Nice comparison. One note is that EL34 power amp tubes have higher transconductance than 6L6’s, which translates to a bit higher gain. That’s why the Volume doesn’t match. And as someone else mentioned here, the bigger difference is in the Ch1 with OD which is a bit thicker on the attack than the 6L6. This isn’t as dramatic as some of the EL34 5150 III’s. And a reminder that the footswitch Boost adds an 8dB input boost even when the volume boost knob is down. So check that out✌️

The Iconic. el34 has become my fav amp ever.Into 4x12 cabs is especially good ..the sound..the playing feel. the in room response since the moment first fired it up has been impressive.The attack is spot on and very responsive to dif pickups . Am lil more old school & it reminds me of the Marshall i always wanted. It pairs so well with dif speakers. Recorded so well in a full song

Good video! I like those riffs and song too. I love how warm that EL34 version sounds. I knew right off the bat based on the power tube configuration of each how they would sound but listening to them back to back really highlighted the warmth of the EL34 and chill of the 6L6. I'd be happy with either. That being said I'd choose the EL34 if I had to pick just one :) And BTW I like how you just went into it with your 7 string in drop A on the red channel... no cleans in sight

This is a REALLY good video. You have great tone, and great counterpoint. When you played each amp individually, I absolutely felt the EL34 amp was the superior model. However when you put them in a mix, the 6L6 one just sounded way better with the other instruments. Much like an older 5150 or a Dual Rec, it adds higher highs and lower lows, making more room for the other instruments. You actually swayed me from the EL34 model to the 6L6. Nice job!

I definitely agree with the attack on the 6L6. For my style of playing i rely on that attack to be there for the chugs. and the EL34 has so super smooth sounding lead tones. I think ill have a place for both flavors!

After watching your video, my main takeaway is basicly this. TO ME, the EL34 has a more ear pleasing, "natural" and "warmer" tone, while the 6L6 sounds like a harsher and thinner sound, something that a young, inexperienced metal enthusiast would like. 6L6 has a grainy and overall fizzy undertone, that will most likely fatigue ones ears sooner or later.

According to James Brown, the tonal difference was on the green channel. Possibly test that channel?
@HighImpaktAudio3 ай бұрын
I did check the green channel when I wasn't filming and to me it did the same thing that the red channel did. It had that full warm tone. At least that's what I was hearing. Either way there was quite a difference in the voicing of the red channe EQ wisl that I showcased. I'm not sure if the green channel effects the red channel, but there was definitely a difference
@btnilc693 ай бұрын
Much respect to James Brown, but I do feel they left money on the table with this design, essentially replicating a tone that was not well received in the 50 watt EL 34 model...a fatter, flubbier version and calling it "warmer"...Definitely may have been beyond his control, in that regard. If they had gone away from that tonal choice, and created a more bright and tight, high mid focused M style channel, this amplifier would be incredibly popular, so much so to potentially cannibalize sales from their more expensive model(s), and arguably why that direction was not chosen. Again, just my opinion...

@jamesbrown7468 I bought both the EL34 and the 6L6 last Saturday. I set them both up next to my JCM 800 and I have to say, the EL34 gets pretty close to the JCM 800 tone on the green channel with overdrive on and drive set about 2. With a TS9 Tube Screamer in front of it with level dimed, tone at 12 o'clock and drive at 0. Eq Settings were Low at 8, mid 4, trebbile 8, resonance 2, Prescence 6. Kick in that TS9 and closed my eyes, and A-B back and fourth to my 2203 JCM 800 and sounds incredibly close On red channel, same eq settings and red channel drive at 2 with a Boss SD1 overdrive in front, drive at 0, tone at 12 o'clock and level dimed it has a killer tone for the heavvier stuff. I don't like the burn button, it is just way to much. I also running a CE5 Stero chorus, HOF Reverb, FlahBack2 delay and a EH 720 Looper in the effects loop and do not use the amp reverb. In front I am running Les Paul Custom Shop into a TU2 tunner, into Boss 200EQ to better shape the tone, into Morley Mark Tremonti Wah, then to MXR Phase 90, OC5 Octave, SD1, TS9 last in Chain is NS2 Noise gate. The EQ pedal allows you to refine the tone really well. After 5 days of having both, I settled on the EL34 and returned the 6L6. The El34 is just a little more reminiscent of the classic Marshall tone. A bit warmer, and not as harsh as the 6L6. If I was a hardcore metal player, then the 6L6 would have been my choice. For me, the EL34 is a winner. And I forgot to mention the clean channel. Same EQ settings, but I do have a dedicated eq channel on the boss EQ 200 just for clean that gives probably the best clean tone I have ever heard from any amp. I have a fender twin reverb, and a 1977 Roland Jazz Chorus 120 I usually A-B with my JCM 800 for cleans, and the tone I got out of the EL34 with the eq pedal, is surprisingly better. No need for me to lug multiple amps to the gig now. Being a diehard vintage amp snob, I was very reluctant to give this a try. But wow!! I am glad I did. The vintage stuff can stay at home now where it is safe, and this will now be my gigging amp. Less to haul around to achieve great tones all in one head versuses A-B ing 2 amps, two mics in front and two channels to dial in on front of house board. This is a win for me. Never thought I would say this, and immediatley hated it until I gave it a try. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. PS: I spent about 6 hours total, tone shapping with EQ 200 to each specific channel to achieve the tones I finally dig. TS9 on Green Channel with Overdrvive engaged, and SD1 for Red Channel no burn button. The burn will never be used. And one final tweak, I removed the front grill and took off the 5150 and EVH logo and put behind the grill. Looks a lot better estetically. Now it's a custom lol

Guys, FYI -- There is no difference in sound between 6L6 and EL34 tubes. The difference would be the circuitry of the amp.
@JohnWiku3 ай бұрын
The nincompoopery around power tube "sounds" is astonishing. These are clean power amps for how overbuilt they are, AND the tubes are biased stone COLD. All the differences we are hearing are the different tweaks done to the preamps between models. I would love that someone would slave one amp into the other, and vice versa, and y'all would have the proof the differences are all in the preamp.

There IS a tonal difference. 6L6's are less compressed, EL34's distort earlier. That sounds different.
@Linqua2112Ай бұрын
6l6 have higher headroom and el34 will distort especially lows earlier resulting in a significant tonal difference. Have you ever played the same amp direct swapping power tubes like Laney vh100r or rectifier series and personally observed the difference? Below saturation there may be negligible difference in a hi fi style amplifier but we are talking about high gain here

I've done a lot of research and own the 6L6. I've played the EL34 and I agree in the mix I think the 6L6 cut through a bit better. But in a band setting I feel like the EL34 would do a bit better. Actually thinking about getting the EL34 because it's got the better mids to help cut through a mix plus who knows if he didn't just set everything back to 12 o'clock when he recorded. We're thinking EL34 for lead guitar and 6L6 for rhythm but if it's better the. Other way we switch. Both are awesome amps
@brandonbryson3317Ай бұрын
@@micahpack7923 hard to say. You’d just have to buy each of them and try it out. el34 doesn’t necessarily = more mids. The circuit is far more important than the tube type. I’ve heard many say that the el34 is a darker and smoother sounding amp, which suggests it’s more low mid focused…which in my experience, don’t help as much with cutting in a band. It’s all about the high mids.
