I think Final Fantasy has finally found a combat system that is modern and works allowing players who like Kingdom Hearts style combat to have that and people who like turn based combat with the Wait Mode. Very impressed to see both those modes from FFXV making it into FFVII Remake.

You have a weird transition between final fantasy x and xi, and you didn't even talk about the combat of final fantasy xii. That bums me out because I love that game.

Also I disagree with ffx's combat being a step back. The CTB is the best turn based system imo. It gives you a list of who's going when in the combat so you can plan ahead, if you need to use a healing item or something you won't be surprised when the person you're healing gets killed. It gives each party member a more defined role (walks is good against flyers, auron is good against armored enemies, etc) but doesn't punish you for not having the right party members in your team because you can swap them mid fight. I love that summons are treated as their own separate party. It makes them feel so much cooler than just a screen nuke. I know it's my opinion, but I don't like the CTB, it feels like I'm being rushed and that the enemy is getting free hits sometimes. I prefer the CTB because it moves at my pace, but most importantly because it gives you a turn list. That's the part I appreciate most. I hate the original from battle system, where you give everyone a command at the beginning of the turn, and then they go in order based on their speed or something, because I've had no many characters die because an enemy went before the healer or something. But that's just me.

Falcon, Final Fantasy XIII is actually one of the stronger entries of the series. Hell, it's the 4th best PS3 game in Japan, Lightning is the Japanese fan favorite female. That linear design was what helped Japan get into it because it reminded them of their fan favorite game, FF10.

I absolutely love how much of a fan Falcon is when it comes to Final Fantasy. It's easily my most beloved games. I grew up with them, and I resonate well when I encounter someone who also enjoyed them during their earlier years. And thank you for not getting into the FFVI/FFVII debate. I loved the way you could customize your characters to a ridiculous degree depending on how and where you equipped all your magic to. Man I didnt know about powering up GFs attacks with the select button until my 4th or 5th playthrough many years later!

This video is not only one of my favorite videos on this channel but one of my favorite videos on KZbin period. Final Fantasy is a series dear to my heart and this video broke down the series in a way that I truly appreciate and commend you for. My favorite Final Fantasy game is Final Fantasy VII. It is hands down the best game of the series imo and ive replayed it countless times and cannot wait for the remake. Final Fantasy is such a great series. I absolutely love that for each of the games, they have new main characters, new world, new way to level up, pretty much everything. The only ones I can think of that were similar was the 13 series. But even then, bout everything was different, except that the story line continued. FF6 and the 13 series are my favorites. Though I didn't like 13 at first because the battle system wasn't what I was used to (the traditional turn based system). But after I gave an honest effort to understand it and how to use it, ended up really enjoying it and the game. Also, Lightning forever, lol.

I also missed out on XII, as I was way too into Diablo 2 LoD/WarCraft 3 and it's expansion, and WoW so I missed out on a lot of the later released PS2 JRPGs :( But it was because I was young and was only able to get a few new PS2 games a year, while $15/mo was easy for me to do even as a middle/high schooler for WoW subscription. And that game was like virtual heroin, so it was all I needed. Hell, I even quit WarCraft 3 and Diablo 2 so I could be in a high end raiding guild, lol. Was fun, but so sad on how much I missed out on.

4,6,7,9,10 are my 5 favorite in no particular order. Despite playing 2(4)/3(6) on SNES before I got my PS1, I will say VII is my favorite. That game made me dive into a rabbit hole of JRPGs I wouldn't have otherwise. As I only had 4/6 on SNES because I liked games with swords and magic. Had no idea what a JRPG was until VII, and how much I loved the genre(I was 8 when VII came out, so yeah I was a dumb kid :P) But 4 and 9 will always have a special place in my heart as well as the setting for both of them are just so damn awesome. Love the high fantasy settings. Both of them had a kind of forced job system to, with each character coming into the party as a specific job. 9 is a great game that I haven't played in far too long and need to really rectify that. Matter of fact, think I'm gonna start a playthrough of it once I finish Breath of Fire 3/4 as until I got 3 on my VITA not long ago, and have had 4 digitally for a while, but getting 3 is giving me a reason to play them, and I haven't played either of them since I had them on PS1 way back in the day. So definitely want to finish them before starting up another classic PS1 JRPG

It's not, but it was a simple way of trying to explain the "draw" mechanic and junctioning magic to people that may not be familiar with the game. It's a "card game" in terms of having to collect and assign your magic "cards" to characters attributes, and as you use or spend your "cards" the effects are diminished, and you need to find or collect more. It's not a great way of explaining it but I can see why he did it that way.

