Hey Stephen! Excellent review as always. You are the only person I have seen on KZbin review this notebook. I see it has a vapor chamber but still hitting 90 to 100 degrees 😢. Liquid Metal is must for this notebook. If you cant undervolt that sucks also to get temps lower. I will probably purchase one of these when/if someone can get undervolting working.

Tempted to get this, though I'm a bit worried about the fan's loudness in an office setting. My last Sager is finally biting the dust, but after 14 years, it's no surprise. Still, I was very happy with it and how long it lasted, plus with how up-gradable it was. Too bad it seems like they lost that aspect now.

I have upgraded it from 32Gb Samsung DDR5 4800 MT/s to 64Gb Kingston Fury DDR5 5600 MT/s and i swapped out the 2Tb of some weird brand to two Kingston Renegade nvme 2Tb Pcie gen 4x4.0. Btw i am looking to upgrade the microcode on it. But it does not work. I have tried all sorts of things but no. Won't update the damn microcode. I am scared my i9 will deteriorate over time if i don't. My cpu has the 123 microcode.

Is this a better laptop than the MSI GT77 this generation?
@OWNORDISOWN
@OWNORDISOWN Жыл бұрын
The GT77 has way better cooling and the mechanical keyboard is great. But, unlike the X370, there is no advanced optimus and I must say the X370 was 100% stable and stutter free in all games tested, which is still a first. The BIOS is better on the GT77 as you have the advanced BIOS which makes it just like a desktop. Much of the options are available via software on the x370 but I couldn't get the undervolt to work. Also you get one more m2 slot on the GT77 so that is a big benefit.
@crazyelf1
@crazyelf1 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I think that overall, unless battery life is valuable, the GT77 represents the overall fastest laptop this generation. The 4k obale option for this generation for the Clevo is apparently the same as the MSI GT77. One flaw that both laptops have is that they can't do 4k 144Hz at 4:4:4 chroma subsampling. They have to use Display Stream Compression (DSC) . This is because of the bit rate limits of Raptor Lake. Only the newer Zen 4 Phoenix support UBHR 10, which could theoretically do 120Hz 4k without DSC. I hope that next generation can do UBHR 20, which should allow for 4k 240Hz without DSC.

Great review, big thanks for doing this 😃 Interestingly, my GT77 passes latencymon if I disable the ethernet port, which I don't use anyway. I let it go for about 10 minutes and it was fine. It was really bad prior that little tweak. So what that means is the driver for the ethernet port was stealing too much buffer time from other processes. I ended up just disabling it in bios so it doesn't even show up in device manager anymore. I thought the temps were ok for the Clevo considering it was pushing at least 80w on CPU when gaming. The Razer 18 only pushes 40 maximum when GPU also loaded so the Clevo is a lot less restricted. The thing is, Cinebench at 28K, was that a thermal issue as in throttling Stephen, or a power issue? Seeing the temps during cinebench would have been huge and just a heads up I think that's really useful. When I enable undervolting in my GT77 and it enables it in software, or if I even add it through the bios itself, it won't show up in HW Info either so I am staring to wonder if there is an issue with the app. I like how easy they made it to change the multipliers in the Clevo. Anyway to put it all into perspective, I did the maximum -0.100 undervolt on the CPU in the bios on my GT77 and disabled 8 of the E cores so it became a 16 core computer rather than 24, and my cinebench was 27,900 in that situation. It's doing similar to other laptops when they are using all 24 cores. By devoting all the power to less cores I was increasing clock speed and it's really single core performance that matters in most things. There are no games that need 24 cores and even the biggest music projects don't need that many. The only use I see for this continuing trend in adding on more cores all the time is for video rendering which uses them all. I think AMD have got it right this year with a max of 16 equal P cores and no E cores. But I couldn't find an AMD laptop with a USB4 port and since I run a thunderbolt 3 Firecuda gaming dock with 8TB storage, that was not an option for me. Clevo screen and KB nice, ghosting performance good. My main concern comes that this was heavily thermally modified by HID, and the other one I just found online was maxing out at near 100 degrees at just 3.2ghz. Ordering a HID evolution and importing it into Australia is very prohibitive due to shipping and tax, and buying one from the local reseller would be like the others that are not modified, i.e. HOT. As I saw the computer in this review, I would be happy with this, and I'd also have it on a large cooling pad which should help matters further. If I was based close to HID I'd have bought this without hesitation, especially due to having a rare G-SYNC 4K panel. I'd also reduce multipliers around 10% on P cores to just have a consistent, reliable performance. It also goes to show me that the local Australian seller are being disingenuous claiming this chassis can do a combined CONTINUOUS sustained 330W cooling. It just can't. That info is still claimed on their page today, I just checked! Ultimately, the performance on my GT77 is 33K stock no undervolt on Cinebench and 22.1K Timespy, very good. And with tweaking I can increase it but why bother. It sustains. 4.5ghz on P cores under 100% load and 200W LOL. However, MSI have released a bios that has neutered the CPU to 120W in all modes. I downgraded my bios. It was only supposed to be 120W in DGPU mode but even in optimus mode with 0 gpu load, there's a bug. All are complaining but who knows if it will ever get fixed. With that bios, my P cores were 3.7ghz under 100% load and only 70 ish degrees. Score was 28K. So we can see the massive difference with unrestricted wattage in the older bios, which is only limited by thermals. Overall I am happy but I wish I had G-Sync. Still, this Clevo is a nice machine but I think Clevo need to work on their thermals a bit more, that's part of my takeaway on this. What do you think? Cheers
@OWNORDISOWN
@OWNORDISOWN Жыл бұрын
Hey Teddy, thanks for the world's best comment!! I meant to show the thermals on CBR23. The CPU was 96 degrees, 3691 Mhz and 125W, its a pretty standard result for the 13900HX. One thing you can do on the GT77 is the imon tweak. I'm going to make that my next video. The GT77 is an awesome machine, certain ran the coolest out of all the machines I have used.

