With disassembly the ARP studs could have rotated with the nuts. Not decking the engine or even checking for warping was definitely the problem, and you may upgrade to a L19 of +625 headbolts kit as the 4G63 is notorious for blowing gaskets. And with that small frame turbo you will produce more cilinder pressure as with a larger turbo. Don't read the comments to much, I love what you're doing! Keep it going. PS: would appriciate that you guys would do a rebuild yourself so people can learn it's possible to fix a screwup and not have to resort to a expensive alternative. 👍🏼

Your statement about turbo pressures is unqualified and dead wrong. 20psi is 20psi... and VE will determine the power made with that number. Also, 4G63s are notorious for blowing head gaskets... just like EVERY OTHER popular turbo’d engine platform(sr20, ej20, h22a, b series, etc..) minus maybe Honda’s bullet proof K series. This is simply due to the fact that it’s a popular engine(the more people that build an engine, the more they’re gonna blow up, because it’s actually hard to build a solid reliable turbo engine, there’s more to it than throwing money at them). And that’s only due to the fact that the cars they came in were/are popular. Engines become popular because of cars, not because they are good engines. A properly tuned engine with a turbo can make whatever power you want, with the right mods. And ones that come factory turboed just need less mods, that’s all. But, poor tuning ie. too much timing, not enough fuel... will cause higher cylinder pressures if those conditions cause preignition, not the “frame” of the turbo. Turbo size simply changes how much air is pumped into the engine and when. It has no influence on the actual combustion event itself.
@charlesschwab7651
@charlesschwab7651 3 жыл бұрын
plumberman19 some of your statement seems hyperbolic and exaggerated. Some engines require such extensive modification to make big power turbo or otherwise that it can’t really even be considered the same engine. And some engines are popular because of the cars they’re in but some of them are extremely popular because they can make massive power and they can do it easily. 2Jz and LS platform comes to mind immediately. Probably became popular due to the corvette and Supra but I would venture to guess there are more cars with 2Jzs and LS in motor sports right now than there are corvettes and Supra’s that function at all. Just be careful coming in with hard bold statements like that when criticizing someone online. Most of the time you come across as a jerk even if you mean well. There are ways to say things in a respectful manner that still get your point across.

Not to be negative, but maybe the Title should be updated from STI killer to EVO killer! I have argued this with many enthusiasts, I see as many if not more EVO failures as any other car and esp Subies! When you modify, you cant cut corners, always deck, tear that right down, don’t just slap that stock gasket back on and hope for the best, it will def crash and burn, for me you are sharing experiences, nothing wrong with that, just learn from it..show the right steps next time, so we all learn from it and what’s the right way going forward, save others the same pain, Look forward to the next vid. 🤘

I know you guys don’t want to “play the blame game” and hurt someone’s feelings, but that damage has pre-ignition written ALL OVER IT, the evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of PI(Which you can’t hear with knock headphones btw) also, the video showing sparks flying, that is evidence of burning metal or pieces of carbon, not fuel. There are no sparks with normal combustion of fuel. This head was LIFTED, not leaked from poor mating surfaces(lack of decking) wish you guys would’ve though, which would’ve further proven my point. People often over look the fact that PI causes enormous cylinder pressures, well over your expected pressures seen with 30 40 even 50psi of boost. The head was not lifted from 20 psi of boost, just ain’t gonna happen with your ARPs and a proper torque, which I believe you guys did. Also, as far as deck surfaces, there is a good margin of error that you can get away with until VERY high performance levels. You might get a bad seal and pressurize your coolant system, and maybe even a small combustion leak, but you’re not going to lift the head due to poor mating surfaces. Lifting only happens due to improper head bolt torque or excessively high cylinder pressures, that’s it. I’m sorry guys, this sucks! Most of us that have built turbo engines have been there, I know I have. And with that pretty KA24DE-“T”😉 in my profile pic. Rebuilt it twice. Once because I turbo’d it with a stock short block and got greedy with power. And the other, because of bad tuning(my fault).
@ReubenHorner
@ReubenHorner 3 жыл бұрын
I was under the impression that pre ignition was very hard to have happen unless you have a super small turbo like the modern cars have. Seems like a detonation issue to me but I'd like the pros to speak up (Andre from HPA)
@plumberman19
@plumberman19 3 жыл бұрын
The lifting of the head would suggest pre ignition vs knock. Detonation doesn’t increase the pressures like PI does. The size of the turbo hasn’t much influence, if any at all, on propensity for preignition. PI is when the explosion happens way before you want it to which causes huge pressures. Detonation is when explosions happen after spark but in other parts of the combustion chamber which far less destructive, that’s why you can have “ping” or “knock” and the motor lives to tell about it lol. Not to say that detonation can’t grenade a motor, but it generally just destroys pistons and their ring lands. I’ve built multiple turbo engines and tuned them myself(mostly AEM and megasquirt), I’ve failed at it and been successful at it. I may not be a professional, but know enough to know what I see in this motor.

