@@madhokte This is just not true. An accent is simply a difference in pronunciations. Groups of people speaking a language separately from other groups also speaking it, will develop an accent from one another. Despite these being the same language. Dialect refers to pronunciations, grammar, vocabulary, and how the language gets regularly used. Like what would count as polite or not. A much deeper version of an accent which is simple pronunciation differences. An accent does not only exist when speaking a language with the rules of another. That's just completely false

Right? I'm not black, but it's the idea of any stereotype, especially a negative one, is somehow key to you. I'm a woman, but I tend towards the unemotional side - that doesn't make me less of a woman, nor does it mean being emotional is worse. I also speak like an innocent Christian white girl stereotype a lot of the time, but when I'm comfortable, I swear like a sailor, I'm an atheist, I work (and enjoy) a very corporate job, and I grew up in a pretty redneck style. The way someone sounds, or what they like, is a very poor way to identify someone - and while I understand that's essentially the premise of the show, but of all the stereotypes, it's gotta be such a negative one that convinced most of them.

it's genius bc it's showing that you don't know a person's race or background from looking at them. He was raised the black way and she was raised the white way, yet she is still black and he is still white. All the "questions" they asked were 100% cultural and therefore based on stereotypes (Koolaid and media consumption) so ofc he would always pass because he was "raised" black, tho it doesn't make him black just like it doesn't make her white. :)

You can be black and/or gay, and also privileged. I think it's kind of offensive to believe that a black person can never exist within a sphere of privilege. But they also voted dude out based on nothing lol. Jubilee videos are weird, but the guy at the end says you shouldn't stereotype black people but they all used stereotypes and incorrectly kept the only white guy in the group because of his accent and struggle story. Which is really sad. It feels like a Pygmalion effect. I wish people would stop expecting Rob's to be the "typical" black experience.
@scoutbane1651
@scoutbane1651 Жыл бұрын
I think the problem you're all having here is that being privileged isn't a straightup yes or no thing. That's why intersectionality exists. We acknowledge all axis' on which a person might be opressed and/or privileged. A white straight poor trans woman suffers from different types of opression than say a wealthy gay cis black guy. Etc. Wealth is probably the biggest privilege out of them all, but even the wealthiest trans woman is opressed, and being white might mean you're privileged in that respect but ooooh boy let me tell you, a white guy in a whole lot of debt is still probably faring worse off than a black billionaire. The types of struggles we go through, the societal opression we face, is very idiosyncretic. Stop trying to put people into a particular box (as mentioned in the video). The world isn't that simple. Individual factors of identity might mean you're "more privileged/opressed" but there is no objective threshold for when you "stop being privileged/opressed"
@littlered6340
@littlered6340 Жыл бұрын
@@scoutbane1651 I do think it's important to note that no one in the comments under the post said he wasn't also oppressed, so, aside from the top post, everyone here is in agreement that intersectionality exists. Wealth is privilege, minority status is underprivileged. Those are three (wealthy, black, gay) things we know about this individual and they all come together to form (part) of a whole person. So when people clarified that you can be both oppressed AND privileged [proportional to the other black men] by being gay and wealthy, they weren't saying there was a hard line, they're saying you can be multiple things at once. Which I agree with. Of course, I missed the bit where he actually said he was wealthy. I heard him mention his home life, but I am doing like 5 things at once right now so I probably just missed it.

i feel like eliminating Brevin was a microaggression, queer people of color are often treated as "less ethnic" because of their queerness. As a queer person of color i get that a lot from other people of my race and ethnicity

The funny thing about this episode and everything like it is it's another example of America being the most culturally influential or relevant country in the world. The continent of Africa exists yet the concept of "blackness", even as it's discussed or understood on a global level, is dictated by what some black Americans are like. I felt like this was going the way it did as soon as Rob opened his mouth, because the whole premise is rooted in half stereotype, half gut. And by that metric, Rob didn't sound or seem "white" but there weren't enough black dudes who didn't sound or seem "black" to trip things up. I fall on the "labeled an oreo my whole life" end of the spectrum because nothing about me is black to anyone except how I look lol They should have thrown a black person like me in there, tossed in a Brit like Adika because some folks are still lowkey flubbered by Euro accents of any kind coming out of a black (or half black) mouth. Maybe spring for a Carlton Banks. Not only would it have made everyone's guess harder, it would've made the point that we're not a monolith stronger. Whereas this just sort of reinforced the idea that most black folks are exactly what you think, so if one tiny thing deviates, they aren't. Even if they are. P.S. Love your videos even though I don't watch the tube as much in general or comment. Hope you each explode with subscribers, views, opportunities and cake.

I think part of it is the US being culturally influential, but I think the other part is that the US has their head so far up their ass they don't care to know that there is other types of people out there.

"The continent of Africa exists yet the concept of "blackness", even as it's discussed or understood on a global level, is dictated by what some black Americans are like." I mean I don't think that's as true as you think it is, if it is it's because by people that percieve black people as a monolith. The US has 20 million Asians but the US has no real influence in terms of Asian perception. Europe has a lot of African immigrants, Africa has a lot of Africans, places like Australia originally had black natives, so on, most of the world interacts with black people not defined by US culture.

its interesting bc the reality of this is a class distinction more so than one of race based off the the experiences they were all bonding over (like living in south central, struggling with money, maybe a single parent, ect.) and unfortunately in the us the reality is that poc are systematically disenfranchised and many poc are highly concentrated in impoverished areas through no fault of their own (obviously) but the lower class is also not a monolith so you get intersectionality based upon race ethnicity gender etc. my point is i feel like their bond with rob came from that. ofc hes never gonna understand living life as a black man even if they grew up down the block from eachother but same goes for a black man never being able to fully understand the struggles of a black woman -> intersectionality and what not idk i find it really interesting side note tho this was kinda fucked on the producers part i feel like they are contributing to a narrative 💀