Yes u did have to draw it from monster or draw point in one way, but because it's quantity based that i think about "Item" analogue. Kinda sad you didn't elaborate more on FF9. It's so much more than what meets the eye when you know what went into it. It's one of the last farewells to its kind, the last FF where the series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi had heavy involvement, an entry which he himself called the quintessential Final Fantasy experience, the FF that series music composer Nobuo Uematsu claimed the OST of was his best work, the most critically acclaimed entry in the series having the highest meta score, and the game itself being comprised of references and nods to every FF before it. It really was the FF to end all FF's if you're a fan of the series in its original form.

I know im going to get hate for this. Buit XIII and XIII-2 are one of my favorite FF in thew franchise. I really connected with the story and characters. Also I totally count Type 0 as a main FF entry. It had one of the best FF stories in the franchise, plus the ending actually made me cry. But out of the "classic" FF's, VIII is my fav with 10 and VII tied for second. Crisis Core is also my favorite spin off. Oh and I absolutely LOVED XV! NoctisXLuna Forever!

I haven't really enjoyed a Final Fantasy story since X TBH. I've played 6 onwards and I'm thinking of playing 3 at some point since I have it on steam, I have Bravely Default on 3DS which is similar to classic Final Fantasy games and it's fantastic so far (I'm up to chapter 2 I think).

After watching this, I really want to play IV, VI, VII, IX, X, XII, Lightning Returns and XV. These games caught my interest in the series, but for ones that I've played, FFI is my favorite. Yeah, that's weird to see.

William Garrett XV is great man. if you're a fan of the series and have disposable income, go buy it. it's sold around 6 million and square Enix said they won't consider it a success unless it sells 10 million and if it fails, there might not be another FF

Final Fantasy XV was surprisingly good despite having lengthy development (10 years, almost the same as Duke Nukem), which is pretty commendable since any game being put in development hell has high chance of flop.

my absolute favorite, no hesitation, is final Fantasy 12! It had such a beautiful "digital art" watercolor aesthetic that I hadn't really seen before in another game, and I really enjoyed how open world it was! the settings and character design were gorgeous, the battles were fun (even if you kinda didn't have to do much button pressing)

Final Fantasy VI was my first official FF game, due to the fact that it was the first that i ever beaten. It is not only my favorite FF game, but it sparked my interest in the series. So it will always have a special place in my heart.

I love Final Fantasy. Each one has given me a reason to love it. Even the bad ones. There is always some redeeming quality to the worst of Final Fantasy. I cant wait for the VII remake and I'm ready to dive back into XV with the DLCs. It amazing to me that the first Final Fantasy was a 1 off deal with the daunting task of saving a company and went on spawned a 3 decade long legacy. Also, Falcon you gotta fix the video man. I'll totally watch it again when you fix the gap between X and XI and I really hope there is a chunk missing from XII cause I think it deserved more than 6 seconds or air time >_>

I remember when I first played FF7 Sephiroth was the biggest bad ass of all time in any video game and probably even to this day I've yet to see any villain who's as bad ass as Sephiroth, though Magus comes a close 2nd and one of the greatest bad ass of all time too from chrono trigger. FF6 was my fav ff of all time probably because it did everything right.

Very interesting and nicely explained! I would like to point out that limit bursts were actually introduced in FF6 first (not 7), although they were less prominent and not customizable. It just turned regular attacks into crazy-powerful attacks.

Oh man, i love XIII. I hated the open world part, felt useless. Big empty field with "quests" of type: "go there and kill this". ALL OF THEM. it absolutely broke the immersion. I came back to it few months later and finished it. What is wrong with corridors people ??? go out in real world if you want "open world". I wanted a good story, good characters, good visuals. I got all that, i couldn´t care less about "open world" and boringly travell and do fetch quests... bleh

One JRPG franchise that I recently fell in love with was the Tales series. They had not only good characters and plot, but also awesome action-packed gameplay, with pretty anime-style graphics. Most of the characters are well-written, and the stories have more moral ambiguity. Something that Final Fantasy should take inspiration from. I thought Caius felt more like a Tales villain than a Final Fantasy villain.

