Setting ignition timing with a timing fixture on Evinrude, Gale and Johnson motors. Using a timing fixtures is a little less cumbersome than using film gauge and it gets the timing spot on for better idling and running of the motor. This is how the pros do it.
I am not the maker of these timing fixtures, but I will gladly give you the information.

After watching your video I purchased the timing fixture and coil ring (used to set the driver coil) for my 1973 18hp Evinrude. It made setting the points easy and right on the money - one pull starts. And the price was reasonable and worth every cent. Thks

Wow! I've fought my '71 Fisherman many times and could never get the sight lines right in the middle. Now both are set so as it looks like I'm looking down rifle sights with the timing light on it! So much smoother, a lot less smoke, and the idle has never held at such a low rpm. Thanks for this great video! BTW, The point gap now is at about .035. A meaningless measurement for sure.

Great video, but you might have pointed out that torqueing the flywheel 40lbs is for a little 3hp. Would be different for larger motors with larger diameter cranks, flywheels and threads. However, that not withstanding, I am obliged that you went to the trouble of making this video available to the masses. It is a very good tutorial.

@cajuncookone
@cajuncookone 7 жыл бұрын
Not a simple question to to resolve with a simple quick answer. Multiple things could effect no spark or running. If the motor was running while the motor was submerged, then their is a possibility that your connection rods could damaged or bent. If it was dropped in and not running, then you need to get the flywheel off asap and dry everything under the flywheel and clean and set the points asap! You want to run your motor on 16:1 or 24:1 fuel mix, so you can properly lubricate a motor on the inside! If you look in the spark plug hole and their is signs of dirt or sand, then the powerhead will need to be taken apart, cleaned and new gaskets. The longer you wait to see about the motor the higher risk of damaging the inside of the powerhead with rust. PLEASE. go to www.aomci.org and sign up to gain access to ask a member portion. It is important that you do this right and i am stuck at work until past the weekend. I am a paid member of the AOMCI and can assure that there are a bunch of guys that can give you good information and guidance.

The way your setting the points is finr but how do you know if its going to .020 when they open fully?
@cajuncookone
@cajuncookone 7 жыл бұрын
Afternoon texasfarmboy1. When you are using a timing fixture as shown above, the gap of 0.020 is not necessary. The timing fixture as well as the timing marks on the magneto plate allow you to set the points at the precise time the points are to open to allow spark to be sent to the cylinder when the piston reaches its high point for combustion. Gapping the points at 0.020 does not factor at all in this method. Either your using a timing fixture or points gapping gauge. Now, if you are using a points gauge (points gap method), then the points gap of 0.020 at the high point of the points cam is necessary. So you would use one method or the other and not a combination of both. I hope this explanation answers your question.

Its a Johnson qd16 1955 10hp. I seen guys do fuel convertions using the briggs Stratton fuel pumps so thought i'd try it. Either the pump is bad or fuel lines to small or I don't have the timing right. i'm going to fix all these thing and then see where i'm at.

At the bottom of that carburetor, there should be a sintered or porous stone like fuel filter. Soak that filter in 1 part water and 1 part pinsol cleaner. Do not use chem dip or carburetor cleaner on that filter, because it can destroy that filter. Some hot water and pinesol in a bowl. Let it soak for couple of hours and use pressurized air to blow out the junk. Repeat soaking if necessary. A dirty filter can cause fuel delivery can cause a fuel delivery issue. Your fuel mixture should be 24 to 1 ratio. Don't let anyone tell you 40:1 or 50:1 is ok because of modern 2 cycle oil. That motor has bushings on the crankshaft to connection rods and not needle bearings.

I ordered one of these tools from Richard White but, it doesn't work for me. My issue is my 1957 18hp Evinrude Fastwins flywheel hash tags doesnt line up with the hash tags on the armature! No matter what I do, I cant get either top or bottom side even close! Also, when I try to do it with the flywheel on, the access hole in flywheel to adjust the points isn't at all close to the points! It's over the coil. The keyway is on the flywheel correctly but the hole is not over the points to make the adjustment!! I even bought the timing adjustment tool above, to see if that would work but, when the tool is lined up with the hashtags, the points are not on the thick part of the cam! I've removed it and examined it probably 18-20 times and I am left scratching my head in absolute bafflement! This was running 3 weeks ago but, rough so this was to replace points. So I finally just eyeballed each of the two sets of points foot (one at a time of course)on the thickest part of cam and set each to 20. But, the hash tags still don't match up! I haven't tried starting it yet as I am anxious it won't work and I will be stuck again! Any ideas???

If you are using the timing fixture, please do not try combining timing fixture method with the points gap method using a Field gauge. The gap of 0.020 does not apply to timing fixture method. Also make sure your points cam is not flipped upside down. The word "top" should be facing you or a dot should be visible. Go back and review the video and follow it to the letter. Access hole over the coil is normal when the timing marks are aligned because that's when the points are just beginning to open therefore the flywheel must rotate further to get to the wide open position where you can see the gap through the hole.
