The basic explanation for it not being a direct sequel to the first is because they didn't have the rights to the first movie, so they had to redo the intro story. Also, my first introduction to this franchise was actually in an episode of the Canadian CGI TV series "Reboot" in which they made a parody of it.
@cosmiccat670828 күн бұрын
Sam Raimi didn't have the legal rights to the first film due to, I think, all the investments needed to make it. He also couldn't have his original composer from the first film. Consequently, he had to do a quick recap to introduce the reasons for Ash being in the cabin in the first place. It's only from the time you see Ash possessed, therefore, that the movie truly begins. It's such a great movie though, isn't it. It was fun seeing you enjoying it. On to the third one then, for Chandra anyway !😺 Oh, and Bruce really can flip his body around like that !

"Groovy." Fun Fact: Theatrical film debut of Kassie Wesley DePaiva. Movie Magic Fact: The eyeball swallowing shot was actually filmed in reverse. Smoking Effect Fact: The smoke that comes from the chainsaw is actually tobacco smoke. Sam Raimi rigged tubing to the back of the chainsaw, hid off-camera and blew cigarette smoke through the tube to create the effect. Tit-For-Tat Fact: A glove belonging to the Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) character can be seen hanging above the door of the tool shed when Ash (Bruce Campbell) carves his girlfriend's head with a chainsaw and when he's looking for the pages in the later cellar scenes. This was in response to the use of The Evil Dead (1981) in A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984). Not A Remake Fact: Often considered to be a remake of The Evil Dead (1981); however, this is not accurate. The rights to show scenes from the original could not be obtained to recap what happened, so the beginning was remade to explain how Ash (Bruce Campbell) got to the cabin. Several KZbinrs have been misled on this and have been tricked into watching this movie first.
@corvus197027 күн бұрын
Addendum: The use of "The Evil Dead" in "A Nightmare on Elm Street" was Wes Craven giving Rami a nod for the poster from "The Hills Have Eyes" showing up in the basement in "The Evil Dead."

I saw these movies out of order as well. This, Army, and then the first. My older brother didn't want to drive me home after school one day when I was a freshman and he was a senior back in 1990 or 91, so he asked me if I wanted to hang at his friend Matt's house. We watched this on vhs. I had seen bits and pieces of the opening on late-night cable, but it wasn't a T&A movie so I would move on, and I was not expecting it to go where it did. I saw the third one in the theater when I was a senior in high school and had to buy the first one on DVD to see it (with the necronomicon book of flesh case). I think this one is my favorite of the original three. I haven't seen the newer two. And then a few years later I learned the Deicide song Dead By Dawn was based on tis movie as I fell in love with death metal for a few decades...

Evil Dead 2 is a remake of the original story, and retcons several things (copyright issues prevented Raimi from using any footage from the first film). ED-2 had ten times the budget of ED-1, and was a much more polished production. Bruce Campbell and director Sam Raimi came up with the name that perfectly describes these movies - "Splatstick," which combines slapstick comedy and over-the-top gore.

My favorite poart about Evil Dead movies is that you think you know what you're getting when you go into one but then you really just have no idea 🤣. So many twists and turns in every one of these you don't know where you'll end up. I think the third is really good evidence of that xD. As far as Raimi movies, I have a few recommendations I think most folks would agree with: Drag Me To Hell The Quick and the Dead The Hudsucker Proxy The Spider-Man Trilogy I think those movies are kind of the biggest examples of his range and talents condensed into 5 or 6 movies, esp if you've seen the Evil Dead ones

Same Raimi loves the character The Shadow. He tried to get the rights and adapt a film version, but was denied continually. So instead he made his own character and released the 1990 film Darkman. He also directed the films The Quick and the Dead, A Simple Plan, and For Love of the Game. Those three are pretty different from his usual style but shows he has range with his directing style. Darkman, Drag me to Hell, and the three Raimi Spiderman films have a lot of the classic Raimi style to them. Even the 2013 movie Oz the Great and Powerful, has a few of the classic Raimi camera shots and scenes.

