Oikawa having an inferiority complex is such a nice twist to his character. He looks like he has the natural talent in volleyball. But he just works super hard to the point of injuring himself. Yes, it's petty but that's who Oikawa is and he still cherishes the game and his team. His inferiority complex with Kageyama is such an interesting twist to the typical "pretty boy good at everything" archetype that he looks and gives off.

Actually I don’t think Oikawa acts like he is special with his team. He has a silly personality and the team kinda takes it in stride. It is all fun and games and Oikawa genuinely cares for them and is well respected. Iwa’s talk didn’t just make him like the team, it made him a setter dedicated to bringing 100 percent of everyone’s strength in order to be the better 6.. Personally I don’t think Suga’s personally is the optimal way of being in a team, I would actually love to be Oikawa’s teammate irl. The only one Oikawa has a problem with is Kags, but even then he found a way to keep the negative energy to himself

Oikawa saying “lets hurry and finish the final set” at the end kinda gives me chills. He’s pissed that kageyama and karasuno are giving him a hard time, yet he’s excited that his evolution gives him a challenge

I really love Iwaizumi & Oikawa’s relationship. A lot of ppl misinterpret Iwa’s lines as him disliking Oikawa, when they’ve actually been best friends since elementary, thats just him teasing him. He only lets Oikawa call him Iwa-chan because of how close they are despite it’s silliness lol
@everest61053 жыл бұрын
I think ppl hold the flashback against Oikawa too much when kageyama didnt even care himself (he ate a snack in the locker room right after lmao) oikawa was like 13 going thru a mental breakdown & when he looked at kags he only saw his worst fear. not excusing his actions, but him lashing out is understandable, he even apologized immediately
@blah4093 жыл бұрын
exactly. it’s not like he’s going around slapping ppl left and right lol. he said sorry and you can tell he couldn’t believe he did that himself. ppl always saying “he’s just a kid”. they both are! it’s like saying it would be okay if he was older? or if it was the other way around? so let’s move on like kageyama and go have a snack haha

Bruh Kags was 12 (grade 7, late birthday) and Oikawa was 14-15 (grade 9) and it's one thing to smack a friend (Kags totally learned how to interact with Hinata by watching Iwa-chan and Oikawa-san LOL) and it's another to have your role model try to hurt you and is only stopped by someone else. Like Kags is ok only cause he's oblivious to what even happened but even he can tell that Oikawa hates him and he didn't even do anything (luckily someone was there to tell him why but you'll see later). I don't hate Oikawa at all (he's my bby) but he's immature compared to the other kids his age (Suga, Daichi, Kuroo, Kita, Iwai-chan my king) and it's important to acknowledge that. I don't think it's right to hate him but I don't blame people for holding the flashback against him it just shows how much he can grow still. His jealousy and anger are important parts of him that we see in no other character.

i really love 20:45 dialogue especially when he says “what is this? i’m really pissed off and yet..” hes actually feeling proud of kageyama in a sense. it shows that even tho oikawa might not like kageyama, he still sees him as his “student” and just wants to see him grow out of his ‘king’ rut that he’s in in order to see him grow cuz he has so much potential that oikawa sensed in him since middle school.
@blah4093 жыл бұрын
“he’s a kid” in the flashback, well they’re both kids. him stressing, reaching his breaking point makes him feel more realistic to me. i can understand ppl not liking him cause his personality. i think it’s hilarious and not so one dimensional. the diff personality in the show makes it more entertaining.

I wish it showed Oikawa constantly injuring himself from overworking (hence the white knee brace) in this ep. I feel like showing Oikawa desperately trying to better himself (to that extent) would help ppl understand him a bit more. It why he’s so inspiring to me, hes the definition of hard work pays off.

@seekittycat3 жыл бұрын
I don't really like that tbh cause not working so hard that you injure yourself is an extremely important part of volleyball. Now getting injured is a habit that has be ingrained cause it's something that can end your career. But then it shows his immaturity and how despite the fact Kageyama looks up to him the most he's not some perfect untouchable unrealistic character. I love how he has flaws and is just human and why him being with Iwa-chan is so important, Iwa completes all those aspects he's weak at.
@kronikevaporation60073 жыл бұрын
22:30 Hard disagree with Izzy here. If everybody tweaks their personality to that of Suga's, what's the point in diversity? Even in an actual volleyball match, two opposing setters just through the way they set their teammates, you can distinguish between their personalities. And if anything, Suga's personality has come about from a major inferiority complex about himself. So he's flawed as well, just like any other character. I know you know, but it was a flashback in which Oikawa kept saying he wants to win. Iwa got him on track. He still wants to win just like anybody else but as a team now and not an individual anymore. And so my question is, in the current Oikawa scenario, what has given Izzy the idea that Oikawa values himself more than the team? I'd be interested in seeing why exactly he thinks this way and if any instances can be picked as evidence. Because my initial suspicion was cemented with Izzy being smart later on, backtracking on himself and figuring out that it is majorly down to "picking on Kags". I get it man. But to objectively look at a character, this bias needs to be gone imo especially for a reactor. If over attachment to one character inhibits from objectively analysing another, I think the efforts of the show in fleshing out that character goes to a waste. Apologies if I came off rude anywhere

