A look back at 2013's "Evil Dead" remake/reboot/whatever by Fede Alvarez, looking at what led to its creation, its own unique spin on Sam Raimi's original approach to cabin in the woods horror, how it became the true fulfillment of grueling terror, and why it remains so unique in the franchise a decade later.

In the scene where Mia is telling her brother she absolutely needs to get out of there the actress has such a genuine look of terror that always stuck with me. You barley see characters in movies get that realistically scared.

No cap. That’s why I don’t get the hate or dislike of evil dead 2013. The acting in that movie alone especially by her was beyond phenomenal. I’m a pretty tough guy but if I ever got genuinely scared in general it would be just like how Mia expressed her fear.

@coldeed

They didn't do anything that the original did well. The original told me a story about five people that were genuinely friends being forced by an evil sadistic spirit to essentially deal with each other and what is both disturbing and traumatic. This is a silly cliche ghost story where it doesn't really seem like anyone gives a shit that they're all dropping like flies, aside from David trying to fix things with Mia. Which is really sad because I think the actors did a really good job trying to make the story work, but there's too many points in the movie where everyone in the cabin feels like a bunch of strangers that don't give two tiddly fucks about one and other because of how much time it wastes on the David and Mia drama. It was also too scared to go dark enough to force David to kill his sister, or vice versa, or even have someone else attempt to do that. To be honest how you make this a much more interesting movie to me is when you showed David's girlfriend or whatever the fuck she was sitting there carving turkey which was just far too obvious that she was going to cut herself with that damn thing to be scary actually take that tool and cut Mia's head off with it because that's literally just some bitch she don't fucking know iirc. But that would require her to be more of a character than David's girlfriend lol.

@@coldeed the original showed how Ash and Scotty were just trying to get laid with their girlfriends and dragged Cheryl along. The only genuine friends were probably Scotty and Ash lmao try again. Apart from Natalie, the others were long time friends and they emphasized the brother sister relationship w Mia and David. Ash didn’t seem to torn in the the following movies about what happened to his “best friend” and sister. The fact that you’re on here hating the movie when Bruce Campbell and Sam themselves were involved in the making shows how shallow and dense you are lmao. They specifically said this movie was created to be exactly what the original was meant to show. And they succeeded. Choke.

Something I particularly love about the 2013 remake is how they nailed the characters. If you look closely, they dress & act the same as their archetype counterparts in the 1981 original: You got the anxious sister in a red dress who gets possessed first, the brother who’s the last one standing wearing a blue shirt & sticking to a plan, his kind-hearted girlfriend in a white dress that takes “major head damage”, the blonde smart-ass in plaid who is responsible for unleashing the demons and dies after “resting”, and the blonde guy’s girlfriend in a warm color who’s the first to die. They didn’t need to pay *this* much attention to detail but they did, remaking the classic in every possible sense they could

If only they paid more attention to their own movie and made either of the dudes care about killing their love interests. Or didn't add stupid things like the first girl dead making dinosaur sounds while attacking the guy, glasses man reading a book out loud to himself like a total idiot, having that dude laugh are David kills his girl, having Mia actually have time to grow on the audience before she is just horrible behaved drug addict and then actual demon. Because lining up those things didn't make me like the characters. Eric (if that's his name) is the only one that seems to have natural reactions to anything. Most of the cast has no emotional continuity, and it's dumb that the girl that was too scared to hold a knife at Mia (who's practically a stranger to her) has the grit to saw her own fucking arm off minutes later. Or her better yet, not trying to fucking leave after Mia shoots her brother and the other guy bashes his gfs head in. Or David putting down his gf super easily but he just can't do it to Mia. Or Eric even giving a fuck what David thinks and not just torching the house himself. The other two only lack these issues by being either dead too quickly or possessed most of the movie. At least Eric had some personality, but most of the tension is killed by those 3 idiots twiddling their fucking thumbs in the cabin as shit gets worse around them.

One thing I love about this remake is that there's an actual reason they won't all leave when stuff starts happening. In the original, they all ignores Cheryl and called her crazy for no reason, even though she was clearly horrified and her clothes were ripped, only deciding last second "Hey we should take her to town" and by then it was too late. In the remake, Mia was in a detox session and her friends truly believed she was lying about seeing things and just wanted to leave to get drugs again, so they wouldn't take her until again, it was too late. It really makes the friend characters seem less like assholes who don't care about each other, and more like people who genuinely want to help their friend, by refusing to take them.

Your comment about the subtext of addiction, detox and relapse made me reconsider the 2013 version of the “tree rape” scene. The sequence in which Mia’s arm is tightly encircled by a vine is also a metaphor for a user tying off a vein (placing a tourniquet) when preparing to “shoot up.” There is perhaps a suggestion that this moment, in which the evil forest forces this act upon Mia, references a time when her addiction had compelled such behavior by her. Good observation; I had originally taken the addiction storyline more as a plot convenience to gather all the characters at a remote cabin, but I appreciate the idea of a dual narrative.

