As a doll collector and Barbie fan, this was delightful. I have a copy of Barbie Birthday Party at Walt Disney World '94 on VHS and I watched it CONSTANTLY as a kid. Strangely enough, the only Disney character that makes an appearance is a brief glimpse of Goofy riding on one of the old World Showcase buses. It's an absolute fever dream of a show, and I highly recommend it for anyone curious about the state of Barbie in the 90s. Also would have love to have seen some Dance! Workout With Barbie, but that's more "giant oversized doll" than "costume character."

I really enjoyed this video, but I think one of the things I like the most is seeing a different perspective on Barbie’s. Based on what Disney Dan says, I would wager that I (a girl who grew up watching all of the Barbie movies when they still sold them in stores, and playing with them almost all my life) have more background knowledge. And it’s really interesting to see someone who this is fresh look at the costumes. Like, I was always like, yeah, Barbie island princess, that’s just what she looks like, but looking at it from the perspective of an adult, it is kind of a wild costume. Or the trolls in fairy topia, that’s just what they were, but I could see them being creepy to someone who wasn’t previously aware of the movies. I really enjoyed this new perspective and retrospective, especially as I’m getting hyped to see the Barbie movie!!!!

My mom managed to scrape together the money for nose bleeds to see Fairytopia live. While I wasn't a huge Barbie girl I loved fantasy and thus loved the movies. She took me and my best friend and even sprung for the tulip glow sticks which I'm sure were super over priced. While I definitely couldn't see much from as far back as we were I was just happy to be there. Never realized it was Barbies first touring live show.

The 2000s Barbie direct to video movies are HUGE nostalgia for me, ESPECIALLY the Mariposa one as I adore both butterflies and fairies. We all know about the Jem vs Barbie lore, but I'm about to drop some rarely talked about Mattel and Hasbro lore: the original mascots. Back in the 50s, it was common to see toy companies have their own mascots. Mattel had two: Matty Mattel, a boy with a striped shirt and a crown, and his Sister Belle, a girl with a ponytail and bow-tie. Matty was always seen in the logo at the end of a Mattel commercial, complete with tagline "You can tell it's Mattel, it's swell!", but Belle seems to be rare [if she even did show up in commercials]. Matty and Belle hosted a show called Matty's Funday Funnies, which first hosted Harveytoons [including Casper the Friendly Ghost], and later Beany And Cecil. Some of the episodes and bumpers are here on KZbin, and I think they're pretty neat. Sadly, Matty and Belle were dropped in the 70s, but Matty returned in the 80s, but only on Mattel toy packages and not in any commercials. Matty would make ANOTHER comeback in the early 2000s for the Matty Collector site, but Mattel made a huge mistake: they gave Matty one of the, if not, THE WORST mascot redesigns. Matty now looked like a smug jerk, and to make things worse, he would show up on the error screens, leading to him becoming a very hated mascot [there's an entire video on the Matty Collector fiasco from Spector Creative]. In 2011, Mattel made the wise decision to return Matty to his 80s design, but they also brought Belle back! She now has a matching outfit, which makes sense, as Belle and Matty are twins. This ends the Mattel part of the mascot lore, now for the shorter Hasbro mascot lore. In the 1950s, Hasbro created a boy mascot, creatively named Hasbro, who would be used in various commercials, including some for the original scary Mr. Potato Head. Mae Questel, better known as Betty Boop and Olive Oyl from Popeye, did Hasbro's voice. He was also used in the 60s [you could see him at the end of GI Joe and other 60s ads], but in 1967/1968, he was dropped. But look carefully at the smile in the current Hasbro logo, it bares a resemblance to Hasbro [mascot]'s smile. I know Matty and Belle have more recent walkarounds, but I don't know if they and Hasbro had any vintage walkarounds. As a 2000s person, vintage company lore is incredibly interesting.

Now I want a video on this, that was absolutley fascinating to read and I never knew about Mattel and Hasbro having mascots.

My goodness: that "completely new float" they constructed for the World Summit? It's still in use. Among other things, it was a Central Park bridge in 2008, with Kermit on a log singing "I Believe," that year's Macy's Christmas song. They love recycling.

I was in a Macy’s parade. I love That u said the Pegasus Barbie dancer needed a slightly different outfit to maintain body heat. I was in the parade in 2017 with my cheer team and it was snowing. They had us in cheap super thin short skirts and tops. I’m talking thinner than bathing suit material, it was costume fabric. And we couldn’t have jackets, hats, gloves, blankets, anything. We had to wake up at 5am to get ready, then wait over an hour in the snow for our turn to walk.