I forgot how much I love this episode and I realised that among all the episodes season 1 offers this one is one of the funniest and one of the most heart-wrenching ones to me. Honestly, I didn't really like Oikawa(Oi-ka-wa not Oi-kai-wa hehe) at first as well, but this episode changed my mind about him. Teasing between friends is especially common around their age and I just love how Iwaizumi always manages to knock Oikawa off his high horse and encourage and support him from behind as his best friend at the same time. I've said my piece about Oikawa's personality on your Haikyuu character ranking video so I won't start this again, but as many people say, it's okay to be human. If I were in his place I probably wouldn't have done anything like try to hit someone else, but I might have taunted them HAHAHA!!! I agree with the last part of your discussion so much!! the way Oikawa targeted his resentment towards Kageyama in middle school was so wrong and I'm not only talking about the scene when he almost hit him, but in general! as his senior and his teammate he never tried to help him out or teach him anything. He is known for bringing up the best of his teammates but he just didn't consider Kageyama one of them, simply because he is a "genius" and play the same position and I think that is one of the main reasons why Kageyama is so awkward and clueless when it comes to giving and receiving the support of the team, he is just not used to it and it's sad.. on the contrary, Suga is the senior setter Kageyama really needed to make him understand the importance and warmth of the team and make him feel accepted even if they are playing the same position, their Senior-Junior relationship is so freaking precious :')

And I see the Oikawa apologists made it here before me, I guess. While I like Oikawa (due to later circumstances), I really don't like what he tried to do to Kageyama. I feel like that kind of jealousy and intimidation tactics are too similar to some of the interactions I had with my own Oikawa on the court. I don't think some fans realize how damaging that can be. Yes, he was a kid and sure, he struggled with inferiorities, but that doesn't excuse his behavior. Oikawa could have been a support for Kageyama as an older, experienced player, and he chose to be cruel and petty. I do think that his actions after the incident (refusing to help Kageyama) really contributed to how Kageyama acts as the dictatorial king when he's a third year. He was unable to trust his senpai, so how can he trust his own teammates? (I'm sure I'll get a lot of hate for this statement.)
@fablihakhan9043 жыл бұрын
But aren’t you doing the same thing for Kageyama that you think people are doing for Oikawa? Like Oikawa has never been that way with his own team. And Kageyama’s problems of wanting to win alone were his own. Kageyama’s problem wasn’t his trust issues it was how he refused to see his teammates as individuals or actually play with them. Making Kageyama’s issues be somewhat Oikawa’s fault is excusing Kageyama of his own problems and issues. Also no one accepts what Oikawa did with Kageyama and no one is excusing him. We just don’t want to judge a person’s entirety by one act he did as a 13 year old. just because Oikawa was a flawed teen who was about to do something horrible, it doesn’t mean Oikawa is a horrible person. Oikawa has his own issues. I mean in a perfect world Oikawa could ignore those issues and be a sweet senpai to Kageyama but Oikawa is far from perfect and he did the next best thing, push Kageyama away with silly pettiness
@Candy-on6lk3 жыл бұрын
i think oikawa has to do nothing with how Kageyama is, he is the result of his own actions and thoughts. What oikawa did was not mentor Kageyama and teach him things and that has nothing to do with him turning out to be a dictator. What many people forget that at that time oikawa was himself a kid and at some point in our life we can relate how oikawa felt. I think people need to change their perspective towards oikawa its really sad seeing it.

@@everest6105 I already know what happens later, so I'm aware of that, but you cannot tell me that Oikawa's actions didn't have ramifications on how Kageyama acts later. Every action impacts. I never said that what Kageyama did was right, but to fully absolve Oikawa of a role in his development shows a lack of understanding in how impactful treating someone with disrespect can be.

@@Candy-on6lk I could never relate with Oikawa's way of treating people and being petty. I knew an Oikawa, and they made me almost quit volleyball. She tore me down constantly and wouldn't help me improve at all. So no, I can't relate to his character much.