I seriously don't get how people find FF 8 confusing. I've been playing it since I was eight, and even then it made perfect sense to me. It's actually lots of fun trying all the different junction combinations and refining the characters' skills to the max. The story isn't more bizarre and "fantastic" than any other FF game, so what are they talking about?

My favorite would probably be IX, although Tactics Advance also holds a very special place in my heart for being my first ever exposure to the series. I loved the idea of a magic book that turned the real world into a fantasy world. This time, you weren't being sucked into a fantasy world, YOUR world became the fantasy world. I'd kinda wish they tried that concept again with FFXVI.

No love for FFtactics? They remade it on the psp as "War of the Lions". The remake then dovetailed into the FFtacticsAdvance series for the gameboy advance, that would further connect the world of Ivalice in all its presentations/permutations from the original tactics game/vagrant story back in 1997 to FFXII on the PS2. The FFT story is one of the most cleverly presented narratives in all of Final Fantasy imo. It was like I was playing Game of Thrones. I think they both came out that year as well. Great video btw! I want more of this retrospective analysis of the Final Fantasy series. Also possible analytical video essays on the FFT-WOTL psp remake. I think that game is my favorite videogame of all time. Final fantasy 7 I haven't played them all but I have played most. I like how in depth you get with most of the characters in the game. I especially like Red the experiment you meet fairly early in the game. I can not wait for the remake part 1 to come out!

My Top 10 FF games: 10. XIII-3 9. XIII 8. XIII-2 7. Type-0 6. VIII 5. XII 4. X 3. IX 2. Crisis Core 1. VII Honorable mentions: VI, IV, X-2 and Dirge of Cerberus. I actually never played VI. I did play IV on PSP and thought it was boring (the world especially). Maybe someday I'll play VI. I've also yet to play XV and World of FF. I'm waiting for XV to become "complete".

I take it you never played 6 to have it not even on the top ten, let alone #1. 13, 13-2, 13-3 do NOT belong on any top FF list of ANYONE! 9 is extremely high for a very crappy story and really mediocre gameplay mechanics for the series. I will praise you on one thing, you did not put X-2 on this list. THANK YOU, cuz that girl power crapfest was extremely annoying and hard to stomach. +YogurtRetzel Aye, and I just shared mine. Though, I will say I extremely disagree with yours about 9's story. I dare say you have not played many of the Final Fantasy games, or at least payed any attention to the stories (if you had) to be able to have such an opinion. And "A LOT" of fans is far from the truth. 9's story has been down towards the bottom of the barrel, along with 8, for MOST fans. Just as most people who deem 7 being the best story and best game in the series had only started playing Final Fantasy with number 7 and have no real knowledge to make such a claim. But back to 9. You are free to like it all you want, but you cannot rightfully say it is one of the best without knowledge of all of the stories in the entire series. This may seem like an opinion, but it's kind of not, the quality of the story of 8 and 9 were garbage compared to the rest. Even 7's story was actually closer to the middle of the list, when rating the quality of the story of ALL in the main series. I know you want to call that an opinion, but really, play ALL of the games and READ ALL of the stories.

I could say a lot about this but I want to keep it short. Basically, 13-3 should NEVER be at the top of anyone's FF list due to the story alone. It nullified the stories of 13 and 13-2 essentially saying, at the end of Lightning Returns, that the first two games no longer mattered. It was absolutely ridiculous and such a cop-out of an ending. Why was it a huge cop out? Because they spent SO MUCH TIME in 13-2 and LR making the story more and more convoluted that they COULDN'T end it any other way. It was absolute rubbish. The game itself was great, I had a lot of fun and even got the platinum trophy (also in 13) on PSN - so you know I played the shit out of it. And I think 13, 13-2, and 13-3 are all underrated games and will defend them all. But to put those 3 right at the top of the list is a total joke. It's a barking cat. I mean shit, 8's story was convoluted and silly, but nothing like 13-3 and how it completely dumped all over 13 and 13-2. Revisit 4, 6, 7, and 10 if you want better stories AND characters. Okay shit so I just wrote this and then realized they were ranked 10, 9, and 8 so I apologize. Oh well.
