lets start with The Basics of the USDM evo 8/9 headlights
All evo 8 and 9 headlights have halogen high beam bulbs. However, for low beams, many evo’s came with High Intensity Discharge bulbs, also known as HID’s. The high beams are located in the middle of headlight, while the low beams on the outter most part of the light. And if you have foglights, they are on the inner most part of the light.
So, are my headlights HID?
If you have a 2003 evo, yes HID headlights came standard on all 03 models. If you have a 2004 evo, you have probably have HID headlights, unless you have an RS trim. All RS trim evo 8’s & 9’s do not have HID headlights. If you have a 2005 evo 8 or a 2006 evo 9, you only have HID headlights if you have the MR, SSL or SE trim. The RS trim and the base trim (also known as GSR) came with the standard Halogen Bulbs. Side note, the SE trim was only available in the evo 9’s.
How can i be sure i have HID’s?
If you think your headlights have been swapped out from the original, there are a couple different ways to tell if you car does indeed have HID headlights. The easiest way is to look at the front of your lens and find the stanley number. If it says D2S, its an HID headlight. If it says HB4, you have a non-hid headlight. (it may be HB3 in other countries) Another way to tell if you have an HID headlight is too look at how far out the low beam bulb housing “bubble lense” is. I’m not sure what the technical name is for this part, but what im showing here is that the HID bubble lense sticks out a lot more compared to a non hid. And finally if you are able to look at the back of the headlight, you will see the difference shown in these two headlights. Most notably that the HID’s have a larger housing section for the HID bulb and a cover bolted on the back. You can also see there is no fog light on the non-hid light.
Do I need to remove the headlight to change the bulbs?
Low beams, yes. You have to remove the front bumper and headlight to change the low beam bulbs. HID or not, you have to pull the headlight to get to the bulbs. Fog lights and high beam bulbs can be changes with the headlights still on the car, but it can be a tight fit.
What Bulb number do i need?
All Evo 8/9 high beams are 9005 bulbs. The low beam non-hid bulbs are 9006. The low beam HID bulbs are D2S. All fog light bulbs are H11.
How many mounting points does each headlight have?
All evo 8/9 headlights have 4 mounting points. Two top tabs, one inside tab and one side mount tab. If you are buying a used headlight, be sure to look for all 4 of these tabs to be in place and not cracked. If one tab is broken, the headlight would potential still work, but fitment will always be less than ideal. With the innermost tab broken from this headlight, you can see the headlight fitment near the front bumper does not look good.
Are evo 8 and 9 headlights different?
Yes, in the US market, all evo 9 headlights have a black chome inside look while the evo 8 headlight are the shiny chrome look.
Are my headlight JDM?
If they have the orange turn markers on the lower corner, they are JDM or EDM headlights. All USDM evo 8/9 headlights have the orange upper section in the turn markers. Keep in mind these headlight can be modified. However to remove the lense from the headlight, a baking process is required to remove the silicone that hold the lense in place. Usually, if a lense was ever removed, you will be able to tell by the excess silicone used to put the lense back in place.
