I’m in NW Wisconsin and I heat my small rambler exclusively with wood I scrounge for, it’s easy here to find enough wood but I only use a full cord and a lot of scrap wood I collect throughout the year to heat the house. I just got a nice donation of logged red oak and hard maple from a construction company building a cell tower down the road, I’ll get about 6 full cords from it. Subbed.

In the 90s the oil change I worked for installed a waste oil heater. Worked mostly great the first year but had 3 major flaws: 1) once a week needed to drain water from the bottom of the holding tank (try getting rid of oil contaminated water), 2) the oil was preheated prior to consumption within the injection nozzle that would coke up (I reworked it by building a different mouse trap), 3) like an oil furnace it was ignited by a constant spark using great amounts of electricity. Owners still liked it as it lowered the use of the infer-red heater by 50%. Located 5 minutes north of Syracuse NY. I like the ducting from insert room to other parts of the house. For the garage you can create something with ducting from Lowe's or Home Depot.
@EverythingElliott3 күн бұрын
I can see those being an issue, and have experienced some of that on my old unit, but this new one has almost 1000 hours of run time on it with 0 problems. And I’ve only drained water out of the tank once. Helps when you are getting good oil.
@Falcon-eh8tq3 күн бұрын
I have seen a design where no continuous ignitions is required, a heated plate is placed inside the firebox, waste oil is added drop wise onto the heated plate, put fins on the plate to direct air then blast with blower to create a vortex, turn up the oil to keep the plate hot, it will sustain combustion. but the plate does need the energy to be heated to nearly red hot.

I enjoyed your video much, you are easy to listen to. Good content for any home owner. I watch many video's about alternate heating. One of the most interesting of late is "Sand Batteries". Looks like the waste oil burner is your most cost effective heater. Might be worth transferring some of the shop heat to your house. I am imagining a "Heater building" between your house and shop with a thermal Battery, "Sand" to capture and transfer the heat.
@EverythingElliott2 күн бұрын
I’ve read up a little on those sand batteries, they seem efficient for a small space, but I don’t think they would work well to transfer heat to a larger space such as a home. You also need a very efficient way to heat them Up.

Nice setup on home/shop heating. I heated for years with just wood. No excuses! you have the tractor to move the wood several times except the last move is manual. You say you burn a lot of wood so think about how long it take you to unload a tote of wood (x) all heating season. It's unacceptable for you not to have french doors to just set the wood inside and be done. I'm sure she wants you to do other things for her and this just takes more time away from accomplishing that. I have wanted to do something similar to you for years now. I work on huge generators for a living. some of these generators I get 110 gallons of gently used oil a day. I haven't decided if I want to build my own like (Karl's Off Road) of buy one from a company like Central Boilers Classic CL 4030, CL 5036 and CL 6048 which does wood/LPG/NG/oil. These Beckett oil burners can be easily converted to run on waste oil. They are pricey though! I could however heat my 2100 sq ft house and shop for essentially for free.
@EverythingElliott2 күн бұрын
The problem with those home made drip style stoves is they can’t be left unattended as they can run away if you’re not monitoring. You could convert a Beckett fuel oil burner, and that’s what I’d recommend if you’re not going to be present while it’s running.

So is it air assisted to the burner, its a common waste oil burner thing. I have about 5 county fair grounds i get used vegetable oil from. Its probably one of the most difficult things to run through a waste oil burner. Something to wach out for is engine oil blended with bio products, ive seen people have issues running that sorta oil. Veg oil is a flash point around 600F when its new from the store. For reference, D2 fuel is about 150F flash point. Pure biodiesel is around 250F . I find veg oil works best for long distance trips where your running for more then a hour down the road. As you need it heated to really run right.

PVC fill and vent pipe on the oil tank? Cheaper and quick and easy to install yes but not a good idea. Some builders tried that here in Michigan years ago and it was made illegal shortly in part because the PVC will melt in a fire but because of pipes breaking while filling. For a homeowner dumping fuel in from cans or pumping it in with and pickup transfer tank might never cause trouble but when a fuel truck shows up the weight of the hose and nozzle will snap off the pipes while pumping 60 GPM or more and makes quite a mess in just a couple seconds. I see your old fill pipe is steel outside the house from original but still.

You have to consider the heating differences though. So you’re cooling from 95 to let’s say 70 which is a difference of 25 degrees. Where as I’m heating from 0 degrees to 70 degrees which is 70 degrees. That’s a much larger temperature difference and would require A lot more energy. Things are just a little bit different up here in the north. I use a heat pump for AC in the summer where I average 90 degrees and bring it down to 70 And it works very well for that.

And I've tried that, but she does a terrible job...probably on purpose. Same as when she asks me to fold laundry, I just do it so poorly, she never asks me again.

Your wife should've listened to you about the double doors. If you become incapacitated physically for any reason during winter, who does the manual work?

I said that to her, her response "I'll just call noco and pay for home heating fuel"

Something is wrong with your boiler system if you are burning that much oil! That is crazy!
@EverythingElliott3 күн бұрын
Nope that’s the spec’d rating for my boiler, says it right on the side of the unit: .75-1 gallon per hour of run time.

That PVC on the oil tank fill and vent is a recipe for disaster. It should be 2" threaded black or galvanized.

The 200 gallons I dump into it per year at 8GPM...it wont be an issue. It doesn't get filled by a fuel truck at 30-50 gpm

Why aren't you using ULS Kerosene?
@EverythingElliott3 күн бұрын
Because it won’t run in my truck, tractor and excavator, well, it probably would…but not super healthy for those engines. I have one transfer tank and I pull fuel for all That stuff including my house out of it, more simple to keep 1 fuel type in it rather than constantly switching between fuels.
@jacktherailfan32643 күн бұрын
Why would anyone use kerosene that costs (depending on the region) 1 to 2 dollars EXTRA per gallon for less BTUs per gallon than heating oil in a boiler with a gun burner made to burn #2 fuel oil and #2 diesel?

I looked into it when I had my well worked on a couple years ago, because that company provides the install. They quoted me $60,000 and that’s just too much for me to even consider.
