Good informative older video. And his other ones as well! But note about sanding the points: use a fine grit 300 sandpaper give or take, and just dip a folded piece wet with alcohol and sand like he shows here so the points are CLEAN & DRY. Don’t touch them with fingers or any body oils; it can affect low idle/speed quality. Insures good consistent spark across the gap at all speeds. Not criticizing him here- his vids are great for noobs or anyone because of how he comes across to you in showing & demonstrating tuneups etc. He has a great vid on setting timing with a meter. Copy that and your motor will just sing.

Hi. Quick question. I took apart my Evinrude lightwin 3HP and noticed the insulation on the coils are all cracked. Does that mean coils are bad and I shouldn't even bother testing them? Or is it possible coils are still good?
@cajuncookone5 жыл бұрын
Even if it test ok, it needs to be replaced. The wires are exposed with insulation cracked. Trust me, change those coils.

Hi I for another quick question. I found my spark cable is bad. Can I buy just any spark wire from eBay or do I have to buy specific one for my Evinrude model?
@cajuncookone5 жыл бұрын
You can replace your spark plug with wire that has 7mm copper core. Do not use the carbon core automobile stuff. Alot of tractor supply places have 7mm copper core wire. Some auto supply places have 7mm copper core wire as well. Make sure it says copper core.

@@cajuncookone thanks so much! I've got the 7mm copper wire. How do I connect the wire to the coil? The cut off end of the wire, doesn't have a hole on it. Is there some kind of connection I need to get to stick the spike of the coil into the wire?
@cajuncookone5 жыл бұрын
@@aniyahudi There is a metal spike inside the coil hole where the coil body and spark plug wire meet. Look inside and you will see it. At the end of the sparkplug wire you see the copper core in the middle. Push the plug wire in the hole and turn and twist the plug wire clockwise as you advance it. It will go in about 3/8 to 1/2 inch. This is where the spike and plug wire make contact. Test the wire and coil as before to see if the coil's secondary winding and the spark plug wire are good to go. Remember you will get about 4 to 7 ohms of resistance roughly. Glad you are making progress.

@@cajuncookone ive turned my multimeter to 20k to check continuity. It shows me 10.55. is that wrong resistance? I've got these coils from Sierra for my 3HP Evinrude.
@davemercier8 жыл бұрын
With a digital multimeter, you test primary with continuity setting and it should be continuous. Test the secondary with 20k ohms setting. It should read at about 10250 ohms (10.25k ohms).
