Yeah, imagine if that happened. It features three control sticks, a D-pad, a memory card slot, and four face buttons: an X button (not the cross button), a Triangle button, and two Purple buttons. Two sticks on the side, and three prongs for the central joystick. Also incorporates shoulder buttons: a white L trigger, as well as another R trigger on the right, which is also white.

Good rundown. I was just thinking about this in context of PC controls and how those shifted from right-hand movement to left-hand movement because of the way the originally office minded equipment was designed, for consoles, the left-hand movement was always the staple (save for the Atari era, I guess) because of Nintendo's design. Cool to learn that Sega bascially had the first modern controller with the second Saturn one, even if it looks so goofy, like a console had a baby with a discman. God... remember discmans? :D

I really love the way the Steam Controller is put together and size of the ABXY button sizes. I think it's great for games that require two joysticks. Also the touch pad joysticks do return to center when no longer touched, there's even an option for the virtual joystick to snap to wherever you click on the touch pad so you don't have to "start from center" like is needed on a physical joystick. Ergonomically, it is my favorite, however, I can’t help but wish it had gyroscopic aiming capabilities like the Switch pro controller does. Conversely, I wish the Switch pro controller had the analog triggers that the Xbox controller had, so they both have a feature that puts them above, and also one that holds them back from being the best. Both are better than the DS4 controller, which isn’t bad, I’m just more a fan of off center analog sticks, also it’s battery life sucks!

Considering the Switch pro controller has a 40 hour battery life and I’ve never so much as seen the low battery warning when using it, I’d say Sony needs to work on getting a bigger battery in the DS4! I only play video games as a hobby, so about 2-3 hours every couple of days is all my schedule allows for game time. Because I am so busy, I often forget to plug in my DS4 controller, and that’s why I complain about the battery life.

Loved this vid. Glad to see the intellivision mentioned. I tell people about that as one I had played growing up and theres not a ton of people that remember it. What was cool (or I thought as a kid and do slightly now) is that the games had a plastic slip that would slip over the number pad to tell you what buttons to push. I heard ya mention memorizing button presses in there later and figured maybe some people didnt know that. Like if you wanted to play pitfall, ya slipped in a plastic slide over the keys and boom. Then its football, ya grab that slip and play. I havent thought to ask at my local old gaming store but I'm sure these plastic slips are mostly gone over the years. They tended to get holes eventually pretty easy after over play so I'm sure 30+ years itd be hard to find solid ones for the games lol great vid though, always like seeing these histories of gaming

Good work man, but you missed on some of the special aspects of some controllers, like the Atari 5200 controller being the controller having the first pause button, the turbo grafx and 3do controllers daisy chain concept for multiplayer, the neo geo controllers being a 1to1 arcade replication and use of multi switch controllers making responses so much better. Also n64s having the first notion of rumble, with the DualShock being the first built into a controller as standard, except for the sixaxis. Also the various vr controller setups, and I’m not sure if you were aware of Microsoft’s newer adaptive controller setup that was introduced in 2018, which allows a whole variety of interesting setups for someone who might not be able to use a controller normally or might want a different experience utilising it which would have been a nice send off for the video showing that although iterative, there are still innovations still coming. It’s good stuff man, keep it up :)

I think the next Xbox controller should add back paddle, just like the ones that the elite controller has (however make it non-detachable).

The steam controller seems criminally underrated cause most reviewers didnt use the customisation options that where supposed to be used.

The Intellision was awesome! I had one as a kid and loved it. The controller served its purpose well and allowed for a great amount of input options.

Mysterious Stranger The only thing holding it back from being the best is it’s lack of analog triggers, which most games don’t even use, so it mostly gets a pass.
@JordonAM5 жыл бұрын
Digital triggers are really good for FPS games though. There's less travel (At least for Switch and Wii U). It's not good for driving games like Forza however of course (Hence why mario Kart uses the A button to accelerate)

Great video guys! A Lot of research went into this, I can tell. It's kinda sad that you didn't mention the headphone jack on the PS4 controller. I personally use it all the time and think it's a really great addition to the overall experience. Also you forgot me, THE KINECT. CAUSE I AM THE CONTROLLER

Comfy - but it's lacking a few crucial things - especially for a "Pro" controller. Need analogue triggers, and a central Dpad pivot.

The Steam Controller is the best controller for PC gaming IMO, the thing is, is a totally different design and use from a regular dual stick that as the video says hasn't change since the ps1 era, so you either adapt and learn how to use it and love it or you get frustrated on the learning experience and hate it.
