I just moved to the UK and they take work/life balance incredibly seriously. One of my coworkers was responding to Microsoft Teams messages while on his vacation, so my boss removed him from the chats to basically force him to sit back and take his mind off work. Usually they remind us that we don't need to be responding to any messages or emails if we're not on the clock, and Ive NEVER received nor sent an email on the weekend. I appreciate this company and the work culture very much.

It does seem to push the narrative that women have the obligation to always be perfect employees and perfect mothers somehow. That women, more than men, have obligations to sacrifice for their kids, while not addressing the pressure at work to prove that they are as good as any man. To be clear, I don't think this was intended, as I can see Dhar Man doing this same story with a father, but because that messaging already exists, this story doesn't land for me.

@@dawn8293 There can be a fine line between "pushing a narrative" and addressing genuine feelings though. Some women do feel that pressure. Although on the flipside, this woman had an unemployed househusband, so it flipped the stereotype of the man as breadwinner and one could argue that while we see her stress as unfortunate, we generally don't extend the same sympathy towards work-life balance to men. The idea of "having it all" is almost exclusively talked about as how we can better accommodate the work-life balance for women. When it comes to the presentation of supposed stereotypes, many can be spun whatever way you want.

I’m honestly so annoyed at chat for calling her daughter a “demon child” during the ER scene. The mom wasn’t in the wrong at all for what she did, but put yourself in her daughter’s shoes. Her mom has been absent for a large portion of her life, and as a 10 year old, she doesn’t completely understand the importance of work and the pressure her mom must have felt at the time. It’s not unreasonable for her to lash out, especially in such an overwhelming situation (breaking her arm). While yes, she’s not logically in the right, her emotions are still valid. Especially for a 10 year old.

Or don’t even answer. You have no obligation to tell them what you’re doing or where you’re going for your time off. Don’t bring your work laptop, don’t answer their calls. Using camping as an example you can easily justify it by saying there wasn’t any service. Not that one needs to justify taking their own PTO that was already approved. Or if you’re going to work on vacation advise your boss you will be adjusting your PTO to reflect the time you’re working on vacation. I did that a couple times. The first time I was on vacation (only two days) and boss wanted me to handle some accounts while away so I only used 1.5 days of time, the other time i had almost a week off and I straight up subtracted a whole day because it was a Saturday (we were only m-f) and this clown wanted me to handle some accounts WHILE HE WAS ENJOYING HIS SATURDAY. I’m not confrontational at all, so when I was asked about it I almost puked standing up for myself but NO. If I work, I get paid for it. I am NOT wasting my PTO bank if I’m not on vacation.

Jarvis trashing this kind of work culture is refreshing cus when I worked at Starbucks I had a store manager that would shove all the store running onto the staff and shift leads. He spent most of his time either on vacation or at other locations, but would get snippy if we wanted days off or wanted to change our availability. I was 18 when I worked there and he was having me work 6 day work weeks. The abuse of power is insanely real and it’s real icky to see mr. mann trivialize it like he does with most other serious topics.

I once requested Christmas Eve off months in advance, got approved, and then my boss accidentally forgot my request and scheduled me to work a shift that night. (This was when I was a waitress) He felt awful and both of us tried our best to get someone else to take the shift but everyone was busy, of course, and some even lied and said they were out of town despite posting stories on Snapchat of them in town and not even busy. As a disabled person I hate attitudes towards time off, my parents are extremely anti sick day and would constantly go on at me for taking them to the point I wasn't really better off for doing so because of the stress. Higher ups tend to think you're making excuses and still try to reach you constantly as if trying to catch you out and it's awful that in most cases you're an employee first, person second. In spite of the stigma sex work is the only good job I've had in that regard as I can take whatever time away that I need and turn my work phone off whenever necessary. I wish unhealthy work cultures weren't so ingrained in society but hey that's just me being lazy or whatever right 🙄

