The SC2 and Gaming X give the FTW3 a run for its money, making the FTW3 tough to justify at the price premium. It's still excellently engineered -- watch the full video for all details, or read the full review here: www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/2900-evga-1080-ti-ftw3-review-vs-sc2-gaming-x-xtreme-aorus

You should note somewhere that if you pre-ordered this card you got it for $750. Which is the same price as the SC2 is now. Mine came today finally and personally I think the build quality alone is worth the cost, not to mention the thinness. Obviously I'm biased now having made the investment, but I think my point still stands that the value proposition for this card isn't as bleak as you seem to suggest. Speaking for myself, I certainly am not suffering any buyer's remorse, especially for $750.

I wonder how likely we are to get a mod down the line to make better use of all that FTW3 engineering that's going mostly to waste.

Rin Chi he yeah I have 2 pre ordered also, though I upgraded my pre-order to the elite versions so still have a few weeks to wait, still at an equivalent £730 for the elite version each it's a nice saving over the full price of £829 per card, and only £30 more than a founder's.

I mostly agree, the higher priced cards with the technically better cooling are generally not about performance, but there is, at least on occasion, some difference in the variation of frame rates between the less expensive cards and those with higher priced cooling solutions. Of course we aren't really seeing that in the case of the AiB 1080Tis, most of which are "over-engineered" (EVGA just takes that to a new level :) ). Judging by the EVGA forums there was a lot of excitement for the 3-fan design, so that's reason enough for the FTW3. Me, I bought the SC2 largely because I'm over the "by the absolute best version" thing - and because I could get it a couple of weeks sooner.

Dusty That's the simplistic way of handling a cockup. Instead of trying to reason with people, they went off the reservation and also tossed ACX owners under the bus. From what I have seen, ACX owners are being penalized as much as $20- 50 on the resale market for EVGA's decision to not stand behind their product and do this spastic bit of over engineering, giving credence to a false narrative. PC gamers live on bad narratives to feed their fanboyism even between brands. I will think twice before buying EVGA again. They have engaged in clownass behavior.

You clearly haven't watched Buildzoid's PCB review on GN. It wasn't EVGA's fault that the ACX owner's cards have faulty stuff. It was their supplier's fault who did not do enough QC to ensure quality components and EVGA had no control over that.
@rin6521
@rin6521 7 жыл бұрын
I think he knows that. He is saying that releasing ICX was a knee-jerk reaction to the PR nightmare, and that they should have just told people to calm down instead of re-engineering the coolers, because now the people who have ACX are having a hard time selling them for as much. It's a silly argument, but that's what he's saying. It's tantamount to the old Titan X(p) owners throwing a temper tantrum because of the new Titan Xp release. I also find it strange that people fault EVGA for responding to the issue in a free market way, rather than blaming all the consumers who were needlessly freaking out about a few cards going pop. Companies are always going to improve thier products because they want to sell more stuff, they are going to release things when they feel it's the most profitable, and they could care less if you just bought the older model, it's a ridiculous exercise in solipsism to get all butt hurt about it.

ASUS customer support is too shit for me to risk this kind of money on thier hardware. That's the other thing never said in these reviews, EVGA's support is second to none amongst the AIBs. They really go out of thier way to take care of thier customers and it's never difficult to get a real person on the phone. ASUS is the complete opposite, a total nightmare to deal with if something goes wrong with your components.
@VanilloBumbleboo1981

I heard about EVGA's support being top tier, but since I'm german, I don't know if the same goes for customers here in my country, actually. There were some situations where I had to call Asus support and it was mostly a confident experience. So, given the case, the card had any issues, I'd send it back to the online store, where I bought it. I'm pretty easy-minded on that matter. As long as the warranty is valid, no big deal.

Interesting... My 1070 and 1080 FTW cards overclock better than my 1070 and 1080 SC cards did... but that could just be those cards, sample size is always a problem, you need a lot more than 1 or 2 cards to really test that... That being said, my 1080 FTW runs solid at 2.1GHz, my 1080 TI won't run at 2.0GHz without crashing... kinda disappointed at that...
@jodul6557

Tech Deals yeah. Every card is different. My GTX 1070 FTW will only go +300mhz before experiencing very small artifacting. Maybe it's just my monitor.
@GamersNexus
@GamersNexus 7 жыл бұрын
More cores and hardware to stabilize, lower clock. That's generally how it works. It's easier to get 1060s up to those higher frequencies than 1080 Tis. In fact, in OC competitions, 1060s tend to place higher than 1080-class cards. FTW vs. SC doesn't really impact anything WRT overclocking. It's not like they're pulling "good OC" chips off the line for FTW. The difference is baseline boosting performance as dictated by chip quality more so than by PCB/VRM quality. VRM/PCB quality obviously matters, but there's a limit as to how much it helps unless you're doing hard mods + LN2 OCing.

