Thanks from Australia! Great instructions. I’m gonna apply these principles to my 1972 Johnson 4hp.

Glad it helped out. Should be about the same with the exception of having to remove the high speed jet in the bowl on a 72

@@johnbright3229Hi again John. Thanks so much. My ‘72 Johnson 4hp is now running like a Swiss watch! Idles beautifully now. I had already rebuilt the ignition with new coils, points, leads plug caps etc, but just couldn’t get it running properly. I’m pretty certain I had a blockage in those carb passage ways. All good now though!

Thank you! I was able to rebuild my grandpa’s old 3hp. Evinrude Lightwin & put a 1953 engine back in the water! She purrs like a kitten now after 20 years in the barn. These old engines are not only works of art, they’re tough, & dependable if you take care of them.

Used a 20 some dollar oem rebuild kit I bought off of eBay from a Florida business! Saved lots! I was quoted $250-350 for carb rebuild! Granted I spent some on carb cleaner and compressed air can, but still...way ahead and I'm happy to know these skills, as a woman!

That's the best carb rebuild video I've seen on these antique motors, especially for us non-mechanic DIY guys. I would have never known about the Welsh plug and I think that is exactly why my slow speed knob wasn't doing anything until you showed me how to remove it and clear the slow speed passage. Much appreciated and I did subscribe to your very good channel. Do you have any video's on the lower unit for my Johnson jwl-17 3hp?

Very good, but according to the manual you are supposed to measure from carburetor housing to bottom of float, giving you between 1 1/8 and 1 5/8.. any comment on this? Doing mine, youtubers do it this way but manual says different... response would be appreciated, thanks..
@johnbright3229
@johnbright3229 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, those measurements sound about right. So feel free to use that method. After doing these for over 30 years I have found these motors aren't that touchy on float drop. So I just do them by eye. For someone with little experience I guess the measurement might be the way to go. Thanks again for watching !

I cleaned my carburator only part I didn't do is to remove the round cap. the motor starts with high rev but in slow rev, it just die, I can't seems to understand if the gaz is too rich or lean... it should be simple, but can't quite get it. I also try removing the spark plug and use a torch on it. I notice when the spark plug is hot, it seems to start easier.
@johnbright3229

You may have to remove the welch plug on top of carb, could be some debris in there causing this problem , or the passage from bottom of bowl to the top. You can see this with the bowl off, on one side of the bowl is a good size hole that goes from the side of bowl on up the side of upper carb. Also when you have the welch plug removed and the slow speed needle valve out you should be able to see light through the needle valve hole. Hope this helps, Good luck with you're project.

great video. If the slow speed needle is slightly deformed (curving slightly to one side) must it be replaced? I'm guessing the owner over-tightened it but is it re-usable?
@johnbright3229
@johnbright3229 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I would replace it. Even a slight grove around the point will make it difficult to get to idle correctly.
@jimwoodmansee
@jimwoodmansee 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnbright3229 Thanks, it is not a groove, it is a slight curve at the end almost curly but not quite. I tried rolling it gently but firmly on a piece of solid metal (the flywheel) and it mostly straightened out, not perfect but close.

Great video John, i have a Evinrude Fastwin 18HP that i'm in the process of rebuilding the carb, looks to be pretty much the same thing, regarding the packing it looks like the original manual calls for 2 packing with out the plastic washer before but my carb kit does come with the plastic washer and 3 packing for each needle, is ok to do the plastic washer and 3 packing like your video, your input is appreciated. Thanks Cesar
@johnbright3229
@johnbright3229 6 жыл бұрын

You can get them at Johnson or Evinrude dealership or places like marineengine.com Carb kit # 439071 OEM. Or 18-7043 Sierra. The OEM comes with the float, where Sierra does not. Spark plugs should be available at an auto parts store or on Amazon. Champion J6C or equivalent.

why my model doesn't have a slow speed needle valve. On the plate high speed needle valve says lean - rich. is that normal? newbie question...
@johnbright3229
@johnbright3229 4 жыл бұрын
The one on top is the slow speed idle mixture needle valve. The lean and rich are just to tell you which way to turn it to richen or lean out the idle mixture. Your model does not have an adjustable high speed needle valve , which would have been on the bottom of the plate. Your's should have a high speed fixed jet in the carburator bowl that is not adjustable.

My question If move the lever to start and pull the cord, will I see sparks on the spark plug( spark plug is remove and still plug to the cord? Thank you
@johnbright3229
@johnbright3229 4 жыл бұрын
It should have spark to the plug always. Could have bad points or coils if you have NO spark.
@lungchan1729
@lungchan1729 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnbright3229 I didn't test it correctly. I removed the spark plug from the engine and pulled the cord and there was of course no spark. Because it's not grounded... If the spark plug is touching the engine then I see spark from both spark plug. Which make sense every electrical circuit has to be close loop...