That was such a fun reaction to watch! I don't think I've ever seen anyone react to Evil Dead 2 and laugh as much as you two did. You definitely need to watch the Ash vs Evil Dead series after Army of Darkness. It takes everything that makes Evil Dead 2 great and puts it into an excellent TV series. It's relatively brief, too, with only three seasons of 10 episodes each. If you want to continue with Evil Dead, there was a 2013 remake that's actually quite good. Ash isn't in it, but that's the only real negative. Both Bruce Campbell and Sam Rami were involved in the production, which probably helped. If I'm not mistaken, they used all physical effects rather than relying on digital effects like many remakes do. There's also a more recent sequel with Evil Dead Rise, which is apparently the first step in establishing a connected Evil Dead "universe" which in intended to tie all of the existing movies, the TV series, and future films together more coherently.

I think you would enjoy the Hell out of it. Short episodes, very pulpy, all of the stuff that makes these three movies so good. I was so happy as an Evil Dead fan that we got that show. Also, just as a side bar, if you really want a good time, plug in the Evil Dead 2 DVD and listen to the commentary with Campbell, Raimi, Tapert and Nicotero. They are a HOOT.

This movie is the pinnacle of comedy/horror. Most movies in the limited genre lean more into the comedy or the horror, but this one is the perfect balance to me. It's legit scary and freaky in a lot of parts, then has you laughing at not-obvious jokes. If you guys ever get the chance, you NEED to see "Evil Dead: The Musical." You could even just listen to the music from it and get most of what's going on, having seen 1 & 2. But if you can, see it live, and sit in the "Splatter Zone" :)

What's really cool about this one is that if you look carefully in the background of the tool shed you can clearly see Freddy Kruegers glove hanging on the wall, then later, in Jason Goes to Hell The Final Friday, director Adam Marcus asked Sam Raimi if he could use the Necronomicon a.k.a. The Book of the Dead in his movie and he got it, lots of cool stuff in that movie, but this movie is an acid trip minus the acid, so cool.

It's not a remake per se. Because the beginning of the movie with just his girlfriend is meant to be a speedrun lite recap of the first movie, and from that point onwards it's PURELY a sequel where Ash is just STILL stuck at the cabin. The Evil Dead series doesn't take continuity SUPER seriously, partially because the rights keep trading hands from one company to the next, so they didn't have rights to footage from the previous movies, so they had to keep remaking stuff if they wanted to do a "flashback" or "recap" to get audiences up to speed. And every time they do a remake the details only ROUGHLY match (potentially to avoid some sort of legal issues?).

Finally, reactors who appreciate the slapstick, set pieces and overall brilliance of this movie!! Evil Dead 2 is definitely a comedy compared to the original which had a much lower budget but is scarier, in my opinion. Evil Dead III Army of Darkness is more or less a Fantasy/Adventure with some elements of horror. Sam Raimi wanted to approach the same themes in each entry but with different tones. For practical effects fans they're bliss to watch.

The green blood was an attempt to placate the MPAA so they could get an R rating. It didn't work. I remember an article in Fangoria magazine where someone who worked on the efects said their motto was "Slime's no crime". Ash's battle with the possessed Ed went on much longer. Ending in a scene where Ed's dismembered parts are flopping around like in a similar scene in the first film. There was a lot of stuff cut from the film. Including a flashback of Henrietta being possessed attempting to kill the father and Linda's head attacking Ash with a long snake-like tongue. Most of this footage has been lost and the only record of them is behinds the scenes puctures and video taken by the effects crew. I think some of that footage is on KZbin. Definitely watch the series Ash vs the Evil Dead. It stars Bruce Campbell and it's very much in the tone of Evil Dead 2. It's even more iver the top and outrageous than the movie. Also, as a pay cable series, it doesn't have to worry about ratings so anything goes. I know Raimi directs the first episode and maybe a couple more.

He also directed some episodes of the TV series Ash vs. The Evil Dead. His last film as director was Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Also (maybe) worth watching, because it's so silly (and was a huge failure), is Crimewave (1985).

