R.O.B’s character is actually very sad. In Pikmin 2, his name is very emotional: Remembered Old Friend. In Smash Bros Brawl, his story is sad as well: His kind dies from bombs, and he watches them. Not wanting them to die out. In Smash Bros Ultimate, his description in the boxing ring is “The last of his kind.” Poor R.O.B...

That's even more sad if you consider his story in real life. He was a important part of Nintendo's past but today that's all he is, past. He wasn't forgotten or anything but the fact that most of his appearences refer to him as "the last of his kind" and Subspace Emissary shows the extinction of the ROBs show that he's basically the last representant of a lost era that will never come back. Thinking like this we can probably say that he's the best character to represent the NES era in Smash