#AskSteve So I bought a 1070 SC model and also a 1070 FTW model. The SC would clock up to 2138 but would slowly drop and sit around high 1900's during long Heaven benches or gaming sessions. My FTW would only boost to max 2114 but can hold mid 2000's during long benches or testing. So does buying the higher end card give you higher sustained clocks due to better card construction and better components and cooling or still just silicon lottery? Thanks for the great videos always hit that like before I start watching.
@GamersNexus
@GamersNexus 7 жыл бұрын
That behavior leads me to believe it's more likely a thermal constraint you're bumping against in the long test sessions. You could try validating that by blasting fans at 80% and seeing if the same behavior emerges!

Really like the new thermocouple comparisons, really interesting to see a fair comparison across different cards. Have you considered implementing the same methodology but with the fans set to run at max speed at all times, to compare the maximum potential cooling of each card? As the stock profile of each card might be a source of variation? Or does running the cards under load pretty much guarantee the fan speed will be maxed out anyway?

Great review, in my case I do GPU rendering on 3ds max and already have 2 STRIX 1070's OC, and was planning on getting 2 1080 Ti's to complete my rig, ideally I wanted them to be strix as well but ASUS could not have a better idea than come out with a 2.5 slots card... so the profile for the card I'm looking for is: 2 slots, tall to be able to SLI for the casual gaming since the configuration on my mobo would put a high profile strix in between the 2 1080 ti's therefore an HB bridge would not be obstructed, also very good cooling in order to handle the heat generated from sandwiching all this cards together, so I was left with too little options, only this card and the ZOTAC amp edition.

I am glad I bought the SC2 direct from EVGA for just under £707 here in the U.K. rather than wait for the FTW3. It's a great card as is this one and I see why people might buy it; an extra fan for $30 and lower temperatures isn't a bad deal IMO. However, my SC2 overclocks well (2,000 MHz on the core and 12 GHz for the VRAM), temperatures are good (75 C or less for most games) and it is quiet. I'm very pleased with it, especially being able to run all my games maxed out at 2560x1440 at 60 fps, many with DSR @ 4K and/or with SSAA; it's a nice and noticeable boost over my previous 1080 FTW even if overall temperatures are a little higher. Great review by the way.

Hello, I have a question for the EVGA GTX 1080 TI FTW3 edition where you showed stock speeds benchmark on 4k resolution on Ghost Recon Wildlands getting around 50-59.3 fps. My question is what kind of processor are you using? I am using a I5 6600K (STOCK speed) and on 1080p resolution while playing Wildlands I am getting around 40-60 fps. Would love to know if I need to upgrade my processor to a I7-6700k or a I7-7700K or if I need to just overclock my processor in order to see better results. Thank you!

don't forget, that the FTW3 has 2x8Pin and the SC2 only 1x8Pin +1x6Pin....because this cards run so cool, the card is going to be limited by the power, so the +30W that the FTW offers could help overclocking

I guess the only main diff between SC2 and FTW3 would be the Ftw card has dual bios. Ftw draws 30w more power with a better power phase but that isnt a huge thing as the benches show. I guess if you like the 3 fan design better and want a dual bios pay the extra 30 bucks. I bet the SC black card is the best bang for your buck at $720. Great video Steve been waiting to see this reviewed.

Kerwin C A few years? Then no, these temp differences in the 1080ti cards are trivial. The only thing that will realistically reduce GPU lifetimes is overvoltage. And given the stable performance of these chips across the board, you wouldn't even need to increase the voltage. Pick whatever card appeals to you the most, or whatever brand you trust the most/has the best service.

congrats to EVGA! having the coolest card and still staying 2 slot size! I give them my respect and my business for things like this. it is just lazy engineering to make these massive heatsinks to try and get the edge on your competitor. especially manufacturers that produce performance motherboards that have the two slots for x16/x16 right next to each other and still come out with performance cards over 2 slots. shame on you! (MSI). egva for the win.