I really really really recommend you guys watch Ash vs. Evil Dead. Fun, hilarious, dark, serious, punk rock n roll good time. Also, must have the stomach for it, just sayin ;) Fun Facts time: The Evil Dead franchise is in a weird place. The first one was always considered like a first draft. Kids making their first movie type stuff. BUT then in the 2015-18 tv show takes place in current time but it establishes the characters and events that took place in the first movie, no mention of his time travel nor characters from Evil Dead 2. Ted Raimi, Sam's younger brother, plays the deadite mother Henrietta. He has also been in a bunch of stuff for decades but also in Sam's other movies, like in Xena as Joxer, in the original Spider Man trilogy as Hoffman working at the Bugle. Recently he was the cop in the video game The Quarry. Sam's short film "Within The Woods" (which you can search for on KZbin)is a 1978 horror short film written, directed and produced by Sam Raimi. Raimi drew inspiration from his earlier short film Clockwork, deciding to produce a proof of concept horror film to help build the interest of potential investors. It has an even younger Bruce Campbell and Ellen Sandweiss(Cheryl Williams in Evil Dead) as the two protagonists and produced the film for $1,600. The film centers around demonic possession and mysterious forces originating from the woods. Raimi convinced a local theater manager to screen the film alongside The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which sparked minor interest. Initially a meagre success, the film screened well to test audiences and inspired a larger budget remake directed by Raimi, called The Evil Dead (1981). Several of the aesthetic qualities found in Within the Woods later defined Raimi's films. You can find Raimi's use of the 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 car in most of his films including Doctor Strange Universe Of Madness(It's shit, as the rest of phase 4 Marvel post Endgame, and the only cool parts are the little touches of Raimi horror that he managed to include in it instead of the studios letting him have control of the movie, he was just a "hired gun") There are lots of references of Evil Dead across the Spider Man movies: The evil "alter ego" is a frequent theme in the Evil Dead films. The scene of 'Norman Osborn' speaking to his 'evil' self in the mirror mimics the Evil Dead II when Ash is mocked by his mirror doppelgänger. Danny Hicks made his first film appearance in Evil Dead II as 'Jake', the redneck. If you watch closely you can find him amongst the subway passengers in Spider-Man 2 during the 'Doctor Octopus' battle sequence. The man who tries to steal a pizza slice from Peter in Spider-Man 2 is actually director Scott Spiegel who co-wrote Evil Dead II with Sam Raimi. He also made a cameo as 'Marine Cop' in the first Spider-Man film and played a 'deadite' in The Evil Dead. Bruce Campbell has appeared in all three Spider-Man films, and as a different character each time. The chainsaw and The Evil Dead franchise go hand in hand. It makes an appearance in Spider-Man 2 when 'Doctor Octopus' attacks the operating room. Raimi loves to use lots of shots that make one feel uneasy or queasy. Like sharp pointy objects closing in on eyeballs or first person view objects flying to somebody. Like the eyeball popping and flying into Bobby Jo's mouth. Something similar happens in Spider Man 2 when Otto Octavius's experiment fails and a piece of glass flies at his wife's face closing in on her eye. Raimi and Edgar Wright have similar dope techniques(Which i don't doubt Wright was heavily influenced by Raimi) that just make you wanna film everything like they do. Joel Coen(Oh Brother Where Art Thou, Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, No Country For Old Men) of the Coen brothers, also worked with Sam on the first Evil Dead. It was there that Joel learned a cheap but effective camera trick to raise the pulse of the audience: the shaky cam. The Coens use the shaky cam in Blood Simple and Raising Arizona, with memorable results. Raimi movies to watch: Darkman(1990) A Simple Plan(1998) Army Of Darkness(1992) The Quick And The Dead(1995) The Gift(2000)

I'll say Darkman and A Simple Plan are two very good Raimi films. Bubba Ho-Tep is an excellent Campbell film, though not directly a Raimi film, he did have some advice for the actual director on casting.

For more Sam Raimi the obvious are the Spider-Man movies, still one of the best movies of that character and of the comic book movie genre, before it went downhill with the MCU crap. I was going to suggest The Grudge - seeing as you have already seen The Ring - but turns out he was just a producer. I had always thought he had directed that movie. The actual director of the American remake , apparently, is the same of the Japanese original movies.

The opening and starting sequence is different from the first film because Sam rami and his team LOST THE FILM RIGHTS to the first film! So to be clever a few changes were made so although this is a sequel it’s also at the same time a bit of its own original take on the subject.
