so i loaded up the position and looked at what stockfish was sugesting and its straight up hallucinating, if u play the moves it says are winning for white it actually ends up evaluating them as loosing, my guess is that its taking some kind of shortcut where sacrificing queens is evaluated really badly at fist even if its winning and then when it actually does a better analysis it "realizes" its actually winning, idk its down right bizarre.

And change my play style. I have beaten up to an 1800 ELO bot and when I get time I am going to learn some openings and middle game techniques to improve.

I think the algorithm for suboptimal chess AI is to look at all identified move sequences and pick one below the optimal path this means the bot will always play optimally in the scope of "there is one path where we don't immediately die", but it makes the bot allergic to good moves when winning.

@ryanlind523921 сағат бұрын
It really does seem like Martin varies in quality from game to game and it's kinda interesting. Like one game he literally just gave up a queen on every move for no reason. And then another game every time you captured a queen he re-captured, whereas other games he was usually not re-capturing. Probably just random noise but as a programmer I can't help but think about how the logic is written

@gregoryshipley463717 сағат бұрын
I am fairly certain Martin's ability level is dynamic. He plays a little worse when he calculates that he is in a better position. As he gets more queens, he recognizes he needs to throw the game harder.
@corhydrae32384 сағат бұрын
I think it's a good idea to just crash pieces into his position and take as many queens as possible before they die. Martins moves are largely random from all I know, so him recapturing is more of an accident rather than a deliberate move. You can actually see how his tendency to recapture goes up if you capture with check, since the check forcefully prevents him from doing any of his nonsensical random moves.

I'm not an expert on chess engines, i don't even fully understand how they work, but I believe its something to do with "null-move heuristic". From what I understand, for speed, stockfish doesn't bother evaulating lines when it is winning by so much to the point that it concludes the best move for the opponent is actually to forefeit their right to move and play nothing. Essentially, because every move would make white's position worse, stockfish has completely ignored almost all moves and as a result it misevaluated the position
@Happy_Abe9 сағат бұрын
@@ryanmo I dont understand that because forfeiting your move is not a possible chess move, so it shouldn’t be a choice for it to chose, but interesting thanks for sharing

as a beginner, I can say that I personally use the rooks early, because a) it appears to be an "objectively bad" opening, which means other beginners who have looked into openings have not likely learned to punish it b) if its left unpunished i get some interesting early rook pins on their queen/king to help me take center control back c) beginners often develop their queen early, so if I get to develop a rook, I get to just line up with their queen til they undevelop it and I gain the tempo and most importantly d) the goal is to trade my rooks for their bishops early, because their lack of bishops midgame and an inability to develop their own rooks gives me some interesting positional advantages in the midgame. tldr its so bad its unexpected and therefore sometimes good xD also, I believe the "smart" variation is called the "banned gambit" and does have some interesting ideas.

So, having watched you play against Martin in various "challenges," played Martin myself, and this video, noticing the schizophrenic play patterns of Martin, I think the bot might actually be designed to play worse when he's up in material, more prone to completely random moves that are just pushing pieces around, leaving pieces hanging, etc. Because Martin seemed to play a lot better when he was down to 1 Queen then when he had several (still not great; this IS still Martin after all).
