Been trying to learn to repair GPUs myself and have found your videos to be incredibly helpful. I've made some expensive mistakes along the way, soldering mistakes and the like but my main stumbling block at the moment is being able to diagnose where faults lay and what parts need replacing. I'm finding that watching, and re-watching your videos is helping to slowly increase my understanding

Great video! One comment to other viewers "playing along at home" The original MOSFETs are from Fairchild, but he ONSemi ones linked in the description are compatible with it. (I think ONSemi renumbered the fairchild design after the merger). So if anyone is wondering why you replaced a fairchild MOSFET with an ONSemi one, that's the reason. The part is either the same or nearly identical. There are some other MOSFETs that have hte same pinout and similar characteristics that should also work, but finding them is left as an exercise to the reader. I though it's weird they used a mix of fairchild and AO for the VRM there.

You could have checked for continuity from each 12V rail to the input of the MOSFETs to determine which ones were connected to the shorted rail.
@jase1719733 жыл бұрын
they are in parallel so this unfortunately doesn't work
@nightfury36193 жыл бұрын
@@jase171973 The 12V rails are not directly linked to each other. They generally use load balancing circuits that separate each rail from the others. Unless all rails are shorted to ground, they should not be connected together. Edit: I wasn't saying you could figure out which MOSFET was shorted. I was saying you could narrow it down to just the 4 or so that are on that pcie connector.

Great video, informative. I have a similiar issue with my Gigabyte 1080 Ti, when both 8 pin PSU cables are attached, the PC won't start. Looking at the card as it's mounted in the case, the 8 pin connector on the left, when connected, trips the PSU, unplug that connector, the PC starts. Only when the right side 8 pin is connected will the PC start. There's obviously a short in the video card, curious if there is a fix, maybe replacing a component or the whole PCB.

Awesome videos! I've watched every one so far! I've got a 1060 6B and a short on the 3.3V PCIe rail. Would that be enough to kill a GPU?
@TechCemetery3 жыл бұрын
If the card has sent 3.3V to the GPU for an extended period of time it may have killed the GPU. Shorts on the 3.3V rail can be tricky since basically half the board uses 3.3V. Can you confirm that 3.3V doesn't travel through an inductor on one of the voltage rails?.
@kavjd64763 жыл бұрын
@@TechCemetery I've erred on the side of caution and have not plugged in to test yet. If there isn't 3.3V to GPU, I'll have to inject some voltage to find the short. Thanks for your help and keep up the informative videos!!

Thank you, very informative and clear. Do you recommend your multimeter? I'm looking to get one.
@TechCemetery3 жыл бұрын
I actually don't recommend the Aneng Q1. The screen makes it run out of battery very quickly, and it can be a little slow to beep when using diode/continuity mode which makes it not ideal for tracing what components connect to each other. I haven't used a lot of multimeters, but from the ones I've had, I'd recommend the Aneng AN8008.

Probably a dead MOSFET, and likely a dead GPU as well. Check the resistance of the High side gate pin (HSG) on the datasheet for your MOSFET, if it reads as 0 then take off that MOSFET.
