Evolution of Cockpit View in F1 Racing Games (1997 - 2024)

F1 24 is being released this week and one track that got an update in the new game is Spa, home of the Belgian Grand Prix and the infamous Eau Rouge corner. Here you can see this iconic corner being taken in cockpit view in over 30 different official Formula 1 video games, from Sony's 1997 PS1 game all the way to the brand new F1 24 by Codemasters. The Eau Rouge is one of the most famous corners in motorsport, with its insane elevation taken at high speed while cornering. It is also featured in a ton of official Formula 1 games, as the Belgian Grand Prix has been part of the F1 calendar in most of the past 30 years.
For this F1 game evolution video series I looked at more than 40 different games that were released on PlayStation systems and 31 of them made it into this particular video.
Many of you will know the annual F1 games by Codemasters that have been released on PC, PlayStation and Xbox since 2010 but there were also many official F1 games before that.
The first F1 game by Codemasters actually came out in 2009 already but it was exclusive to Wii and PSP. And in 2000-2003 there were multiple official games per year, with EA's F1 series and Sony's Formula One series competing against each other.
Note that the PS1, PS2 and PSP games are played via emulator, which improves their resolution but can lead to some texture bugs that wouldn't happen on actual hardware, especially with the PS2 games, so keep that in mind when judging the look of the games in the video.

Yeah, that period was pretty insane. F1 was freely giving out their license to multiple developers at the same time back then, so they could all compete against each other in trying to make the best game.

Undoubtedly, yes, but it's important to know F1 09 was on the Wii. It was a sort of lazy effort by the new rights holder (Codemasters) to pump something out quickly. It was poorly received at the time and ran on a console that wasn't renowned for its graphic capacities. There were other games around at the time that looked a lot better than it.

​@@TobinhoDiaz It is also important to highlight that there hadn't been a new F1 game since 2006, as the 2007 PS3 edition doesn't count, being merely a port of the 2006 game for the new console. This gap allowed them to better focus on developing F1 2010 for other platforms later on. For a game on a low-performance console, F1 2009 still performed quite well, but for me, the real leap forward came with the release of F1 2010.

I noticed you recorded the footage of F1 04 on PSCX2; how did you manage to get the proper widescreen FOV working for the game? By default it's always zoomed.

For most of the PS2 games it shows a notification "widescreen patch" enabled when I launch them in PCSX2 and everything is fixed automatically. I didn't have to do anything manually. Maybe you were using an older version of PCSX2, so try again with a newer one and in the settings check options like "enable game fixes" or "enable widescreen patches". Make sure to download the "nightly" build of PCSX2, as the "stable" one is very outdated. The terminology of the PCSX2 devs is a bit weird there.

Thats because you are using the 2.0 ISO from the Platinum release, you must use a 1.0 release date of the game to have the proper camera

You sadly missed a couple of important F1 games, including: - F1 Racing Simulation (1997, PC, simulates the 1996 F1 season) - Grand Prix Legends (1998, PC, simulates the 1967 F1 season, also one of iRacing's granddaddies) - Grand Prix 3 (2000, PC, simulates the 1998 F1 season) - Grand Prix 4 (2002, PC, simulates the 2001 F1 season) Nice video regardless!

You are wrong. I didn't miss those games at all. They are just not among the games that I selected for the video. If you want to give a shoutout to other cool games that exist, then just say "some other great F1 games are..." or something like that. Don't use language like "you missed" or "you forgot". Otherwise it comes across as very accusatory and in many cases it is also just plain wrong and false accusations like that will usually not be received very well, even if you say "nice video" afterwards. When you say that people "miss" or "forget" those games you are suggesting that people are leaving them out by mistake. But you have no way to know if that is the case and you shouldn't just assume that. People may also be fully aware of those games and simply aren't choosing to include them, for example because they don't actually have them. And it's extremely frustrating when you spend multiple weeks recording over THIRTY different games and then 90% of the comments are about games that are NOT in the video and almost nobody is commenting on any of the things that you are actually showing. I am really disappointed with everyone here. People are so ungrateful and unappreciative of the work that I put into these videos, completely ignoring everything I do and only talking about what else I could have still done on top of it. Maybe the Grand Prix games are "important" but surely some of the games in the video are important as well, so why don't you share your thoughts about those?

@@Paragleiber It is a misunderstanding because my comment was never meant negative in any way, which is why I really don't get why you are acting that defensively right now? I definitely do understand that it's frustrating. As a small content creator myself, I also had those moments as well when you put a lot of time and effort into your videos. However, I'm not ungrateful in the slightest about your videos as I watched some more after this one and I'm always a fan of those evolution videos. I personally only played a couple of the PS1/PS2 games, mainly because I grew up on PC and a few of those happened to be ported to PC as well, such as F1 97, 2000 or Racing Championship. The 2000 EA game and F1RC were quite different on PC tho. The reason why I mentioned the Grand Prix games is due to how they were ahead of their time, mainly because of how weather was simulated from GP3 on as the games literally simulated passing clouds that could lead to different conditions on the track. The AI was also very smart as it also forced you into errors. GPL on the other hand I mentioned due to the connection with iRacing (same team, just under a different name) as well as the way the suspension was simulated - and of course because it features the 1960s version of Spa. :) Look, if I didn't care about your video at all, I wouldn't bothered to comment on it in first place, that's always something I keep in mind when I make my own videos. Don't see comments like mine as "hey, you did an awful job by not including those games". That's not my intention at all.

Just look at the comment here from "jakengamer4295" and you will see what kind of people I regularly have to deal with under this type of video. And the reason why I perceived your comments as negative is because you kept using the words "miss" and "forget". Even in your first reply you said again that people "forget" games. Those two words are inherently negative. When you tell someone that they missed or forgot something, then you are telling them that they did something wrong. Just avoid those words in the future if you don't want to come across as negative. Like I said a good thing to say instead would be "some other great games are...". That way you can still give a shoutout to your favorite games but you are doing it without criticizing the creator of the video. :)

F1 Championship Edition is not in this particular video because this video uses Spa as the track and Spa is not included in that game, as it wasn't part of the 2006 calendar. I actually included the game in several of my other videos, so feel free to express your love for it there.
