With all the madcap, screwball characters Tex Avery created, it's amazing that one of his most famous is so sardonic and melancholic. But then, it was what made him stand out so much. And, you know what? I'm happy you did this little dog justice.

Also the Southern Wolf. Although not nearly as famous as Droopy or the original MGM Big Bad Wolf, he is considered one of his funniest creations. And he is incredibly subdued even when angry or in pain.

_"Hello all you Happy People"._ After "84 years" (2 years at most) you finally got to do a cartoon evolution of him. Despite his sad drowsy expression, Droopy is hands down one of those classic Tex Avery characters that always makes you smile and laugh your butt off especially when he’s paired off with his enemies such as the Wolf from Red Hot Riding Hood and Spike the Bulldog (not the Tom & Jerry Spike, but a different one), along with him becoming a recurring/cameo character for the Tom & Jerry series Even Bill Thompson and the later voice actors who voiced Droopy do a great job voicing his deadpan and droopy voice.

When I first auditioned to become a student of Daws Butler (the voice of Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Aesop Jr., Quisp the alien spokesman for the Quaker Oars Cereal of the same name, Cap’n Crunch and literally dozens of others), he thought it would be a good idea for each of us to talk about why we were interested in being Voice Actors. He went first, and talked about how this guy named Tex Avery gave him his first big break in cartoons. When he mentioned Tex’s name, I lit up and said, “Tex Avery? He’s my hero! He did more with speed and time than any other Director of cartoons!”. Which, of course, he did. I then shut up and let Daws say what he wanted to say. It was then my turn, and I told him about myself, and demonstrated a few of my own voices. When I was finished and Daws knew about me, Daws said, “Well, you’re advanced enough to not need my Voice Acting Workshop, so how would you like to come in once a week and we can read together and take it from there? Can you come back next Tuesday? And try not to be so tall when you do!” And I suddenly found myself being educated by a man who I’d heard all my life, who owed his career to Tex. Sadly, Daws passed away some years go, and I really miss him. But everything he taught me is now mine, and it comes with me wherever I go. If you decide to be a Voice Actor, here are two pieces of advice: when you’re looking at a script and getting ready to record it, PAY ATTENTION to the “music of the words”. Think about that until you understand what it means. Daws taught me that. Secondly, find something else to do for a living. There are SO many people trying to get into that field, almost no one makes it anymore. I’m not trying to tell you what to do…. I’m just trying to save you a LOT of heartache.

Droopy surely deserves a good comeback. I've always enjoyed his classic shorts, and his cameos in "Roger Rabbit" and "Tom and Jerry" content are fun to watch. Whatever they got planned for that upcoming short, I just hope it turns out well. That, and it doesn't get the ax. Better yet, we need a Droopy cartoon where he gets back at Zaslov for the animation purge.

Droopy & Dripple in The Tom & Jerry Show shows the best animated Droopy style of all. Droopy may have a sad look to him, but he does show a smile more often. He's cute for a cartoon dog. Tom and Jerry's chase scenes will always get more laughs from me, yet we can never overlook the charm and handsomeness that Droopy's character adds to the line-up. While Droopy, Dripple, Spike, Tyke and all their canine companions entertain us from morning till night, I'll always be a cat lover. So to cut a long story short, while I do like Droopy, Spike and other canine characters, Tom and Jerry come out on top. I prefer a cat and mouse chase between Tom and Jerry.

I wish I could be so optimistic about a possible return to glory for Droopy. As splendid as the original Avery Droopys are, part of the joke is that Droopy is a one-joke character. Somehow, Avery is able to use this limitation to make the cartoons *funnier*. But whenever others try it, they accidentally spotlight the limitations without making them somehow funny. That the passive pooch is so often limited to concise cameos indicates some animator awareness of the conundrum. To paraphrase Oscar Hammerstein, how do you solve a problem like Droopy?

My favorite Droopy short is the "Dixieland Droopy" cause it's one that I remember watching the most. I like all the others just as equally as "Dixieland Droopy." As always I enjoy these Cartoon Evolution videos. They give LOTS of info that sometimes I find that I didn't know about. I was totally thinking the same thing and I agree with you. These characters including Droopy are often overlooked and haven't come off the shelf from the Warner Brothers library of classic cartoons. They truly deserve to be revived. And they should also revitalize the Tom and Jerry cartoons based on their mid-1940s shorts. It would give everyone that feel of the glory days of old-timey theatrical cartoons. In fact, I was thinking of being the new voice of Droopy for these new cartoons since I want to be a voice actor when I'm older.
