Nintendo has temporarily changed designs many times before, there is no telling if it will be permanent or not. Note that the designs for many other characters has slightly changed as well so I'm going to guess the design changes are specifically for Mario Kart 9.

In Tropical Freeze (WiiU), DK plays Donkey Kong Country Returns (3ds) if you have Diddy Kong with you, plays Mario Kart 7 if you have Dixie with you, and replays DK Country Returns with Cranky, but he's shopping at Cranky's in-game shop. The Tropical Freeze (Switch) ones are my favorite. Especially the co-op Switch ones. Diddy Kong is the cheater, Dixie Kong is the "hold my banana smoothie" player, and Cranky Kong is still the cranky old man. Who wants a new Mario Odyssey style game for Donkey Kong on the Switch 2?
