@@RandomGuy37 Similar to how Makinen was going to go home after he thought Sainz would easily win the title, but then a friend came on the phone saying the Toyota Corolla Sainz was driving had blown up. Makinen thought the friend was kidding him, but then some reporters started telling him as well and he realised it was true. Probably the most dramatic title deciders in motorsports. The WRC equivalent of Man City vs QPR.

Because he's an extremely consistent driver and has been pretty much since before he was 20. In 2017, whenever he finished a race without severe mitigating circumstances (strategy at Monaco and Massa terrorism at Monza), he never finished behind a slower or equal car. In 2018, whenever he finished a race without a skill issue (Australia spin, China crash, and Monaco FP3 crash), he never finished behind a slower or equal car. [This is the only time I have to exclude skill issues - the six race stretch to start the season is almost inarguably his worst stretch of races in his career, especially when considering races he finished. Hilariously, in this alternate timeline, he wins three of the four races he finished during that stretch, only finishing behind Ocon and Gasly at Monaco.] In 2019 and 2020, whenever he finished a race without severe mitigating circumstances (Vettel terrorism at Silverstone 2019, engine penalty and Perez terrorism at Monza 2019, Bottas terrorism at Mexico 2019, and an asymmetrical front wing at Turkey 2020), he never finished behind a slower or equal car. In 2021, he finished a race without severe mitigating circumstances (Bottas terrorism in Hungary) behind an equal car once (Hamilton at Bahrain) and behind a slower car zero times. In 2022, whenever he finished a race without severe mitigating circumstances (Perez Q3 red flag at Monaco, blocked Venturi tunnel at Silverstone, qualifying strategy blunder at Singapore, setup issues at Brazil), he won. In 2023, he finished a race without severe mitigating circumstances (Q2 engine failure at Jeddah and setup issues at Singapore) behind another car once (Perez at Baku). So far in 2024, whenever he's finished a race, he's won.

It's actually way funnier (and way worse) than real life - the safety car mistakenly picks up the nearly lapped Lando Norris, putting Sainz nearly a whole lap ahead of Lando (as well as Esteban Ocon), and the race director fails to wave the two cars through, which would be the standard procedure. Only after fierce lobbying from McLaren team principal Zak Brown did the race director finally order the safety car to give Norris and Ocon the wave through - but with only two laps until the checkered flag, and the fast pace of the safety car, Norris and Ocon were utterly unable to catch back up to the queue, with Norris finishing 55 seconds behind Sainz, never having an opportunity to attack for the win and the championship.

He was a decent #2 driver, basically the 1990s version of Perez or Bottas but with less individual success. Worse still for Brundle, the availability of former champions like Johnny Herbert means this alternate timeline would not involve him making a name for himself as a prominent TV commentator. Anthony Davidson would be another big loser, his career in the top class of the World Endurance Championship never getting off the ground thanks to Peugeot and Toyota picking drivers with more success in the WEC’s feeder series (Formula 1, so named because it would lead to LMP1 seats for successful drivers) than he had. He would now be hosting a sim racing podcast, not on TV covering F1.

I did the math for the 2024 season in this system, and Piastri achieves unheard of levels of domination. In 22 races so far, he wins 19, with 4/5 sprints, with 20 poles (4 sprints) and 13 fastest laps to boot. He scores 569 points, out of 612 maximum points for a perfect season, 93% of the theoretical limit. Here are some highlights Bahrain - Piastri starts the season and everyone knows its already over. He wins from pole, and laps every other car except Lance Stroll, who finishes P2 37 seconds behind, though Logan Sargeant gets fastest lap despite finishing last Jeddah - Ferrari fields a car for the first and only time since 2021, as rookie Oliver Bearman gets 2nd place and the fastest lap on his debut race. Piastri wins from pole Australia - Piastri wins his home race from pole and gets fastest lap, finishing almost a minute ahead of the competition Miami - So far, Piastri has won 5 races and 2 sprints, all from pole, and he looks set to do it again, starting from the front of the grid. However, in a shocking turn of events, he picks up damage seemingly out of nowhere and finishes 4th, handing the win to Yuki Tsunoda, despite getting fastest lap. Imola to Singapore - After Miami, Piastri vows never to let such a thing happen again, and proceeds to win the next twelve races, with a sprint thrown in for flavour, all from pole except for Spain, which he loses to Alpine's Pierre Gasly. Austin - Haas finds some unexpected pace in the US Grand Prix, with Kevin Magnussen starting from pole in the sprint, and to everyone's surprise, he keeps the lead, finishing 12 whole seconds ahead of Oscar Piastri. The race isnt so kind however, as Piastri wins from pole yet again while Kmag can only manage P4. Mexico City - At Mexico, Magnussen realizes that he rather likes winning, and takes pole from Piastri yet again. The race comes down to the very last lap, but Magnussen keeps his lead, finishing 1.3 seconds ahead of the championship leader. Brazil - In a shocking twist of fate, last week's winner receives a race ban, and has to be replaced yet again by Ollie Bearman for his 3rd F1 race. The sprint goes well for Piastri, who wins pole to flag, but the race is not as easy. A wet quali session lands Yuki Tsunoda on pole, though the race is won by Esteban Ocon. Piastri does steal fastest lap however. Bearman can only manage 6th, and for the first time in his career, finishes a grand prix off the podium and without the fastest lap. Vegas - Pierre Gasly finds monstrous form in quali and takes pole, though an engine failure causes him to retire early into the race. Piastri cruises home to a 19th race win Which brings us to Qatar. Piastri has won the championship long ago at this point, but the fight for P2 is still very much on. Despite having zero race wins, zero poles, and zero fastest laps, P2 is currently held by Lance Stroll, on 263 points. But there's 4 other drivers gunning for his spot, with Ocon at 260, Tsunoda at 256, Gasly at 247, and Magnussen at 246. Separated by a margin of just 17 points, all of these drivers are still very much on for the silver Some other interesting facts - Logan Sargeant finishes last in 8 of his 15 classified races, but does still outscore his replacement Franco Colapinto by 1 point, owing to his 2 fastest lap point to Franco's zero - In his 9 career races, Colapinto finishes 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th two times each, with no fastest laps and 1 DNF. If he'd raced the whole season with the same performance, he'd easily be out in 2nd - Liam Lawson scores the least at 45, finishing 1 point behind Oliver Bearman's 46 - The standings so far are Piastri, Stroll, Ocon, Tsunoda, Gasly, Magnussen, Zhou, Sargeant, Colapinto, Bearman and Lawson