@OWNORDISOWN
@OWNORDISOWN Жыл бұрын
@teddym2808 yes, basically. The Imon tweak only works via the advanced BIOS on MSI laptops. You set an IMON slope offset and it tricks the CPU into thinking it is using less watts so it doesn't power throttle. Temps go up so the system needs good cooling. The GT77 is an ideal candidate.

Yikes @7:45 the 13900Hx is at 90c to 100c (throttling) in Performance mode.. This is after the Gelid + Fujipoly Extreme Thermal Pad solution done by HidEvolution.. They probably didn't do a bad job, so that shows how atrocious Intel 13th gen is in terms of temps, even on the most expensive laptops with 3rd party thermal help (Msi Gt77 is one of the only ones that can do a somewhat decent job).. Admittedly this is before the Mandatory Undervolt, but even that might not save it from hitting the 90's in gaming, and throttling outright when the cpu is fully taxed.. Well that's the price people who get Intel in mobile solutions have to pay when they are so crazy power hungry and inefficient. My Msi Gp76 with 11800H from GenTechPc with Liquid Metal and Fujipoly Thermal Pads would never throttle or go above 90c (not even on a single core) even at max cpu+gpu load for an extended period of time, and once both Cpu and Gpu were undervolted, the temps were even better (R23 by itself for 10 mins with a -.09 Undervolt on Core and Cache had no Core go above 70c, despite still reaching and sustaining 80w Cpu Package Power, which was about 12w less than at Stock due to the undervolt. It could also indefinitely sustain the 4.2ghz on all 8 cores, while also being able to Overclock despite just being an H class processor). Tiger Lake was truly the last good Intel mobile solution. I'll be going Zen 4 Dragon Range this generation if possible, ideally the 8 core 7745Hx, for top gaming performance (crucially the 1% lows which is why there is so much stuttering on these E-core plagued Intel duds) and power efficiency. Main issue is Gpu, since the mobile "4070" (lol) and below are all worthless and hardly an upgrade at all over 30 series cards, and are stuck at the obsolete 8gb of Vram, while 4080 are overpriced. Will also be atleast 6 months till the mobile 4070ti (Based on the desktop 4070) is announced in January at CES. I'm hoping Amd releases Navi 32 mobile before then, so I can pick up an Amd Advantage laptop. @8:20 "Perhaps if HidEvolution offered Liquid Metal, we would see improved Cpu temps in performance mode" Hard to imagine it wouldn't improve temps. They can't get much worse than throttling as is.. But yeh its a big failing of HidEvolution to not offer top tier thermal solutions (besides the fujipoly extreme thermal pads), meanwhile they charge a pretty penny for their upgrade. On the other hand GenTechPc has the clearly better thermal options, and they offer it for free.. @11:30 Pity about the Undervolt not working.. I'm sure there is a way to get it working, but would require some digging into on the forums.. This isn't ideal, since Undervolting is so essential. Luckily with Zen 4 Dragon Range, using AATU (Amd Apu Tuning Utility) for Cpu Undervolts is extremely easy and quick, and yields good results.
@OWNORDISOWN
@OWNORDISOWN Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great comment! I agree, I don't think the efficiency cores are that great for gaming and I'm sure they contribute ti stuttering. On my Alienware m16 disabling some of the E cores did help. That being said, on the 7945hx Asus Strix Scar 17 Dead Space remake was a stutter fest. This X370 was stutter free. My Tracer VII and its 13900HX rubs much cooler than this X370 and that is without the water cooler. Although I had to RMA it twice! Gentech are great for offering free repastes. I think if Hidevolution knew it was still going to run hot they would have used liquid metal. And that leads me to my main concern, and it's with every supplier of laptops. I don't think they are adequately tested. If they were then we wouldn't see these issues again and again
