What people don’t understand about Damon is that Damon didn’t need to change to become a better man because he was fundamentally a good person, Damon is a very empathetic and selfless person at his core but he was lost in a darkness for quite a while that he forgot his own light so he needed someone to remind him that he was good all along so he could find his lost light again, a human side of him that he thought he lost forever. He needed someone compassionate and understanding to help him let his protective shield down and feel comfortable enough to show more of his humanity to outside world without the fear of being hurt again. Elena was the only person that was able to read Damon emotionally from season 1 and see the hurt behind his eyes and smile, when everyone else saw anger, Elena saw hurt and a broken heart. As a scapegoat Damon was told about his flaws and mistakes by his parents 24/7 and was blamed for everything that was not even his fault so as the result Damon became the biggest critic of himself and slowly started to accept the false self that his parents created for him that he’s not worthy of love, he didn’t need more judging and blame, what he needed was compassion and love, something he never had in his entire existence and Elena understood that, she always holds Damon accountable for his mistakes but also at the same time she knew that Damon’s soul has suffered a great deal of traumas that left too many emotional wounds that takes time to heal and she knew lack of love created those wounds and only love can heal them. She also knew that Damon would do absolutely anything for love because he's driven by love and he always learns from his mistakes. Elena was the inspiration Damon needed to grow and become the best version of himself. By the end of season 6, Damon was already a better man thanks to Elena but his friendship with Bonnie was what he needed to find hope even in the most bleak moments when all hope was believed to be lost. I absolutely adored their friendship but his relationship with Elena was what allowed him in the first place to let his humanity in and start making connections and bonds with other people and finally make a family, his friendship with Bonnie and others is the product of his loving relationship with Elena and no one can deny this.
