Evinrude Outboard Motor Stuck in Gear

I created this video to show what my thought process is when tackling problems I want to fix myself. Sometimes I am successful, and sometimes I am not. But in the end, there is always a lesson to be learned.
Hopefully my first video in KZbin will be of some help to people that like to take matters into their own hands. Enjoy!

This is exactly what happened to my 1987 Evinrude 40 hp. Instead of a bolt, there was a roll pin in there, but the down rod had come off the pin, and moving the gear shift had no effect whatsoever. A week ago, I discovered a plastic bushing had worn/aged out on the other side of the horizontal shift linkage shaft that connects to the detent arm. I think in the course of installing that new bushing, I walked the cog arm pin off the down rod, but didn't realize it. Your video gave me clues about where to look for problems, thank you so much. You are a blessing for certain.

Glad I found this video found a guy willing to let go of a boat for 450 since it wont come out of gear. Hopefully it's a simple fix like this if not still a hell of a deal for a running boat with a minor problem

That happened to our evinrude motor at our cabin. I finally working again. When we out again. We put it in reverse and it went forward. Nutrual worked fine though. After pushing out, it everything worked fine.

I have an evinrude 55hp. Took boat out yesterday and before leaving the dock I put the boat in forward and nothing happened. Reverse nothing. As I raised the unit out of the water the propeller began to rotate. I dropped it back into the water but put it back it neutral and possibly reverse to slow the boat. After that could not get any rotation forward or reverse. Took a look today n all adjustment cables are moving everything up top. Finally got reverse but nothing forward. Will get in neutral. But nothing forward but a raved up engine . Please help

Were you able to check if the vertical link is moving up and down correctly as you're shifting it into forward and reverse? Before my outboard was stuck in gear, it would have issues getting it into forward gear but not in reverse. I can only assume that because the screw was loose in that joint, it was causing that problem. The joint I'm talking about is in 1:39 of this video. Check if the screw needs to be tightened there first. If this is not the problem, the next thing to look at would be a problem in the gear case (lower unit).

I have the same problem with my yamaha 15hp outboard but i have tried the same like you and I haven’t found something stuck there and i’m scared that i have to take off the lower part any suggestion or tips ?
