You only lose 3dB of volume going from a 100 watt amp to a 50 watt amp. Go up from say a greenback with 97 dB sensitivity to a vintage 30 with a 100 dB sensitivity and the 50 watt will be as loud as 100 watts. Bit of a noob question, but can you get the same tone out of either amp at bedroom volumes? @TONEWARSgearshow2 жыл бұрын
Good question. These days, most amplifiers are built so that you can get a great tone at any volume. The only thing you're going to miss out on at low volumes is low end. Yes, they will sound better at performance volume but they will still sound decent at bedroom volumes. I hope this helps. By the way, I would highly recommend the 100 W because of all of the great features and the Easter eggs that are in it. It is such a great amp

Thanks! Yeah this video has been really helpful and has nudged me toward the 100 even though it's $$$. @Earth-Worm-Tim Жыл бұрын
Man I've been so conflicted but the 50W sounds much tighter and I'm diggin it! I agree that larger power amps have a higher dynamic range w.r.t. the frequency response, but in this case the 50W sounds better in a little jam room. If someone were to be using the amp for live shows I'd definitely go with the 100W due to the path fading of the sound waves propogating toward an audience. It would also be true to find that perfect spot where you'd hear constructive rather than destructive interference. Lastly, I realize KZbin attenuates the signal for "optimization" so we're not likely to hear what you hear. However, the 50W for my jam room/basement sounds heavenly. Comparable to walking in the house from work and hearing my wife with a few p*rn stars waiting on me to get home lolol. Again, maybe it's the YT algo, but I have to disagree with you here, the 100W sounds like it needs the OD, but the 50W sounds tight enough without it... 🤷♂ Love the channel Jared, and as always thanks for helping me make my mind bro 🤘

There are two things to consider: You are using a 2x12, for me the 2x12s are banned, they have less dynamics than the 4x12 a less three dimensional sound or less resonance. I use an oversize mesa 4x12 and in my opinion if you want to make good profiles you need a speaker like this. Surely if you don't play in the mix band and use a 2x12 the 100w has a more interesting sound, but live I noticed that the 50w makes it better especially if you have a 4x12 mesa which tends to be a little boomie already. Even in the mix of the band the 100w causes me a bit of trouble with eating too many frequencies. The ideal is to have both but in my opinion you should buy a 4x12 mesa.

The 100w's Presence control is literally off until it's at about 2 o'clock and the whole sweep happens after that. Not exaggerating. 100w Presence at noon and 0 sound the same. To get the 50w and 100w sounding similar Presence wise, set the 50w to noon and the 100w to AT LEAST 3 o'clock. Yes it's weird but EVH designed it that way. Both amps sound great. The 100w sounds thicker and the 50w seems maybe a little slinkier (in a good way) and scooped. Maybe even more articulate.

EVH amps are "dark" amps by nature to begin with. That said, I swapped the JJ 6L6's in my Stealth to Sovtek WXT+ 6L6's like Eddie used. Pretty noticeable difference. I also added a $35 Azor Boost pedal to the board, and it gave the mids and highs a snarl, and chords became much more crisp and clear. The 100w here sounds WAY too "muffled". I prefer the 50w any day.

I've learned they on the 100watt having the presence knob at 3:00 is key

@@TONEWARSgearshow I usually keep it scaled back between 2:00 and 3:00 on the 50w which seems optimal.

Yeh, I agree. The 100w sounds muffled for the entire video. The 50w just sounds more clear and better.

I guess it's a dark amp but I don't like dark amps and I love my stealth 50 and it's able to get loud and bright but it takes away from the killer tone. If I need more volume or headroom I just run line out of stealth into peavey 6534+ and bazooka!
@ragingskeptic9753 Жыл бұрын
@@AuntAlnico4 I eventually sold my 5150 III and bought a Laney IRT Ironheart 60. The tone is very similar, and the Laney is a bazooka in itself through my 4x12. I got the Laney for about $500 cheaper (desperate to sell), so that freed up cash for another guitar in all.

The 50W sounded better in all the cases/settings you tried. It's just a better tone. But likely, on a huge open air space, the 100W will probably sound better.

100 watts...? Overdrive...? Pfft. Whoever "needs" that clearly doesn't know what they are doing. Might as well play acoustic... Or worse.... BASS. Of course... I'm still chasing tone on my MT15. So.... I NEED this amp. 50 or 100. And while my small man syndrome is in full effect...I also need a matching 4X12 cab. Hahahaha Honestly though.....GREAT comparison. Even through KZbin compression and my ear buds, I can hear the difference. Well done. After it's all said and done...I'd be histerically happy with either. Thanks for all you do. ALL HAIL THE SHRED MASTER! 🤘🏾🤘🏾🎸🔥

Haha thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the episode. And you are correct, most people would be happy with either version of this amplifier. They are both amazing.

The 50 W is so much better. Not muddy and articulate in comparison with 100 W. 100 W version sounds like a bad simulation.