Mia (levy) was incredible and I really liked her and her brother as the dual protagonists. First act is perfect. Second act is brilliant and brutal. the third act flips everything on its head and now mia is the main focus and holy shit is it just perfect in it's insane visuals and cathartic chainsaw ending. Honestly this film could be studied in how to do a horror remake correctly. I also watched evil dead trilogy a lot as a kid. Now I'm one of the o.g. fans and I just wanted to not be as bad at keeping character consistency as it was. Like the way the movie shot, David's dealing with a lot of guilt and really not wanting to leave anyone behind, then he puts down and butchers his girlfriend without batting a fucking eye. It's almost like with the issues that they built the character to have that should have bothered him significantly more, and you probably say that he would but there's literally nothing in the movie about that. Or the fact that Eric has literally no reason not to just torch the fucking house himself and tell David to fuck himself rather than trying to talk David into it. Or that there's literally no reason David's girlfriend stays, after the other guy bashes in his girlfriend's head and his sister attempts to shoot him. It's also really stupid than once and she is too scared to hold a knife up to Mia, then magically has the balls to saw her own arm off. The characters in the movie act a lot more like props waiting to die for the next gore scene then actual people dealing with the shit in front of them. I like the original because each of the characters react based on the type of person they are. In the original Ash literally tries to do everything but fight and hurt his friends until he is literally the only one left. Scotty ends up fighting and having to kill his girlfriend and then immediately tries to bail out. Cheryl tries to leave immediately which they got right in this movie because Mia does pretty much the same thing and it comes across better in the remake imo. Linda gets hurt when they initially figure out what's going on, so she doesn't have a chance to really act poorly. I also like the evil a lot better in the old one. The fact that it recognized that Ash didn't want to hurt anybody and actively possessed everyone around him and mocked him for it, was great. That man's world was shattering around him and he had literal demons laughing at him as it was happening. In the remake they forced David to kill his girlfriend and the other character that's not possessed laughs about it in a way that really destroys the tone of the scene. But that's what actually makes Evil Dead scary to me, especially compared to the remake. In the remake, sure it's going to kill you violently. But in the original it's going to have fun with you first, and torture you like a kid ripping the legs off a bug. It wants to break your spirit first, and see exactly how far it can push you before it puts you down. It's like the difference between getting decapitated versus seeing how many holes something and cut into you before you give out. I think it's worse and far more scary.

You used Escape from Hellview, groovy, always happy to see people aware of the underrated CKY. I have a few issues with the 2013’s story, but over all it’s a fun and creative remake, plus it has Jane Levy, she’s such an under actress

Honestly when someone ask me what my favorite horror series/franchise is. The answer is always Evil Dead. The franchise ability to mash so many different genres and sub-genres through its many films and TV Series is what truly makes it so special. All while the story remain simple and not so complex. Making any rewatches more easy and accessible to its audiences. Personally, I had a cousin who would always rent Redbox movies, mostly horror titles, and we would sit at my grandmas house and watch 2-3 horror movies in one sitting. This is how I watched a lot of the paranormal activity’s, sinister, horror parodies, and so many more. Evil Dead (2013) was the one time we watched a movie and I verbally said to her “should I be watching this?”. As the moment of the branches going “inside” of Mia was something I haven’t seen before. I credit that cousin and Evil Dead (2013) as the jumping point of my love/ interest of horror films and stories. It was unlike anything my 12/13 year old mine had ever seen. It was so gory, raw, and void of any subtly. Since then I have gone through the decades of horror, watching anything I can get my hands on. Ironically, Evil Dead is the franchise I own the most merchandise of. Played the recent game for. Evil dead is the last horror franchise to push the bar and provide new comers or fans with something to appreciate in all its different styles. Now, the franchise is a way for Rami and Campbell to keep Evil Dead alive while providing new taste and visions from other directors. I love how 2013 and Rise have sought after young or unknown directors to shoot a new installment. Fede has absolutely blown up and become a writer, producer, and director of many horror titles. His name garners immediate interest to anything he does. With the reviews and talk surrounding the new film, it sounds like they might mimic the same thing we say 11 years ago.

Great video! Someone also brought a baby to my showing of Evil Dead 2013! I loved 2013 ED, it was cringe inducing (because of gore) and was a very fun reintroduction to that world. The entire franchise is amazing, and AoD is the best movie ever made.

This is a very good video, it made me want to rewatch Evil Dead 2013 and consider going to the movies tomorrow to watch the new one. I only watched this until min 17 so the ending is not totally spoiled, can´t remember all of it.

Having only recently watched all the movies and the scyfy series during lockdown, I really enjoyed this movie going back to the brutal serious tone of the first with better budget and effects. I wasn’t as big a fan of Army of Darkness’ goofy tone but I enjoyed it for what it was. I wish the reboot would’ve followed Raimi’s original trilogy plan, with Mia in a darker “Medieval Dead” then going to the future, maybe meeting up with Ash after the end of AvED, tying it all together. I’m excited for “Rise” but I’d also like to those storylines completed Edit: nvm I’m glad the franchise has all kinds of tones for different ppl, Army of Darkness is also great lmao

I absolutely loved this film. I recall seeing it on opening night in a packed theater. Everyone in there was so into it. That scene when she puts her hand in the chainsaw and says “ Feast on this MF’er” and used the chainsaw on the deadite had the whole audience standing up and cheering. It was like in Scream 2 when they are in the theater watching Stab. The Evil Dead series has something for a lot of horror fans. You want straight horror you have the OG and this remake. You want gore and humor you have Evil Dead 2, AOD and the tv series. The best part is that all of them are awesome. None of them are terrible.

