The Atheist Experience 20.25 for June 26, 2016, with Matt Dillahunty and Phil Session.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
► freethoughtblog...
KZbin comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZbin comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

that is some funny ass reasoning. I suppose Socrates, Plato and Aristotle would be out of the picture since neither of them had any "formal education." Just as a quick reminder, Socrates knew that Greek gods were baloney and he rejected those gods from Athens.

@ePICS Since they predate the first universities by 1,000+ years, I am pretty sure that Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle did not have degrees in ANYTHING. I am equally confident that Ron did not get past middle school. I keep hoping to hear intelligent conversations on AXP, but the intelligence only seems to come from one direction.

@Evolved Primate If theory’s were fact then we would just call them facts. Also, if theory’s were facts then it would be impossible to prove them wrong… which they do all the time. 10 Most Famous Scientific Theories That Were Later Debunked By Scientist 1- Fleischmann-Pons’s Nuclear Fusion Cold fusion is a supposed kind of nuclear reaction that would occur at relatively low temperatures compared with hot fusion. As a new type of nuclear reaction, it gained much popularity after reports in 1989 by famous electrochemists Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann. The craze about cold fusion became weaker as other scientists, after trying to repeat the experiment, failed to get similar results. 1a - One of Modern Science’s Greatest Misconceptions The misconception that mass is destroyed in nuclear reactions. 2- Phrenology Now widely considered as a pseudoscience, phrenology was the study of the shape of skull as indicative of the strengths of different faculties. Modern scientific research wiped it out by proving that personality traits could not be traced to specific portions of the brain. 3- The Blank Slate The Blank Slate theory (or Tabula rasa), widely popularized by John Locke in 1689, proposed that individuals are born without built-in mental content and that their knowledge comes from experience and perception. Modern research suggests that genes and other family traits inherited from birth, along with innate instincts of course, also play a very important role. 4- Luminiferous Aether The aether (or ether) was a mysterious substance that was thought to transmit light through the universe. The idea of a luminiferous aether was debunked as experiments in the diffraction and refraction of light, and later Einstein’s special theory of relativity, came along and entirely revolutionized physics. 5- Einstein’s Static (or Stationary) Universe A static universe, also called a “stationary” or “Einstein” universe, was a model proposed by Albert Einstein in 1917. It was problematic from the beginning. Edwin Hubble’s discovery of the relationship between red shift obliterated it by completely demonstrating that the universe is constantly expanding. 6- Martian Canals The Martian canals were a network of gullies and ravines that some 19th century scientists erroneously thought to exist on Mars. First detected in 1877 by Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, modern telescopes and imaging technology completely debunked the myth. The “canals” were actually found to be a mere optical illusion. 7- Phlogiston Theory First postulated in 1667 by German physician Johann Joachim Becher, Phlogiston Theory is an obsolete scientific theory regarding the existence of “phlogiston”, a fire-like element, which was contained within combustible bodies and released during combustion. The theory tried to explain burning processes such as combustion and the rusting of metals, which are now jointly termed as “oxidation”. 8- The Expanding or Growing Earth The Expanding Earth or Growing Earth is a hypothesis suggesting that the position and relative movement of continents is dependent on the volume of the Earth increasing. Modern science has turned down any expansion or contraction of the Earth. 9- Discovery of the Planet Vulcan A small planet that was supposed to exist in an orbit between Mercury and the Sun, French mathematician Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier coined the name “Vulcan” while trying to explain the nature of Mercury’s orbit. No such planet was ever discovered, while the orbit of Mercury was explained in detail by Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity. 10- Spontaneous (or Equivocal) Generation Spontaneous generation or equivocal generation is an obsolete principle concerning the origin of life from inanimate matter. The hypothesis was brought out by Aristotle who advocated the work of earlier natural philosophers. It was proven wrong in the 19th century by the experiments of Louis Pasteur, drawing influence from Francesco Redi who was an early proponent of germ theory and cell theory.

Ron exhibited the whole motivation behind I.d. near the beginning - an anxiety that a scientifically literate populace will be unlikely to adopt conservative religious ideologies. I don't know how warranted that anxiety is, but if you read any of the Discovery Institute's internal literature, it's evident that this fear is the entire reason for the movement's existence. They believe more people will adopt positions and principles they approve of in a society with a heightened state of scientific illiteracy and distrust, and so they are attempting to visit this on their country.