@slickrounder6045
@slickrounder6045 Жыл бұрын
@@OWNORDISOWN No thank you for the (as usual) great review. Not your fault that alot of these laptops are underwhelming consider their price demand of an arm and three legs. Yeh the E-cores have been shown on the forums to occasionally contribute to stuttering problems. Disabling the E-cores is a good option for people that care about primarily or exclusively about Gaming, since they do more harm than good. Unsure why your Strix Scar 17 with 7945Hx was plagued by stutters (some on the forums speculate there may be widespread Rtx 40 mobile issue, but I'm unsure). Jarrod also a few months ago mentioned in the Gaming Laptop forums that there were known issues that Oem's were grappling with and he was considering making a video on it (But seemingly never did). I have seen reliable reviews by GizmoSlipTech and TechGuyBeau featuring Zen 4 Dragon Range, and they noted better 1% lows and less stuttering than similar Intel models. Jarrod'sTech also benched the Scar 17 with 7945Hx versus the updated Scar 18 with 13980Hx, and the Zen 4 cpu yielded slightly better gaming results, more pronounced at 1440p and 4k, with notably higher 1% lows usually. From the video titled "Best Laptop Cpu 2023? Ryzen 9 7945Hx vs Intel i9-13980Hx"- There was double digit gain for 1% lows at 1440p in games like Dead Space (32.9 vs 28.1), Witcher 3 (43.6 vs 38.4), Total War Warhammer 3 (80.4 vs 74.3), Dying Light 2 (105.3 vs 94.8), Doom Eternal (156.8 vs 111.1), Rainbow Six Extraction (95.3 vs 60.2), A Plague Tale: Requiem (62.6 vs 57.7) F1 2021 (86.7 vs 67). At 4k the 1% lows in Cyberpunk (37.6 vs 34.1), Dying Light 2 (53.4 vs 49.7), Halo Infinite (65.4 vs 58.6), Witcher 3 (28.5 vs 25.8), Rainbow Six Extraction (57.8 vs 52.4). There were a few slight Intel leads, but overall Zen 4 pounded Intel at the crucial 1% lows, which is the main thing that indicates stuttering. Weird that your Dead Space Remake was a stutterfest, both from Jarrod's testing of it and livestreams I saw on GizmoSlipTech with the 7945Hx (on things like the Zephyrus Duo 16), the 7945Hx was less stuttery and consistently and objectively better than Intel in this game in both Fps totals and especially 1% lows. Perhaps your Scar 17 was throttling. If you would have Undervolted the 7945Hx using AATU with even a modest Curve Offset that average silicon can reliably reach of -20, that may have helped a good amount with the temps and performance. Yeh GenTech with their free repaste is awesome. I didn't know HidEvolution offered liquidmetal cause they didn't when i communicated with them a few years ago, but i checked now and you are right they do offer it for the Clevo you reviewed among other laptops. That would be the no-brainer option then if people are already paying for upgraded thermal paste (which is one of the main selling points of buying it from a Reseller as opposed to usually saving money from a retailer like Newegg or Amazon). I definitely agree that the laptops aren't adequately tested. Alot of these companies have implemented supposed "Liquid Metal" solutions done by machines like Alienware, and they consistently have 1 core with like a 10-20c higher temp from the rest of the cores, and its the one that throttles the entire Cpu, suggesting a botched application from the machines (and this isn't an anomaly, there are dozens of reliable reports indicating its widespread). Asus has similar issues as well with their alleged liquid metal solution. Lenovo with their amazing Honeywell PTM7958 does a better stock job on average, but even it can't tame Intel 13th gen (although their Zen 4 Dragon Range temps are really respectable for stock).