I also was curious and did the math and Oscar would have had the drivers title locked up after Baku (with 7 races and 3 sprints remaining!) and single-handedly give McLaren the constructors over both Alpines after Las Vegas

@gautamvaze1101 Ай бұрын
Update after Qatar - Piastri wins both the sprint and the race, with pole and FL, is up to 603 points, bumping his points percentage up to 93.34%. If he takes the win and FL at Abu Dhabi as well, he'll be at 93.60% - The race for 2nd has changed completely. The gap between 2nd and 6th is just 8 points now, with two separate ties. Gasly jumps 3 places sitting at 272, Stroll and Yuki are tied at 268 a piece, though Yuki takes 3rd because he has a win, Kmag and Ocon are tied at 264, and both of them have 1 win, but Ocon has 1 more second place (idk how sprint wins factor into this) so he's on 5th. - Logan and Franco are now tied on 97 - Liam overtakes Ollie and now sits at 56 points

@@MrVsGarage That would make sense with things that can't be accounted for - like Felipe Massa wouldn't be able to terrorize Max Verstappen at the 2017 Italian Grand Prix if he was banned, but you obviously can't simulate the race if that hadn't happened, so Massa is still on track and competing just as hard as in our timeline.

In this year's alternative universe championship Oscar Piastri looks incredibly dominant with 14 wins out of 15 races and a 150 points lead (362) over second place (Stroll 206), Seargent is the only driver who will not breach the 100-point barrier. As of now (after Zandvoort; Race 15) Piastri needs 4 more wins to completely secure his championship title.

Checking at the end of the season, I’m ignoring the sprint at Austin, but it doesn’t matter,as after the Dutch GP, Oscar wins the following 4 Grand Prix, as well as Vegas and Qatar, and only misses out on a Grand Prix podium once after the Dutch Grand Prix, in Mexico.

The other winners being Tsunoda, Magnussen, Ocon and Gasly, the 2 Alpines were the only 2 who won from the same team claiming a historic 1-2 at Brazil

Oscar has now won 12 out the 13 races this year. If he wins the next 5 races, he will be mathematically uncatchable by his next competitor, Lance Stroll, and crowned world champion in Singapore. If Tsunoda or Stroll dnf the next 3 races, Oscar could be champion by Monza in round 16. Alpine are putting up a decent fight for the constructors, what with having two drivers, but still can't keep up with Piastri's consistency single-handedly carrying Mclaren in the constructors. And yes, I keyed it all in manually, not a great 3am activity. As of the Hungarian Grand prix, the standings are: 1 - Oscar Piastri - McLaren - 313 2 - Lance Stroll - Aston Martin - 170 3 - Yuki Tsunoda - Racing Bulls - 164 4 - Esteban Ocon - Alpine - 137 5 - Kevin Magnussen - Haas - 135 6 - Pierre Gasly - Alpine - 123 7 - Zhou Guanyu - Sauber - 103 8 - Logan Sargeant - Williams - 70 9 - Oliver Bearman - Ferrari - 18 I'm 87% sure that's correct, if the website doesn't wipe my progress I might update this as we go.

@rarepears

Because we have this crazy second mid-season break, I've gone through and done this for all the races so far this season. Oscar is winning by a landslide: he's won every race apart from Miami (which was won by Yuki), and is currently on a 12-race winning streak with 473 points. P2 was a battle between Tsunoda and Stroll for a while, but now it looks like Tsunoda has fallen off, letting Ocon come through to challenge Stroll. In Colapinto's three races he has been on the podium every time (P3, P2, P2), and already has 51 points to the 96 Sargeant managed to rack up until Zandvoort. The funniest bit was when Ferrari, having not competed since 2021, and who will again not be competing in 2025, entered Ollie Bearman for 1 race in Jeddah, got P2 and fastest lap, and then bounced. Or when Sargeant didn't start in Australia, because his car was being used by...no one? Also, with Piastri banned for next year, it looks like Toto's dreams will come true and Antonelli will be set for a rookie championship win!