I know Matt often say "Why are you calling us?" in response to evolution questions, but he does know _why_. Cause creationists _require_ the Theory of Evolution to be false. One of many that they need to be false to even "start" proof of their god.

The caller was about to claim that sometimes just because someone is an outlier they are not incorrect; which is irrelevant to the question being asked. Yes, there are times when an outlier is correct and the majority is incorrect, however, does that occur the majority of the time? No. So the answer to the question being asked (if two people claim their models are correct; one of whose model abides by the conclusions of the bulk of experts in the field being discussed and the other whose model doesn't agree with the majority of experts, then usually who is correct?) is, "the one who agrees with the majority of experts". The question had nothing to do with who IS correct but rather who is USUALLY correct. The caller was unable to discern this and so was about to incorrectly apply the ad populum fallacy.

Or the Galileo gambit, which is basically that if you're mocked for your ideas or otherwise rejected by the majority, you must be advancing something that's true His appeal to mere "evidence" seems to be personal incredulity fallacy: he doesn't see the evidence as pointing to natural selection and he invoked irreducible complexity, which is already applying an anthropic principle, a problem in itself, so yeah...indoctrinated by Kent Hovind or the like potentially in saying "I believe in this, but this other stuff isn't science"

The most critical flaw in ID is that they have no data on the existence or need of the designer. They want to infer a designer without proving such could even exist while the overwhelming evidence we do have clearly infers a purely natural process.
@ToHoldNothing
@ToHoldNothing 5 жыл бұрын
And if they could, then the designer is merely a powerful entity that essentially does nothing otherwise, because that gets into the religious claims that still haven't been demonstrated of intervention with prayer and such. This designer could be the Ellimist from Animorphs or some other sci fi entity of surprising abilities and qualities, but still within natural occurrences and thus verifiable and falsifiable with science. If it's outside scientific consideration, you're into philosophy at that point or pseudoscience to be "generous"

12:43pm Oct 29, 2019 Australian scientists may have solved one of the biggest mysteries in science: where do we come from? The ground-breaking discovery published in the journal Nature on Tuesday reveals what scientists believe is the ancestral 'homeland' of human-beings. And they say the research has the potential to provide insights not only into our past, but into our future. "Now, we can finally tell the story of us," said Professor Vanessa Hayes, the Sydney-based academic who led the study. What does the new research tell us? It is well-established among scientists that the history of modern humans can be traced to Africa. However, the new research shows humans do not originate from East Africa, as it was previously thought, but from Southern Africa. Her team followed the trail of mitochondrial DNA, which is passed on unchanged from a mother to her child, with the hope of tracing the thread back to our earliest female ancestors. That led her first to the Kalahari Desert, and then to the Khoesan (pronounced koh sahn) people, a group identified through their use of a clicking language. "They represent a lineage that never left the homeland," Professor Hayes said. The research combines a broad variety of knowledge and evidence to piece together a history of the first human begins. "Instead of just releasing a paper with a whole bunch of data from one field of study, we could tell the story." Professor Hayes said. She said one of the most exciting opportunities for science will be understanding who we are genetically in order to tackle disease. "These are the people that represent the longest line of modern humans and therefore they are healthy because they've survived the longest," she said. "To understand disease, we have to understand 'healthy' and the genomic definition of health." Her research will focus particularly on prostate cancer. "Prostate cancer has a strong link to Africa, so we need to understand the genetic link to Africa to understand more about these diseases and how they work in modern society."

LAW of LOGIC? There is zero evidence for a creator. This planet was not created for humans. The deadliest animal on Earth isn't a snake or a shark, or even human. It's something most of us view as just a mild nuisance - the mosquito. The tiny insect is responsible for a million deaths a year, largely because it transmits terrible diseases like malaria, dengue, Zika and encephalitis. Intelligent Design & Ontological Teeth! We are so well designed that we have teeth that can, and do, rot and fall out in excruciating pain and then don't grow back. Shark's teeth, however, do grow back. If we are more important to the "designer" than a bunch of lousy killer fish, how come they can regrow teeth while we get stuck with the options of gumming our food, implants, or dentures (the latter two options being quite expensive)? Damnit!?