@@OWNORDISOWN That was his first testing of Zen 4 mobile. I don't believe he has tested any other mobile zen 4 except for the Rog Ally with its Phoenix custom version of the 7840u (Z1 Extreme). Yeh I watched your Alienware reviews and commented on them there, as usual Alienware bungles their cooling solution (for Cpu, for Gpu they are usually solid). The m18 in both the Intel and Ryzen configs have cooling issues. I'd be willing to bet that the 7745Hx would have the best Cpu temp results on the m18 (since its much more power efficient and even at 50w or less its a monster performer), but sadly and inexplicably Dell are limiting the 7745Hx to only be paired with the 4060.. anything above the 4060 forces the lackluster 12 core 7845Hx with its elevated price and 2 CCD's, with no improvement to gaming (usually the reverse, in a similar way to how desktop 8 core Ryzen processors outperformed the 12 core 2ccd models such as seen by the 7800x3d beating the 7900x3d and the 7700x beating the 7900x).

Great review stephen. Nice of nvidia to continue the pattern of delivering disappointment to us with this ''rtx 4090'' thats barely 10% ahead of the ''4080''. I think the 175w is simply too low for such a GPU. Its clocks were barely above 2ghz. You could probably make the gtx 1080 you have hit similar clocks to this 4090. This should've shipped with 220w to 230w TDP. If turing had 200w GPU's and 330w bricks, why are we regressing in brick capacity and TDP of mobile GPU's? I mean lenovo managed to cool a 180w rtx 3080ti in a 16' laptop. Whats up with these insultingly low TDP values from so called high end mobile gpu's? It clearly degrades performance too much. To me the entirety of rtx 4000 is a disappointment and slap in the face. First with the blatently false naming for most of them and secondly for the stupidly high prices. Whats the point of being roughly 2x faster than the 3070ti 150w when it also costs 3x more? The $970 nitro 5 with the 150w 3070ti is available on new egg. And that GPU will do 1440p quite well, and will even edge out the 4070 at 1440p.

Owned one of these too before returning it (From Clevo Computer), Temperatures always at 100c and it never really cooled down after some use in gaming and even when just searching in the web it got loud often. Top right side above the keyboard was untouchable after some heavy gaming, not to mention it also had the freezing issue, didnt have much options in the control center. The fans ramp up so loud even with the headphones I used I could hear it clearly. Now I own a XMG Neo 17 (E23) and I am way more satisfied, better temperatures, the fans sound way quieter, much options you can change in the control center, after heavy playing the fans go quieter after few seconds. So my personal experience with it was very poor, they should have stayed with a thicker chassis like the x170 to be something like a MSI Titan Rival I would have loved that but now its just eh.

Yes, I believe the Xmg Neo 17 is the same as my Cyberpowerpc Tracer Vii. I really like it too. It is a shame the X370 runs so hot, my Tracer doesn't run as hot or loud either. I still love my Clevo P870TM though!

I would pass on this machine. As usual, Clevo is just as expensive as other brands, but with significant drawbacks. If it was cheaper then it would be worth a look. At this price, it's a hard pass IMO.

I think $2649 for the 240hz QHD and 4080 is about the same price as other machines. It is a shame the cooling was not up to snuff. My Tong Fang Tracer VII cools much better (and quieter).

@@OWNORDISOWN Other brands are starting to run sales already, so I don't think this is a good price. They have some work to do.

Wow, only took half a year to have a high end laptop that doesnt stutter? Thats part of why I skipped this gen. Got a super cheap eofy deal on a last gen XE4 Aorus 15 instead, 130W 3070ti for $1500aud and it'll hold me over til hopefully something highend next gen excites me. Even though I'm not liking this gigashyte software (only slightly better than Clevo's hotkey trash) and the horrible locked down cpu power limits on the 12700H are utterly castrating any 100% load task --- Been saying for over a decade that I wish Clevo were more active in getting more review units out there to build some brand recognition, instead of leaving it up to small individual resellers.

I agree, they need to better market penetration. My colleague, Chris, is testing a bunch of machines and he is getting huge stutters. I recall that Asus Strix Scar 17bwith R9 7845HX and 4080, it was like a slide show in Dead Space remake. This Clevo was so refreshing that everything was smooth. Whether that was the tuning HIDEVOLUTION did I don't know...

Same. Got a cheap nitro 5 with a 150w rtx 3070ti for about $1270 which was pretty cheap in my place. Just gonna hold on to it for the next couple of years cause obviously nvidia and amd have no interest in having and improving performance improvements this year.
