Hey man, you're a hell of a player... I have to thank you for recording a "real" demo that actually showcases the amp, too many gear demos are over produced and sound nothing like the actual product. I've been a Marshall Plexi guy for a couple of decades, my go-to 1987 is a beast of an amp and I was nowhere near being in the market for a new head.... until I saw your vid anyway... I watched your vid Sunday afternoon and ordered the 80w head an hour later.. It came today and all I can say is "HOLY S***" this thing is an a** kicker, I still love my Plexis but this thing is growing on me fast.. I used to run 2 1987's together... Hmm time to dig out more cables.. gonna be a long night. So THANK YOU, if I didn't come across your video I wouldn't have picked this gem up....

In my opinion the Iconic is the better buy. It sounds better for the music I do, and it also has an effects loop. Plus, it has true power switch where you can play it at a decently low volume. And still get a good sound. Versus Vox, you’ll have to c rank it.

Bought the ivory combo and it’s a beast. Best high gain combo out there in my humble opinion. Does the VH and Dokken tones on the green channel then chuck and OD and, optionally, an EQ in the loop and you have something that can definitely do baritone and extended range guitar work as well. It’s so fun to play through.

Nice to hear some decent VH and rock through the Iconic, instead of the chug-chug stuff everyone else is doing! The designer said the "burn" function gets the Ch2 gain closer to the Block letter 5150, compared to the non burn 5153 type gain. Or something like that! Also, the 5153's don't have the same tone structure - the Iconic is more like the older Peavey 5150's!

I’ve got this amp with the 5150 cab. I’ve since read lots of negative opinions about the cab speakers. Is it really worth trading in the cab for something else to get the best sound from the head?
@emartinezr Жыл бұрын
Not needed. Have to understand KZbin people mostly have some sort of "gear addiction" and will CONSTANTLY tinker with everything; searching or trying to solve for something which is usually either in their heads or easily solveable with a quick EQ/knob adjustment. Yeah the 5150 iii cabs are better than the Iconic cabs, but they're also way more expensive. The difference will be negligible and not categorically "better" or "worse". Just slightly different. Do you need that slight difference? 99% of the time No, you don't. Do you hear something wrong in your cab/speakers setup? I doubt it. But hey, if you enjoy trying different stuff and modifying equipment... go for it. But no, it's not necessary, and it's not always for the better.
@Naughtforeye10 ай бұрын
@@emartinezrWhole heartedly agree with your statement. Once I found the absolutely INSANE tone shaping abilities of having a 10-band EQ in the loop, let alone having something like one of those BOSS 7-band pedals that are modified to be guitar frequency specific hitting the front as well I mean the "tone chasing" is really over because you can dial in anything your heart or head desires lol. I wish more guitarists really understood and applied EQ pedals, and really heard just how damn powerful and awesome they are, even the cheap Beringher ones are an absolute weapon in a guitarists rig.
@meagainokay76733 ай бұрын
Short answer is NO. The long answer is I have the same as you and sounds killer. The 5150 Iconic cab was made for this amp so it's a great pairing. Great cleans too. I also have a 7 band eq that I don't even use with this setup as I don't need it. Very easy to dial in.

Contrary to what was said in this video, I do not think that the Iconic series was modeled after the current EVH 5150III series, as a more affordable version. I do think that the Iconic 5150 series is INDEED modeled after the original Peavey 5150 amplifier, which I think was inspired by a Soldano. Now yes... one could say that the current EVH 5150III was modeled after the Peavey 5150, which is kind of true, but the current 5150III has A LOT more modern sound and sounds considerably different than the old block letter Peavey. Looking at the current EVH 5150III, it is extremely tight and "nasal", having that "cocked wah wah sound". The Peavey and Iconic 5150 doesn't have that characteristic in it and are also slightly darker in nature. There are many indepth comparison videos of Iconic 5150 vs. Peavey 5150 "block letter" and while the amps are not identical in tone, it is clear that they do sounds very very similar.