This Flim is so underrated it’s insane. It hardly was even considered the best horror Flim of the year even before the months span Conjuring came out the same year. However, you can make an argument this was not a lot better than not only the OG conjuring but best horror flim of the decade.

How would you rank the Evil Dead films?
@UltimateCL
@UltimateCL Жыл бұрын
1 - Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn 2 - The Evil Dead 3 - Evil Dead (2013) 4 - Army of Darkness Although it's ranked like that, it doesn't mean I hate Army of Darkness, y'know. It's just that Army is way more of a comedy adventure flick, which isn't bad (it's very charming and entertaining, actually), but, for me, it surely missed a little bit more horror to spice it up. In that sense, Ash V.S. Evil Dead, as a whole, balanced the terror and the comedy in an almost perfect way, just like the second movie did. And man, am I excited for Evil Dead Rise! Really interested in knowing how the ranking's gonna be after watching it.

I love the Evil Dead series and I adore the 2013 version. I too was 12 when I saw The Evil Dead, I saw Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn first and a few months later I got the chance to watch The Evil Dead. I went in expecting it to be along the lines of Evil Dead II, boy was I wrong and scared senseless! I'm pumped for Evil Dead Rise.

I was a senior in high school when this movie came out. My friends and I were all huge fans of the originals, and horror in general. Seeing this movie in theaters was rough. Seeing all the gore and the way it was put together in the second act, combined with the surround sound of the theater was too intense, and completely inescapable. It was wild to say the least, and was one of the few theater going experiences that really stuck with me. It was an absolute thrill and I will always remember this remake, despite what others may think about it. It really rang true as a realizing of what the original was trying to do, but modernized.

Nice overview of this franchise, thank you. I was surprised by this _Evil Dead._ It is intense, it is dark, it is brutal, it is...beautiful. There are some shots in this movie that are so powerful and moving. Just a couple off the top of my head: Eric’s body slowly sinking into the water in the basement. Just gorgeous. Or the possessed Mia, wrapped in plastic, talking to David about their mother. The entire sequence of Mia crashing into the pond and the demon emerging from the mud was filmed so effectively. The camera puts us in the water with her, right at the surface, just like _Jaws_ so often does. But after I watch it, I feel like...like I was baptized through its blood and fire. Even though it’s just a cabin in a wood, it has the most apocalyptic climax. The end of the world has to start somewhere. For me, when the skies open and blood rains down and the cabin is burning and blood hangs in the air like a mist and the Abomination claws its way into the world, it felt like the beginning of the end of the world. Maybe I’m crazy, I don’t know.

Even though this reboot's not my cup of tea, I do appreciate fans giving it a ton of love. My heart goes out to Evil Dead 2013 having the scares and charm of the 1982 original, but then we get to the Starz series Ash Vs Evil Dead, a continuation of Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, and it gets good!

The best moment I remember from evil dead is the card scene where the heavily modulated demon voice says YOU WILL DIE. I've always found sound way more scarier than movies. I was absolutely terrified when I listened to the fog soundtrack (when i watched it, not so much lol.) It is why I love bands like skinny puppy so much because one of their shows is like watching this movie.

I'll admit that for me this remake is the greatest pure horror piece of Evil Dead. Much as I adore the more splat-stick nature of the series as a whole I often wondered what if it stuck with and refined its horror. This film answers that question in the best way possible.

I like the new “Go for NC-17, then lower it just a bit to be R” approach of Evil Dead. It is such an interesting turn around from what the originals were, and I think it seriously has a future as being that “super gory” horror franchise

It felt like I was taking crazy pills, the popular consensus was that this film was okay or even bad. This has always bewildered me, I've loved this film ever since seeing it in theaters. It was one of the first moving going experiences I had where I thought to myself "why does this feel like it was made specifically for me?!". Some of the best gore to ever be done in a mainstream horror film, and there's genuine terror that permeates the entire atmosphere. Passion for the genre and original film exude from every bleeding orifice and I will always hold this one close to my heart.

This movie and The Conjuring are the two modern horror movies that have genuinely stuck with me with Evil Dead being my favorite of the two. Ill never forget how uncomfortable and anxious I felt watching this in the theater, the gore horrified me with how it was all done with Natalie cutting her arm off with the electric knife genuinely making me feel sick in my stomach which was something a horror movie hadnt done in a while at the time. Such a shame that the a lot of people didnt like the film because Ash wasnt in it, its such an overlooked movie with an amazing finale that only made me want more. Evil Dead Rise seems like Im going to experience those feelings all over again and I cannot wait!
