After the Roman empire fall, the people of London immediately lived in tents, and it took London 900 years to build back to Roman standards, wow.
@chrisstucker18138 ай бұрын
It wouldn't say it was immediate. Roman Britain fell into steep decline after Magnus Maximus declared himself Emperor in Britain in 383AD and left the island with most of the Roman legions to help him take the throne. Barbarian invasions ramped up due to less military presence; the increased invasions impacted things like trade and the economy. As a result, the Roman infrastructure quickly fell into disrepair because of societal and economical instability. The Crossing of the Rhine in 406 was the nail in coffin for Britannia since most Gaul was overran by the Germanic tribes leaving the island completely cut off from Imperial Command. Communications and trade with Rome broke down and soldiers went into revolt as they weren't receiving pay. The soldiers then crowned a few successive emperors and overthrew whichever ones they deemed weren't up to the task. They settled on Constantine III who took whatever military strength was left and abandoned Britain to save Gaul and take the throne. From this point, Britannia was pretty much left on its own to defend itself and the Romans officially withdrew from the island a few years later in 410. The remaining garrisons probably barricaded themselves in and thousands of people would've been fleeing for their lives into the last remaining save-havens like London because of the Saxon and Pict invasions causing absolute carnage everywhere. Apparrently, some rich families actually stayed behind and tried to maintain the Roman way of life, but being cut off from Rome for so long made it more and more difficult. By 500AD, London was effectively a ghost town.throne

Great video and animation quality. Really well done. Just a few nitpicks as a Londoner - "Book Store" wouldn't have used the word store then for that. "Liquor" shop or what we call an "Off-License" didn't start until 1860 so wouldn't have been there in 1841. Although Ealing Broadway is a part of the London Underground network, no part of it is underground. Ealing Broadway, the most random station to use, yet can't use the proper "Oxford Circus" name plate at the appropriate part? LMAO. Lots of great references though! Love the Beatles and Harry Potter bits. And as someone who used to operate the London Eye, glad you included that too! Again, great video and just nitpicking. The amount of work that went in to this is commendable, well done!
@gswcooper71623 ай бұрын
Let's not even get into the geography of where we're walking... Buckingham Palace is right beside the river (it's nearly a mile away), and then continuing on the same road brings us to Ealing Broadway Tube station, with Big Ben dead ahead and then we end up at (Oxford) Circus with the Globe Theatre and the London Eye right in front of us and no sight of the Thames that would be in between... xD