It's worse when you're young because things like arthritis and crackly joints are seen as "old people problems" :( I'm lucky that sex work is legal here and I'm pretty protected so it's safe for me, but it's sad it's pretty much a necessity because I can't at this time work a "normal" scheduled job (I have narcolepsy too, I don't really function before 2pm haha). It really is so toxic, and they're so angry that people could work from home now. Office work could be completely stopped, the huge buildings used to enslave people at a location to commit to only work tasks, could be used for housing our growing populations and other needed infrastructure. All office type work can be done at home on a computer and emailed to the boss, and it terrifies the corporations who depended on trapping you in a cold cubicle and beating the happiness out of you to "promote work ethic". They cannot stand the fact that you could go camping and still handle that Henderson Account and email the finished report while you're making s'mores with your family. No, that would be insanity wouldn't it? It gives you a sense of control over your life, and, God forbid, a sense of individuality and self importance. We can't have that now, it will destroy the fabric of capitalism. That's how they see it. We just had everyone work from home for 2 years and realize they prefer it, and corporations are fighting tooth and nail to keep offices open and full of automatons who miss their family.

It feels really disrespectful to say that the solution to bad working conditions is just to just start a new business because ethical businesses will make more money anyways. Ignoring the fact that starting your own business is super impractical, if ethical practices actually made more profits, we’d see a larger number of companies doing them. Most people can't afford to start a new business. Most companies take at least five years to start profiting and you'd have to be even busier when it's your own company. Unethical people make a lot of money. Honestly, that's why Dharr Mann is so cathartic. Good people get rewarded financially. I'm lucky to be in a good place with a great company right now. But some places are so toxic and there's no recourse for those people.

i'm really glad this video has sparked a discussion about workplace obligations, i have a story related to this topic. one of my family members recently took a lot of time off to care for a terminally ill loved one. but even while she was off, her work was contacting her about petty scenarios that came up between coworkers. not only was she dealing with the stress of caring for someone she loves who was not doing well, but was still getting roped into petty matters that didn't even concern her. unfortunately now we are grieving the loss of that person, so now she finally returned to work (while getting barely any time to grieve). the work-life balance (or lack thereof) desperately needs to change in the u.s, not only for the sake of my family members, but for everyone else who is just trying to live their lives.

last year i worked at a company where they referred to each other as their family. we were paid very little, for a lot of extra hours, and had to take vacations with the ceo, go get beers with him and his girlfriend (the vp, btw) whenever he'd say "hey, y'all wanna get a beer today after work?" and they literally had a thing called the "emotional health committee" to host games and stuff like that. i got fired because i'm mentally ill. we love self-awareness, don't we?

Re Unlimited PTO: In the military my dad had unlimited sick days and accruing PTO separate. He was up to 72 days of PTO at one point lol but i think that system is the best way. No pressure to come in sick bc you want to save PTO, and you have set # of PTO days so there's no weird social pressure not to take "too much."

I love to see this being talked about. I’ve definitely been taken advantage of in the work place (fast food specifically for 3 years). I was 17 at the time and still in school. My managers would often tell me that I had to prioritize work over school. They would schedule me 5pm-12:30am 4 days a week knowing that I had to be at school the next morning. I was also pregnant while I worked there. I went to work up until 2 days before I gave birth only because they kept calling me in and I needed the money tbh. After that, they tried to call me into work 10 DAYS after I gave birth while I was on maternity leave!! 10 FREAKING DAYS! I still can’t believe they would even try that. Over worked, underpaid, and under appreciated. That has been my experience.

I think it was France that passed a law a few years back that makes it illegal to contact employees in their off hours/vacation time/etc... with work matters. No emails, voicemails, phone calls, etc... When they are off the clock, they are legally protected from being constantly roped back into working off the clock or constantly available to work. I was amazed and wished that the US would do the same- that is kind of a huge step for something so simple that we should already have: the ability to have that work life balance, the ability to shut off.

it's so nice to hear jarvis voice these problems about many work places. I've had so many instances of jobs doing stuff like this to me. at my current job I got covid for the first time and was understandably not able to come in until I was negative again. when I got back they told me they took ALL my PTO without my permission cause I was sick and said I had no choice about it. I also had another job where they tried to make me come in on the day of my graduation when I had called it off months in advanced. I was also told I had to come in even though I had just gotten into a bad car accident earlier that day and was told that wasn't a valid excuse. in conclusion, I hate all the jobs I've had.
