You know, Shy Guys look surprisingly similar to the cyclops enemies in Devil World. Considering Yoshi's design was partially inspired by Tamagon from the same game, I wouldn't be surprised if that was an inspiration for the Shy Guys as well.

I think looking back on it Mario Bros 2 was a good thing. It really increased the variety in Mario and I think if the sequel to Mario bros had been the Japanese one which was almost the same game but harder it wouldn't have been as successful. It also vastly increased the amount of enemies and abilities in the games. If it hadn't happened Mario might have stuck much closer to it's roots and might have just been a one hit wonder.

They also appeared in Super Mario RPG before the Paper Mario series. There were Shysters, Shyguys on pogo sticks, led by Mack, who briefly took over Mushroom Kingdom. Regular Shyguys appeared as normal enemies in Rose Way, and Shyguy grim reapers called Greapers appeared in the Sunken Ship. Then Shy Away, who served Valentina and even had several lines of dialogue.

Don't forget about the Shy Guy Ghosts from Luigi's Mansion. They're a ghost variation of the Shy Guy. They take two suction attacks from the Poltergust 3000 to defeat. First, Luigi has to suck their masks off, then he can suck them up
