I think it’s wonderful to get updates while you’re in the RV and taking care of Apollo, I hope your first night in Pullman was lovely and hope to see more travels. That’s very interesting about the flow and how the lava is erupting away from the magma chamber but keep flowing back where the chamber is. It makes me think mother nature has a special plan for the blue lagoon, I think they should be surveying an area to rebuild somewhere safer

Actually the marketing folks at The Blue Lagoon should have already won an award for convincing people to swim in the effluent of a power plant with an active magma chamber directly beneath. I think most folks assume it's a natural spring. It's not.

Not really - The source of the power plant water is the same as what you refer to as a natural spring - it comes from hot steam water that has been bored to down in the ground. When the power plant taps into that water for power it has to release it - which form pools of water like in the Blue Lagoon. There is nothing that isn't natural about the content of the water itself, it came from the ground originally and did not have anything added to it. So yes, technically it is power plant waste water. But the actual water is 'natural' and not different content wise if it had bubbled up and formed a spring pool itself.

A serious thought Silki - another option regarding the subsidence is that whilst the ground is not lifting it could be because the magma chamber is full and the magma inflows from below match (or are slightly above) the outflow. So the ground level stays stable but the rate of outflow also remains stable…

Hi Silki hope you are adjusting to all the sleep deprivation. This only concerns my gut feelings sadly. As I posted on the Astrogeotech Site & yours before, my gut feeling was the same. The Lava could be moving underground, reaching cracks, seeping through to the actual chamber. Only the imagination can picture, the result of that union. I feel for our Fragile rock men, I hope they don't suffer health concerns from the gases or exhaustion. What heroes!!! 💯👏⭐

I myself was also wondering kind of WHEN is the stop sign for berm building. Because. Immagine a cross section, and many AAAAA (Berms, now larger each time), the magma has less and less room where to flow, (the remaining VVVVV between the AAA.. I am not a volcanologist, but just simple logis makes you conclude that, not having seen any of the lava tunnes HUGELY dumping lava somewhere, I concluded it must be going back down, given that there are also very few quakes.

The walls themselves don't really have limits if you build them out onto the lava: you are only dealing with 4-5m more each time as long as the fissure is far enough outside and they have succeeded every time so far. The only reason there was a breach in Svartsengi is because they didn't build high enough for what came in that way. If they don't want one in the lagoon area, they can simply build 2m taller next time. The budget for doing so though does and the amount of effort needed to truck an increasing amount material (longer perimeter as you move out from the original one) 5m higher each time also increases. One or two more eruptions like this is probably their "time to cut our losses" limit - the country will never recover the money they spent defending the area if this goes on for much longer.

This time they had enough time because the August eruption was far away from the blue lagoon. The May eruption had accumulated a large pool of lava near the mountain which managed to pass through lava tubes even though the eruption had stopped surprising everyone. This time there does not seem to be a problem because the fissure that was feeding lava to the west has stopped some days ago and is now cooling, at least on top and there is no lava pool. The one that is still active is heading to the south east away from the lagoon but may threaten the road from the east if it goes long enough. As to the material for building the berms they can take lava from the new lava as long as it cools enough especially near the edges allowing for deeper lava to cool. This whole scenario also depends on future eruptions, where the lava is going and how long it will take erupting, so there is a lot of unknowns.

@@amantedar123 All of which is ultimately limited by only one thing: how much money you are willing to spend on man-hours and equipment to get it done. Double the equipment, triple the staff to reduce overtime, then you can move twice as much material between eruptions for about twice the cost. Since it takes only about two weeks for the lava crust to solidify enough for traffic, they could deploy sprinklers on the lava field 300+m away from the wall (far enough to ensure they aren't cutting in the footing of future wall) to accelerate cooling, then skim material from the top to raise walls. Had they known they would be at it for 2+ years from the start, they might have invested in a conveyor system to bring material from wherever it is harvested from to the walls, faster and cheaper than individual truck loads and dumps. There are infinite solutions but finite money to implement them.

The existing lava carpets are a problem because being 1000 degrees or higher down just a half meter any new lava on them can run much further because they cool much more slowly than when new flows go onto old, cold lava beds. Bummer

Are there are there any materials with a melting point high enough to withstand the heat emitted from this liquid magma? Because it would be super awesome to create a giant chute that's mobile, like a huge concrete chute. Then you could use the same material to make forms and pour the liquid magma into them to build really cool structures, such as buildings or even homes made of solid basalt.

43 million cubic meters is 34,800 acre-feet. Average thickness of 16 feet means it covers 2,170 acres. Or average thickness of 5 meters is 8.6 square kilometers. 3.4 square miles or sections of land. Go to the Blue Lagoon, become a lobster or Ball Park frank!
