Hey Tom, a VERY big thank you for this very helpful video. I just bought the same engine with the same issue. I found a little hack that I cam up with that may also help anyone else with this issue. I decided to drill a small hole in the case that surrounds the gear that is stuck and flooded it with WD40 / Lubricate. and with some gentle taping and twisting it eventually came free. good part is now with the hole I can regularly spray some WD40 in there. thanks again mate

Thanks for posting I’ve got a 1977. 15 hp Johnson the twist grip would turn but the gear you knocked out would get a delayed action the shaft that goes into it with the square end is worn out so I’ll end up replacing the shaft and gear, bought my motor for $200 and have been going thru it new pull rope pinion gear on pull starter 2 new coils and power pack , rebuilt the carb , replaced a fuel line , 2 new plugs , new impeller kit , the motor to was setting for years in a shed , it runs but it couldn’t idle down because of the bad twist grip gear to adjust the idle adjustment on the side of the motor , once she’s running like new it’s getting a fresh coat of paint and hopefully it will out live me ! 😂

Another thankful viewer here! I couldn't figure out where, exactly, my binding issue was coming from since all the shafts and joints around that plug seemed free. I watched your video and then targeted straight after that thing. I went from stuck on the beach to driving around the bay in about an hour. THANKS!!!

Thank you so much! I have a motor that’s been sitting for years with this issue and it’s about to be fixed

alternatively if your bolt for tiller arm is rusted stuck, its still possible to dismantle this mechanism, you can remove the linkage gear by removing the throodle handle, then the linkage, then it frees up the space so you can remove the bushing/shaft.

Great video!Helped a lot trouble shooting the assembly ..seized up gear from corroded housing THANKS

good job buddy, those gears/bushings need to be lubricated frequently, especially in salt water

Thank you. Mine was equally corroded

Thanx much. I have a ‘71, 6 HP Johnson with the same problem. Hoping the same fix will work for me. 3:25 pm 7/15/24.

legendary little motors and will last generations if taken care of.,, for the low compression, bring the piston all the way to the top, spray SUPERZILLA in the cylinder, then put the plug back in and let it set a few days, it will clean the carbon out and raise the compression,, it frees up the rings, great stuff.

what is the function of the twist knob at 13:54? Super helpful video btw

It screws in and out to set the idle speed. It's position blocks the return of the throttle linkages and determine the minimum bottom end rpm by keeping the throttle partially open.

Hey I have a Johnson 7.5 looks very similar I was wondering if you could show the safety pin system ( to keep the motor upright) because I can’t seem to get it working
@randy1ization9 ай бұрын
you can use a steering wheel puller rented from auto zone to pull the flywheel

My handle spun off the main gear trying to open the throttle. How hard is it gonna be to get the gear where it should be with a new handle

Whats numbers did you get for the compression test? Can you also do a video on a link and sync?
@TomsMechanicalVideography3 жыл бұрын
If I remember right, I got 70PSI for both cylinders cold. I don't think I can do a link-&-sync on this outboard. I'm not familiar with the process but I believe it's for outboards with multiple carburetors. This one only has 1.

So did it fix the issue? Mine is doing the same thing. I was about to tear into the linkage and try and figure it out.
@TomsMechanicalVideography3 жыл бұрын
Yes. I have easy turning, full range of motion on my tiller handle now.

@@doneagan2094 I did not replace any components for this fix. I was luckily able to just disassemble, clean and regrease the components, smooth the corroded bearing surfaces, and reassemble. Replacement parts can be found on several websites, such as Crowley Marine, ebay, and amazon. Crowley has a great annotated factory diagram that will get you a name and part number for almost every part on the motor. The below link is their page that includes the parts in the tiller linkage mechanism. If you want to get cheaper aftermarket parts or if Crowley is out of stock, you can then search for that part number on ebay/amazon to see options for other aftermarket brands. www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/parts/41002.cfm?mdl=GJGDFT