I have a EVGA NVIDIA GTX 1070 8GB, do you think it's worth the upgrade to the EVGA NVIDIA SC2 11GB? I recently bought the 1070 so I can return it and now that I'm paid again, I have enough to pay the extra for the SC2 11GB model. I mostly play WoW, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm. Occasionally I'll play Guild Wars 1 and 2. Elder Scrolls Online. And lately Mass Effect Andromeda, though haven't tried it out on 4k yet. I have a 55 4k tv that I plan to put it on in the following days. My processor is a 8 core AMD FX 8300 3.3 GHz if that info helps any. I have 20 GB of ram, planning to upgrade that to 32GB. Thanks and look forward to the reply! You seem very knowledgeable and look forward to the feedback!

2:28 By drilling holes, they actually *removed* surface area. Pre-drill surface area: 2πr² [r is radius of drilled hole] Post-drill surface area: 2πt [t is thickness of the heatsink fins] Unless t is really high, post-drill area is lower. So, let's say r=1.0mm and t=0.5mm (a conservative estimate), then pre-drill area is 6mm² and post-drill is 3mm²

Greater exposure to airflow was the intent of that very brief section of the video. The air moves laterally through the finstack by making this change.
@molecularentropy
@molecularentropy 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. It would indeed provide greater airflow, in spite of lowering the surface area.

I'm 100% ok with paying a little extra for the coolest out of the box card with most leeway for fan noise/temps. This way I can keep my clocks high(because of more thermal headroom), without much fluctuation. That and I like the looks of it, and don't really care about another $30 when I'm already spending $700+.
@rin6521
@rin6521 7 жыл бұрын
This^^ My FTW3 showed up today from EVGA and I'm definitely pleased with it. FPS aside, the other factors (size, thermals, build quality, aesthetics) make the extra $30 trivial, and a no brainer choice if you are looking for a 1080TI AIB.

Yea, fair enough. Got lucky too...was going to eat the tax from my Amazon pre order(was going to be over $900), but Newegg popped up and I jumped on it. Got it like 30 seconds before they ran dry. Saved quite a bit of dough. Bought myself some custom sleeved PSU cables with it to tidy up my PC before the FTW3 arrives.

Nice! I treated myself to a case upgrade with mine, got a Cosmos 2, which also showed up today :D Gonna love re-building tonight. Also, the more I think about it, the more this video urks me. Don't get me wrong, GN is one of my favorite channels, and my bias here is evident since I chose this card, but virtually no credit is given in this video to EVGA, who not only managed to make the coolest and fastest AIB card, but also kept it to a 2 slot profile! I think that deserves more than the repeated and semi-dismissive claim that it's needlessly overbuilt or over engineered.

I'm still torn on whether or not to buy this card, or wait for the SC2 hybrid, or just buy the SC now and throw my own water cooling on it... Currently have the 980ti water cooled by an H60 thanks to corsair's HG10. I feel like I would eventually will want to water cool it, or start off water cooled because the temps and noise is literally unbeatable...

why is the ref overclocked missing from the charts?
@evilqtip7098
@evilqtip7098 7 ай бұрын
I think they did that because in the past, when one fan failed, the card would overheat and stop working properly, so they decided to overkill the heat sinks, thermal pads and add another friend and make a much more bulky. In case any part fails, the others will compensate enough for the car to continue working over years. That my friend is a fantastic concept from a company and excellent work from engineers.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Gamers Nexus: Awesome, I am trying to decide between FTW3 and Strix OC. I have the $750 price for the FTW3 due to pre-order, but I don't like that it's the noisier of the high end cards. Jay reports the Strix can maintain 65C at very low noise levels. I like the depth in your reviews better though.
@ntomnia585
@ntomnia585 7 жыл бұрын
Low temps at low noise levels should be the benefit of a 2.5 slot card vs a 2 slot, so what Jay said makes sense. Trade-off of EVGA seems to be a little higher fan speed to maintain the same temps. At least we have choices.

The more I watch these, the more I'm glad I got a FE and watercooled it. I'm running 2088 megahertz at load and 11900+ (/2) on the memory. Overall more expensive than the FTW considering my waterblock (and backplate, should have kept the stock), but I'm happy with the results.
