Evicted After Wife Died, Now Homeless in Venice Beach

Simba (street name) met his wife fishing. I love that. Sadly, Simba's wife was very sick from complications with diabetes. She needed a kidney transplant. Simba's wife was on the transplant list at USC Medical Center, but while she was waiting for a donor, her health got worse.
The emotional stress of being her caregiver was hard enough; when his wife died, Simba became severely depressed. He started to self medicate with marijuana to help him sleep. This was four years ago, and people's views of marijuana were much different then. Today, it probably would not even be an issue, but Simba's landlord used his cannabis use to evict him.
Simba is homeless in Venice Beach, California. He's a gentle, kind man who should not be living on the streets in his senior years. Elderly homelessness is growing at alarming rates. Boomers are hitting 65 at 10,000 people a day, and many lost everything in the 2008 recession. The coronavirus pandemic is going to make things even worse.
Simba's first night homeless he slept on a bench at a Metrolink station. He woke up without his wife and best friend, and without a home. A first night homeless is something no one should experience.
Simba's story is powerful and heartbreaking. I appreciate his candor when I asked him about living homeless as a senior. For many of us growing older, incontinence - the loss of bladder control - is a common and often embarrassing problem. Now imagine living on the streets without bathrooms or privacy, or the ability to change into clean clothes. Elderly homelessness is a serious crisis, and we need you to help take action to end homelessness.

At the least he’s got issues with his mental health & likely physical issues as insomnia & incontinence were mentioned. Those things can prevent someone from working. Often they can’t access treatment for their medical & psychological issues; that combined with no housing and it becomes next to impossible to, “Get a job”.

I was homeless in Selby, north Yorkshire England for almost a year after my divorce. From Scotland so had nobody to help me except the salvation army cooking me a meal once a week and letting me charge my phone while I was eating. The worst thing was not being able to wash via shower or a bath, best part was my old Staffordshire bull terrier being by my side 24/7. She died in 2016 aged almost 23. Got a new staffie pup last year then adopted an old dog de Bordeaux this year 🤗. I hope he finds his happy place before the coming shit goes down for real in 2021.

I remember a sad video of a elderly homeless lady in a tent, who couldn't get to the toilet in time, when the weather was bad in the night, she had to let 2 adult men help clean her up! And clean her tent! How sad that she had to go through that! Hope shes doing ok! Thank god! You have a bathroom and privacy and safety!

I’d like to help but no way is ever provided to help these people individually, either through something like cash app/PayPal or a general GoFundMe where funds raised could be dispersed as needed. Even if you were willing to go to Cali, you could wander Venice Beach all day and never see him. So don’t feel bad if you have no funds to help because I have funds and can’t help either.

what a kind compassionate man Simba is, To listen to his life story and the emotion he conveys whilst telling it is both Heart breaking and Inspirational. To have watched your soul mate and beloved battle illness and then lose her has to be the hardest cruel episode someone could ever endure and yet Simba has a dignity and generosity of spirit that shines through. I am very sorry for this man. So, I pray to God for his comfort and for his financial needs to be met. Losing his wife is terrible. I lost my husband a few years ago. And now I lost jobs in my cleaning and driving business, and I am struggling to pay rent to my landlord, and I'm afraid of eviction. But, at least I have a little dog to keep me company. God forbid that I become homeless with my dog! Living in a car is bad! I'm glad at least his mother is alive! Both my mother and father died, so I am an orphan now!
