Supposed to be the first event the recruits go through together to help build teamwork, while building trust in their NCO’s. The supposed reasoning behind the removal was that Shark Attacks were never an actual regulated part of the Army, they were instead created during a Draft period where the Drills needed to quickly weed out those who wouldn’t make it. When I got out of the Air Force, my biggest nightmare, was getting recalled back in, then having to go through basic again, to get back in shape. I left the AF as a Sgt, and having to put up with raw recruits, a half crazed TI, for six weeks, scared the hell out of me. I was at my 54th birthday party, smiling, grinning, knowing I'd reached the point that the military would no longer want me back, I could sleep nights without the nightmare of hearing a TI yelling at me. In basic, I thought Drill or Training Instructors were from another planet. They thought your ears were in your chest. Their watches a lot faster than mine, and the only way to get out from under a yelling TI...hope some other idiot did something worse and he got the TI's wrath. What made it worse, going for training, my electronics training would last a full year. At that time, you were in extended Basic for the entire time.

@@u.s.marine6430 For a eighteen year old city kid, never been out on his own, it was a shock to the system. You quickly adapt.
