ago :) Gundam has more crude stories, and other spinoffs are pure comedy and auto-parody like G Gundam. It gave me a big lesson on how not to take anything from granted and don't look down on classics just because they are supposed to be the origin of genres and tropes, because... there is always a reason they are CLASSICS!

I know I'm a year late, but I highly recommend watching Turn A Gundam and After War Gundam X. After War is another Gundam show that also got cut short during its run, while Turn A was the first Gundam series Tomino had worked on since 1993. Also, Turn A is just a unique show when compared to the rest of the franchise as a whole. It's the only Gundam series (at the time of this comment being typed and posted) where you can see a Gundam being used as a wash line for drying clothes, a laundry machine for cleaning clothes, a transport for cows and farm equipment, a transport for nuclear warheads, and a destroyer of civilization. Sure, you can get the destroyer of civilization in other shows, but can you get it WITH all of those other uses? I think not!

Part of if the reason why i always recommend watching the show itself than the movie compilations. Although I don't dismiss them nor do i discourage people from watching them, I feel like both have completely different vibes from each other. The og show has more focus on the misadventures of the White Base whereas the compilation movies have more focus on the war itself. Both aren't wrong, but the show is more cohesive because of that reason. But because the movie HAD to cut a lot of content, it sometimes doesn't present its idas well enough and at times kinda makes it feel a little incoherent. While the show gives its characters a lot of time to develop,along with the war itself in the background. One of the major plot points i love about this show specifically is how it deicded to present itself and the story. It is a war drama, in the eyes of our protagonist Amuro Ray. It isn't surprising considering everyone already knows this fact, but instead of the war revolving around him, he is instead part of the war itself. And you see the whole plot unveils itself, and it creates depth to the world, making it feel larger, more nuanced, as opposed to feeling bare bones. It is a world that looks familiar, but not a world that you'd like to live in. It gives you a sense of peace and connection despite the chaos that's been happening on the story. And THAT'S what the show wants you to feel, it wants you to feel at home, because that's what the main characters are feeling, and are striving to acheive. The war backdrop was used as a metaphor to the hardships the White Base have faced, and it all converges into a beautiful conclusion near the end, where we finally find out the true nature of the war, how it started and why it happened in the first place. Suddenly we feel small, suddenly it felt like the world was bigger than it should be, but all the experiences and struggles we have faced makes us feel less insignificant. We grew up.

Seems like Gundam's relationship with merchandise was strained at the start.. the gunpla saved the franchise, without it it wouldn't be as big as it is now, but it's also the antithesis of the story itself. The story about how war changes people and how horrific it can be, but also buy the toys about war. But i think it's ok. Cuz without those gunpla sales, we wouldn't be able to get more stories about the horrors of war like war in the pocket

The attack on Abaoaqu was "glorified" because Zeon gased a colony and dropped it on Sydney having missed South America, massacred two Federation fleets, invaded the Earth, and was combing other space colonies for Federation supporters and war material with commando teams. The war had lasted about a year and a hell of a lot of people had died in it. Giren Zabi had killed his own father and a chunk of the Zeon military with it with a massive colony laser (death star basically) at that point to stop him negotiating a peace as Zeon was nearing exaustion. Solomon had fallen. Axis had run away seeing which way the wind was blowing. Pezun was preparing to surrender. Delaz fleet had fled seeing they would be turned over to the Federation. Kishiriya had killed Giren partly for revenge for her father and partly to enable her to take power and negotiate a surrender. Char used the confusion to kill her on her command ship's bridge after losing the Zeong & destroying the Gundam then stabbing Amuro in the arm. The idea that people just hated violence at that point and should have taken no side in the war is silly. The Federation, as stupid and corrupt as it was, had a chance to end the war and defang Side 3. Most spacenoids saw that as a good thing.

Gundam the Origin is in it's own timeline that's parallel to the main one, there's some major differences as it continues

What people are forgetting is the reason why the mechs in the original series are very colorful and you like isn’t because they had the toy line in mind, it’s because most mecha anime at the time had this well established trope.

yeah apparently tomino wanted them more realistic (which is why the zaku suits are green) but the toy company sponsoring this insisted that the main gundam be colorful to sell toys, which tomino didn't really give a shit about. if i re-edit this video im gonna talk about this point lol

@@WeebJail the toys have always been an afterthought. Nobody bought them when the show was airing. The plastic model kits sold afterwards is what got 0079 back on the air and skyrocketed its popularity. It was a network decision to make them colorful, not a toy merchandise deal decision. Sunrise wasn’t going to air it unless it was a safe bet, meaning it was familiar with what the target audience were already watching. The story was already a radical departure for the genre, a radical aesthetic change would have been too much for the network to agree with. Bandai didn’t purchase the rights until after it already failed on air.

Also i think, that yes war is hell, was is bad, violence should be last resort, and that is the idea, last resort, i always remember that episode of the smipsons when they were more or less good, that march was convincing bikers violence is bad, and she was succedeing, and homer comes out and attack the bikers and one of the bikers ask, he is using violence what should i do. Yes war is bad, and violence is bad, but what do you do when another country do something, i hate when said, in WW2 and even now in the war with Ukraine that country is neutral, how can you said is neutral if you are giving weapons to an enemy, or said that country is a peacfull one when is funding terrorist or doing shadow things to destabilize others, was is bad so we endure abuse. Gundam is a good step, but still too naive
