it would be cool to have the eval bar on the side for these types of games so we can see not only when Evil Martin wakes up but also how close he is to waking up and how capable he is to "fight back" the advantage once he starts playing seriously

I think that this game is very educational on why so many games end in a draw at the highest level. If you didn't "start" with an additional piece, imagine going "yes, I am going to sacrifice a bishop for a pawn to open the position" without obvious positional advantage or a foreseen tactic.
@iwantcheckmateКүн бұрын
That's a good point.
@SacredCowStockyardsКүн бұрын
So FYI, in the last game I looked up the eval, and Martin had put HIMSELF at -6 by hanging his bishop. So you were gonna see Evil Martin independently of whether you took the free piece. That'll probably keep happening.
@yastreb.Күн бұрын
I'm not sure if the bot is actually programmed to turn evil due to its own blunders. At least it'd make more sense for it to only check for the -6 condition at the beginning of its own turns.
@iwantcheckmateКүн бұрын
That's a great point! I believe it only checks after my turn but we can check with wintrcat
@WesselBКүн бұрын
It should check the eval only at the start of blacks turn because otherwise yeah, due to min-max it will be -6 before white takes the turn.
@eragon7818 сағат бұрын
@@iwantcheckmate That would be the better way to do it yea. Only have him wake up after YOUR turn rather than at any point. This way you have more agency to try and influence when he switches.

Challenge idea: Play against Martin, but every turn one random square explodes. If your piece was on it, it's gone now. If your king explodes, you lose instantly. Martin's pieces are invulnerable to the explosions.
@TomARowly20 сағат бұрын
I don't think it should be random cos that's just luck based. Maybe every white piece which is touching a square that Martin's pawns are on gets blown up every move?

The optimal strategy would be to sacrifice your pieces and play with a disadvantage until the endgame. The computer cannot win if the board is simplified enough
@KroganCharrКүн бұрын
Yeah I was thinking along these lines too. Basically mirror his strategy of playing intentionally poorly at first, and keep an even but simplifying board. Only capture pieces when you're down material to not accidentally trip the evil. Then when the board is simplified enough, do a big blow, ideally a free queen or a pawn promotion, and then ride the advantage to victory.
@Laezar1Күн бұрын
the issue is that you might not notice a massive advantage in endgame and end up thinking you're still playing vs martin when actually the position was at a massive advantage because of a reason you didn't notice. Like say you have a complex forced pawn promotion it's going to be a massive advantage but the position will look equal, and then you make one slow move against evil martin and suddenly you lose all the advantage.

I once saw a "pokemon chess" which included several new mechanics into the game, but one of them was that when you go to capture a piece there is a chance you "critically miss" and you lose your turn instead, but also there is a chance you "critically hit" and gain a bonus turn after capturing. I wonder if there is some interesting strategy that could be used to mitigate that randomness and defeat a powerful bot

Strategy, especially as he turns to evil with less disadvantage, you should make not great moves and kind of set up in a bad position so if he hangs a free piece, you can take it with a chance of not going over the eval to trigger evil Martin. Also, you should do what you did with Martin Fish, but the eval to turn him to evil changes either every few moves or on every capture. You could also add in negatives so if he is Evil and winning past the eval, he would switch back to normal Martin. Or something like that. Just some ideas to think on.

9:31 how does bxa4 look in this position? I think it forces black taking back with bxa4 which gives you a free knight with Rxb6. Then after black goes Rb8, you get Ra-b1 which doubles your rooks on the b file. Or am I missing something big? Also sorry for the bad algebraic notation I hope you get what I mean
