Oh boy, love Lance to pieces, but the man's been absolutely BRUTAL to me compared to every other Elite Four member AND every other Champion! I've faced off against him across both Pokemon Stadiums, Fire Red, and Heart Gold. In the two handhelds in particular, it's like the Dragon Master was going out of his way to make sure I acknowledged him as the strongest opponent I would ever face, because both Blue and Red afterwards seemed downright merciful in comparison. The most intense battle I've ever had with him was in Heart Gold's post game. My Charizard, Dratini, Misdreavus, Altaria, Gardevoir, and Lucario versus his Salamence, Gyarados, Garchomp, Altaria, Charizard, and Dragonite. I finally beat him on round three or four. The previous rounds...I would say I was defeated, but the word "defeated" would not be a nearly strong enough word to truly describe what happened to me. Let's just say he saw what Cynthia was doing to so many other people and decided he'd take a page out of her book while dealing with me. You know what, though? I'll happily admit he's the strongest opponent I've ever faced, so he gets a victory from this fan girl. I hope my Dratini and I get to face him again in the future, even knowing he'll curb-stomp us with style at least once.

Lance may have lost the Champion title in the Kanto games, but I'm happy he takes it back in the Johto games. Not only Red and Blue left Indigo Plateau two years prior, but he also defeats Silver in the Johto Team Rocket Base. While Lance may look like a joke in the first round as champion, his rematch team was the real deal. Lance is an iconic Champion because he is the only Elite Four member to become Pokemon League Champion. It's amazing how Bruno is the only Kanto Elite Four member to remain an Elite Four member. Despite the Indigo Plateau change in the Johto games, Bruno and Lance stay as they are and go up one level. In the Johto League, while Will, Koga, and Karen are brand new challengers, the only one to not replace any of the Kanto Elite Four members is Koga.

Lance and Red share the same battle them because they are Indigo League champions. The Johto Champion theme is a remix of the original Pokemon Indigo Plateau theme and Intro from Pokemon Green, Red, and Blue.

I used Articuno a lot for this battle when I was younger but I began to adopt a different strategy as I aged,as Vaporeon and Blastoise with Ice Beam(pretty much a water-type with Ice Beam) and Persian who is a critical hits master in Gen I does well in those games. in Gen II, Electric Types can get themselves a piece of the action as well, Raichu, Electabuzz, Jolteon or Chinchou or others that have been taught Thunderbolt or Thunder, Gengar even does well here and Alakazam and Psychics are just all around good. Hyper Beam was always a killer and you always have to have Potions to combat it, I've never had any of Lance's Pokémon not use it and in Yellow, they have Thunder, Fire Blast to combat all that. Other birds like Fearow and Pidgeot, Fire Types like Charizard and Arcanine need to sit this one out and be the reserves to get a move like Body Slam or Slash in to help out but usually I never needed them here. Overall, if you are not prepared Lance can give you issues but just use good all around Pokémon and heal if necessary and Lance isn't too bad. The issue is just getting through all his Dragonites/Dragonairs.

It’s crazy how different lance is in canon. In the manga lance is like a giant villain, destroying like a whole city. The whole elite 4 beside team rocket are essentially antagonists. But in canon he’s essentially the Pokémon universes equivalent to Superman. Of course he did destroy a team rocket grunt, but it was in the name of Justice! Overall. Lance is the goat.