@plumberman19
@plumberman19 3 жыл бұрын
lohpezfan62 unfortunately it would be the tuner. Sasha knows what he is doing, but we all make mistakes. Of course you can say, “well Pete didn’t install EGT(exhaust gas temperature) sensors” so it’s his fault for not installing safety features. EGT sensors would have shown the adverse conditions to the tuner and the ECU and very well might have prevented what happened, yes, but the tuner knows, or at least should know, the constraints of the motor he’s tuning, for example.. We don’t have this feature, or we do, we’re using this fuel, the bottom end is built, or it isn’t, it has upgraded head studs or it doesn’t etc... these things help him make the decision to set fuel trims, boost levels, and timing at certain levels. Good tuners like Sasha know these things, which are generally universal and can apply to most motors they will ever come across. Sorry, I’m long winded if you couldn’t tell🤣

Thanks for reading my comment. When I noted appropriate sensors I was referring to a coolant pressure sensor, not just the knock sensor. Like you said, in hindsight, it’s easy to pin point helpful things which could have prevented the failure. However, with existing reservations surrounding the ability for the engine to keep the integrity of the combustion chamber’s sealing, maybe monitoring the behavior of the pressure buildup within the coolant system would have turned a light on in an otherwise dark room? Even setting up an engine limiter protection strategy to limit the pending doom of such instances. Please allow me to wish you all the best moving things forward in a positive direction.
@oyurcha1

You make a good point about monitoring coolant pressure. I wonder if that option was available with the standalone that they had installed in the car.
@sardengineering
@sardengineering 3 жыл бұрын
oyurcha1 the Link plugin ecu they’re using has two expansion loom ports, this is where the spare inputs and outputs are terminated. On the number two expansion loom connection there are 4 spare analog input channels, An Volt 6 through 10. Within the software there are two general purpose engine protection limiters. In the event that the engine protection limiters were used for what ever, you still had a general purpose trim offset table which will allow you to drastically reduce boost pressure by applying a negative percentage to the wastegate duty cycle table; on this 3D table you would set the axis as engine speed by an incremental coolant pressure measurement. It takes time to get these strategies to work in the favor of the engine’s specific operational conditions, sometimes the correct sensitivity for it to be effective will require a bit of attention; but it’s definitely a possibility. I’m not sharing this to point fingers at whom ever, I’m sharing this in hopes that these mistakes can be avoid by anyone using a modern engine management solution.

It's ridiculous to me how many people criticize in the comments for stuff like this. I for one enjoy watching you regardless of the mistakes, and you learning from them. I watch to see your journey, not for you guys to do everything perfectly right every time. That's not reality. Plenty of professionals make mistakes on a regular basis. Can't tell you how many times I've taken my car to "professional" shops and ended up just wishing I would have at least tried to do it myself and saved the myself the hassle of paying someone else to make mistakes for me. It's okay something went wrong, it happens to the best of em. Keep truckin guys.

Love the content guys as always. Looking at the cylinder damage and the way that gasket blew I have only seen that with a tune that was too hot, knock or high EGT’s. The deck likely contributed to the head gasket blowing but the scored cylinders and piston damage it was going to happen fresh deck or not. Keep it up guys your doing great! Showing failures like this is good, some would have never even shown it or spoken about it.

It's easy to throw dirt when you're not the one getting hit in the face. Thank you for being real and showing what can happen. I'd rather learn from a mistake than try to hide a failure, trying to make myself look better on the internets... Looking forward to the battle!
