i like your interpretation of the story, but what i cant like nor accept of this anime is more or less what you said about 86. i cant accept the pedophilia and fanservice about CHILDREN shown as something SILLY. Him being a pedofile should be one of his biggest flaw he SHOULD be working on. That i could accept and like, but sadly the anime messes up big time in rudy's psychology, and once again useless empty fan service played with silly music in the background... the character writing in the show is extremely shallow in my opinion, wasted potential because the worldbuilding is VERY good! this comes from someone who loves character psychology in any media, and discussed this with an actual therapist lmao, doesnt mean im 100% right, but at least im not just hating on the anime.

Our war game kinda has issues. English or japanese, the gang is just separated and some aren't needed. I think one of the things with so many characters being alive and getting happy endings is because that is what Eren wanted. There are loads of layers for why Eren does what he does. One of the reasons he does what he does, that is brought up by Eren and everyone else again and again, is that he is doing it for the people he loves. It is made very clear that the group would have had no chance of beating Eren if Eren didn't actually want them to beat him. Eren is actively working against himself, and the power of Yirm, to ensure that the people he loves live long happy lives.

I think the show faded in popularity because a) Season 2/endless eight killed people's obsession with the show (although definitely an interesting directing exercise) b) never had a climax that was more than a muted emotional one and c) it was both clever and otaku bait, and rewatching it now the otaku bait aspects of it are just kind of lame
